Ei up People!!
As most of you are aware, I need to power 4 EV T18 woofers!
I think I've got my hands on a Crown CTI - 6000 ?
Been told this would do the job?

I cant find a Crown CTI 600
http://www.crownaudio.com/gen_htm/express/examp.htm
are you sure its that?
THE WOOFER STATES 400 watt long term (sound a useless statement as its not RMS!)
http://www.electrovoice.com/sitefiles/downloads/T18_Subwoofer_EDS.pdf
So Around 1000 watts per side into 4 ohms RMS (ASSUMING EACH CABS 8 OHMS)
should be ok
Do you have a crossover??
cheers

I found an Xti 6000
Spec sheet suggests ( why can't everyone simply put RMS figures? ) 0ver 2000 watts a side at 4ohms. More than enough for your needs. As I'm not familiar with Crown's rating system, and EV's likes or dislikes for excessive power inputs, I can't say whether it's too big or not. Sorry. My own feeling is that an Xti 4000 would have been a better size, but as I said I'm in the dark a bit here.

Yeah I no it's alot more powerful so I have a limiter and also crossover!
I won't crank it to much, bins may catch fire lol!

Great Amp if you recall i suggested the XTi 4000 and it solves your x over problem, are you sure its a XTI model .

at 2100 watts per side into 4 ohms surely youll toast your bass bins???
the speakers have a handling of 800 watts?

Dave he will not need a crossover the xti range have fully built in DSP you can hook up to laptop and configure to suit your set up .

Hiya Tony
Yeah i looked at the specs
Im a Switching Amp fan and notice the XTI range are all Switchmode too so theyre nice and light
I still think theyll kill his bass bins though
they seem a bit like overkill
does the Amplifier feeding the tops have a crossover in or are they still being fed with a full range signal?
cheers

To be honest tops and mids never came up in the post ,i just pointed him towards the XTI 4000 as the right amp to drive the 4 subs, yes the 6000 is overkill but perhaps he got a good price as he said he could not afford the 4000,just a question as you have looked up the specs can all 4 subs be run of one channel in to 2 ohms.

If the amp is too powerful, shurly by not cranking it, and also setting the limiter right, I will be ok?

Limiters I've had no experience of, so can't say. One thing I will say, as it's worth reiterating again and again:
It's possible to get full rated output from an amp, if you shove a big enough signal into the front end. The knobs on the front aren't volume controls, they're gain controls. They only control how much you amplify the incoming signal, not how much power you are giving out. That's why it's quite possible to turn the dials on the front to a quarter, and still blow the speaker's.That's why your best bet is always to get gear which is as balanced as possible.
Steve, four real apostrophes, and one bonus one.

Electrovoice is conservative on their speaker ratings with the continuous RMS rating of 400 watts and 800 watts program and 1600 watts peak.:D
I have a set of EV 18 eliminator subs and they can take a beating.;)

I got a program I need to program the amp with! TOUNGE TWISTER!
What frequency should I set the Crossover too?

I take it your just going to use this amp to drive the subs and you have another amp to drive your top & mid range cabs.
The whole idea of the X over point is the subs only get the frequency range that they are designed for so have a look at the specs for the subs and set up the XTI so they get those frequency,s .
In a ideal world your top cabs would be better if they only got the frequency above that x over point ,thats were a electronic crossover comes in.Do your top cabs have a passive crossover built in.
Just have a play around let your ears be the judge.

Tony, I've been wrong before in this post, for which I apologise, but I think he's already got a Behringer x-over, hasn't he? Just use that, and set the Crown as if it were full range. ( But of course, it'll only be receiving the low output from the x-over ).

Yes he could but as he has got the XTI 6000 which is a amazing bit of kit he might as well use the on board processor got to be better than the Behringer.
But i still have no idea what he is using for mid top to go with the 4x EV subs
the XTI wii work down to 2ohms so it is possible he could run the whole system from one amp but need more info on what the other cabs spec are.

Agree with Excalibur, use the active crossover connected to one amp for the tops and one for the bass bins. That way you can experiment with crossover frequency to get the best sound. Start at 120hz and adjust it up or down to suit.
I wouldn't run the XTI down to 2 Ohms. I have seen independent test that show the power for the low frequencies drops off for the low frequencies when used at 2 ohms (can be less than you would get using 8 ohms). Crown were confronted over the test results but pointed out that the amplifier spec stated what power the amp would output at 1kz which, in the test, it struggled to achieve.
If you bought it second hand, you may want to check that it isn't one that is being recalled by Crown by checking the serial number here http://www.crownaudio.com/ca2010/ .
Personally I think Crown has fallen from grace. This is not the first time they have had faults with new amps (remember the cheap ribbon cables that caused problems anyone?). UK support is not that great and they are not the company they used to be.

Ah yes, is that the blighter with a propensity for spontaneous combustion? I read something about that.

Hi Tony, yes there were some problems with the first run of XTI amps from Crown as far as i know this has now been sorted if you look at the Crown site you will notice the XTI 6000 was not one of the models affected my this recall so no scaremongering please.
I my self have 4 XTI 4000 in our hire stock and as yet spot on.
The original post and in fact all the way through has been about running 4xEV subs i suggested the XTI 4000 would be perfect running 2 per side into 4 ohms no were is there any mention about the rest of the rig other than he has a electronic crossover so i find it very hard to give advice when i do not have all the information.
I do agree with your advice re running in to 2 ohms as performance is compromised and he could just as well use the electronic crossover to keep things simple thanks for your advice.:)
