Velcro Straps

I have looked thru the search and altho there are plenty of topics there - the one I want I cannot find.

Im sure someone on here was selling velcro straps by the 100 and i brought some think in 2008 or 2009. I am now in need for more. I have looked on fleabay and theres no one there selling in those sort of quantities.

Can anyone remember who it was ?

Taff might need a hand for a day soon - would like to get the stage lighting rig up in garden to test and someone elses ideas/thoughts would be welcome :)

I was just about to post on this subject and would like to ask a question about the uses of velcro.

I am looking at using it for holding my suspended backdrop which hangs from a timber batten strapped to a standard Lighting T bar.

The width of the backdrop is 12 feet and its 8 feet high--as many will know its an American Flag and overall weighs 3.5 lbs roughly 6 kilos.

I am wondering if velcro would be strong enough to hold a backdrop of this size and weight;)

Any advice greatly appreciated--currently I staple it to the wooden batten which works fine but is a bit of a pain derigging at midnight:eek:

Try reusable cable ties, they work a treat for me, they're cheap so not a problem if you lose a few per gig, they're also black so near invisible in use. This guy sells them @ £5 per 100 ebay shop (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/gibbiecub) (he's on holiday at the moment) I'm assuming your starcloth has 'eyes' for hanging, if not, they're easy enough to fo fit some

Yes those are the things, but the link supplied charges almost double the price :eek: for the 300mm ones when you have added the VAT

Thanks for the ideas---I havent got eyelets all along the top of the backdrop as if did this I would have to hang the backdrop ( which is a multiple coloured flag ) from the batten which would then involve screw heads or cable ties--this is not what I had in mind.

I was thinking of a strip of velcro attached to the top length of the flag and a corresponding strip attached to the rear of the wooden batten so its hidden from view--then simply marry up the two velcro surfaces--its the weight of the flag pulling against the velcro that I wondered about.

Does the sticky back side of velcro stick in the long term to these surfaces

a. wooden battens

b. flag made of a kind of polyester material ( not canvas)

Thats the key question and is it likely to take the weight 2.5 pounds spread over 12 feet ?

I can always buy 12 feet and find out but anyone with working knowledge of velcro hopefully can guide me-

Pe7e - yes mate velcro will do the job, but you will need the heavy duty velcro

for the baton i would also screw the velcro on as a safety measure, altho the heavy duty Vecro should be ok. I would also wrap the banner around the baton to help spread the weight a bit.

as for te banner the self stick should be enough but if you want to make sure then you can find someone with a sewing machine you can have it stitched on as well

I thought you was hanging a starcloth :) but to answer your velcro question, yes the velcro will certainly hold the weight, get 1" wide tape and sew it on to the flag, and use plenty of staples to attach the other piece to the batton, otherwise you are likly to pull it off when you take the flag off

For the heavy duty stuff I use local sewing shop - also any of teh normal stores mentioned in other posts on this forum should do it IE:- Matalan.

my black cloth is getting very tatty and will be replaced later this year. at the moment i use a mixture of clamps and gaffa tape to hold me cloth onto me goalpost - I am looking to replace them with teh velcro supplied above

Aha--ok guys this is sounding like a plan now--ill take a rain check on sewing the velcro on the flag maybe staple it--I got a local firm to stitch up the cover for my boat recently--

I was the one that got stitched up--:eek:

They made a rather poor job of getting the lines straight :(

My batten is only 3/4 inch 20mm --do they sell velcro in many different widths.:confused:

Please confirm where I could get some---is it better to go online or can you buy standard strips in B and Q etc. im not too fussed about price differences if its only a couple of pounds obviously.

ring the company on the link in my above post and they will be able to confirm what they can do for you. The heavy duty stuff on that auction is 25mm wide but you can cut it down and use elswhere

Another tip: if you don't want to stitch the velcro on to the flag (and the stick-on velcro can be impossible to stitch on - you can't get the needle through!), get yourself some decent fabric glue, and glue the velcro on to the flag.

A good fabric glue will hold it no problem, and can even go through the washing machine / dry cleaning without any issue. :)

I still may consider staples as I have bought a heavy duty stapler.

Washing machine-- im really worried that if the dye runs at all its goodbye Giant Flag--not sure how to test it in advance.

It could do with a wash but at around £80 a throw including postage from America and a months delay I have a bit of a problem--I am thinking of contacting the ebay dealer in America to see if he has any advice.

Dry cleaning an item 12 feet by 8 feet sounds expensive considering what they charge for say a pair of trousers--its certainly an interesting job ironing it:eek:

Yeah, it was me, and I don't have the supplier anymore:( , i get mine on reels now, not as good as the old ones i got, as they don't have the loop through on them.
