View Full Version : This Bank Holiday, Are we all having a busy weekend.

This to me is always the busiest weekend, this August bank holiday weekend can be busier than any Christmas. I could split myslef up 4 times in for each gig slot this weekend and still be left with gigs to cover if I took them all on. This week I have a Wedding on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night PLUS a Christening on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
I've had to put people on to friends of mine (which I usually don't do) as they are all desperate for DJ's due to the amount of bookings around for this weekend. Each August bank holiday it is the same.
Also I have agents constantly ringing me up asking if I'm working Saturday night or Sunday daytime.
What is it like for everyone else ?
Casino compere job Friday night
40th Birthday Party Saturday.
Nothing else.
Although did have to turn down another job for Saturday as already booked.

For me Yes, very busy.
Thursday: Wedding
Friday: Wedding
Saturday: Wedding
Sunday: Wedding & Uplighting (in same venue but different clients)
Monday: Nothing, although I may try and find a game of football to watch, probably Alfreton or Matlock can't be bothered to drive down to South London to watch AFC as I know the M1 & 25 will be a mare :D

I have a lovely quiet bank holiday weekend.
Thursday - Nothing
Friday - Nothing
Saturday - Nothing
Sunday - Pub quiz
This has worked out well, because a couple of weeks ago I had discos on Friday and Saturday, last weekend I did a gig with a daytime set up miles away on an army base (so silly security) & next Saturday I have a wedding where I'll be on site for well over 12 hours...so I'll be making the most of the next few days.

Sorry Rob are you serious? So silly security?
It's an armed forces base, which has guns and stuff. How about we just let folks wander in and take the guns. Or better still let some lunatic hide a bomb in some DJ gear as DJ's just get let in.

On arrival, I had to show photo ID, fill out my details on two different forms, explain who I was & why I was there, have my photo taken, be given two passes (one for me & one for my van) and have my van searched, all of which I understand.
Here's the crazy bit. When it came to searching my van, they checked underneath it, inside the front, and underneath the bonnet. They then got me to open the back, which was full of all my disco gear in various boxes, flight cases & bags...and after staring at it for a few seconds, they just said "That's fine" and I was on my way. I could have had ANYTHING in the back of my van, and it was exactly the same when I last played at this venue.
What's the point in searching inside my van, underneath it & under the bonnet, but not checking in the back, which could have ANYTHING hidden inside?
THAT'S what I mean about silly security!

I'm surprised that there is a lot of you free. In Liverpool and surrounding areas it is always chocka, that's the good thing. The problem is though that we have to do 3 gigs to get what you guys elsewhere in the country get for doing 2 or so.

The last 3 times I played a military base, they didn't evenlook at the van. just signed me in & gave me the relevant passes (me & van).

Many years ago, but my searches were much more rigorous. ;) Perhaps you have a more honest face than Rob and I. though how they spotted it through your facial hair, I'm damned if I know.

Have to say that I have regular gigs at both Penhale training camp (army) and RAF St. Mawgan and even though they've known me for years, they're pretty diligent on security. :)

Wedding Friday & Saturday
Christening today - That was very odd. They rang me a few days ago wanting some background music whilst folk had a drink/mingled and we agreed on a price. (£100 for two hours of quiet background music...I wasn't doing anything else and I popped the two mackies in mums car)
At the end the Grandad came over to thank me (he was Polish) and said "How much do you want" and pulled out a few thousand in £20 notes.
I explained we had already agreed on a price but he insisted on giving me more.
