I got a letter from Sky this morning telling me about their broadband service which looks pretty good to me.

I currently pay £24.99 a month for 4mb with NTL, so even if I go onto their top service, which is unlimited 16Mb (up to...) I will only pay £10 a month.

Of course this is on top of the £43 i pay for Sky a month, but then I pay that anyway.

yeah considering that we were being promised 100MB speed we only get as much as 16...

Also Sky bought AOL UK, but i definetly see them as they way forward - incidentally did you know that the average home in Korea has a BB speed of 300MB!!!!!!

i have broadband through telewest at £17.99 per month unlimited downlaods and unlimited time on the internet dont know what the speed is though!!!

I pay 29.99 for AOL Platinium but have been with them for a long time may consider SKY in the near future once the price war is over

I'm with the UK's consistently best DSL supplier - Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.net.uk). Bit pricey (£35 a month - which includes extra script-enabled server space) - but you get what you pay for?! :)

im not all clued up on internet etc, but lets say i bought a laptop and i take it with me all over the place would i be able to get internet wherever i go? or have they not invented that yet i know if i plug it in on say a gner train i can use it but what about say in the middle of a field or in an empty warehouse????

If the laptop is Wi-Fi connected, i believe that you can use it wherever there is a 'hotspot' - a wireless broadband connected area.

The other thing to bear in mind with the speeds offered by Broadband companies, is that you will only get the top speed that your local exchange can provide (for BT based lines). In most areas this is still only 2mb and even less in rural areas or if you are miles away from the exchange.

The other thing to look at is tying it into your phonecalls - that way, because you are taking two services from one company they subsidise the services for you.

Contention Ration is the maximum number of people sharing the same connection. So if you have a 2mb connection and a contention ration of 50:1 (which is standard domestic BB contention ratio) ..... you can do the maths.

Website - Hmmmmm, don't you love modern technology. Yes - Utility Warehouse is Telecom plus, for whom i am a distributor .... helps to pay the mortgage (especially when other work is slow!!). I'l get back when i know it's back up and working!!

On a seperate note, i would try and persuade any NTL customers to switch to anyone (except BT!!) as there is a minimum call charge of 6p - literally for picking up the phone! Most NTL customers don't realise that they can keep the television service and move the phone to a (far) more cost effective provider ..... such as Utility Warehouse (you knew it was coming!!), Talk Talk, Tesco, Sainsbury's - virtually every man and their dog are doing it now!

'Short Back and Sides Sir, and would you like Free Evening and Weekend Calls with that?'

'Did you enjoy the meal? Would you like to save money on your telephone for a dessert?'

Sheeez.

Seriously though, ANYONE (apart from NTL) is cheaper than BT and some of those will also be able to offer you discounts on the line rental as well.

Wi Fi stands for Wireless Somethingoranother!! Either you laptop will come Wi Fi enabled, or you can buy a card that slots into the side of it. It basically means that your laptop is able to pick up the Broadband signals in these Hot Spots.

A lot of Hotels and Shopping Centres have Hot Spots, i have even seen a McDonalds with one as well!!

If your looking for something as above try connecting to a mobile internet provider like Orange whom now do a very decent deal for £30 per month with free internet capabilities as well and orange have the best coverage all over uk so sitting in a field whilst on your laptop is quiet feasible

Not strictly sound advice about Orange's coverage being given there.

seen this report before some time ago will say that all networks have there good and bad areas, but until last year according to which magazine, orange had the best reason being they had both 3g and normal masts to cover all eventualities whilst the rest are still catching up. and as well as that there is now a rising opposition by general public to companies putting up masts here there and everywhere something to do with the microwave effect to kids etc etc

You can use you phone as a modem with any mobile phone network provider. You will generally only get a maximum of 115k downstream though, I dread to think what the upstream is :(
