A couple of times recently I have read members saying that they don't ever post 'hello' to new members.

I'm just curious as to why you wouldn't want to say hello to new members of the forum to make them feel welcome?

Not really sure but the more welcome new members are made the more chance of them becoming a part of the forum.

Just think that newbie could be someone who answers your last minute question before a gig, could even be someone who passes you work.

If I'm aware of someone new starting a thread, I will often say hi xxx before giving my answer.

However, I don't welcome people in the newbies forum, and I'm happy to explain why.

Throughout my life, whenever I joined a new branch of the bank or any new club, society, band, organisation etc I was always initially welcomed by the manager or the person / one of the people in charge (rather than just a normal member).

Due to these previous experiences, it became instilled into me that this is how things should be, so I feel the same should apply to the MDD. Therefore, I think new members should initially be welcomed by the forum owners, admins & mods.

Having said that, If other normal members are happy to welcome new members in the newbie forum, I don't have a problem with that, it's just something I don't feel I should be doing myself for the reasons stated.

I hope this clarifies my position.

:)

So no-one other than the manager ever said hello to you when you started a new job?

What utter :Censored:

I feel a bit shy welcoming people - I think it's because I don't consider I've been a contributing member long enough to have earnt that 'right'.

You dont work for us Rob.

If you were introduced into a group by someone would you expect everyone to at least say hi?

If I'd known you would give a rude response like that, I wouldn't have taken the time to answer your OP.

I'm not sure what it has to do with what I've said in this thread, though?

Yes, once I'd been welcomed by someone in charge...and as already stated, if I see a thread from someone who is new, I WILL say hi before answering their post.

Lesson learned.Possibly more 'direct' than usual (and maybe you missed the  at the end of it), but come on.......!

I can understand people who say they feel shy / don't feel they've earned the right / miss many of them, etc, and I also at least respect the honesty of people who say they can't be bothered, but to compare the situation to a formal induction into a job, and to suggest that no-one other than the manager should be saying hello to you is twaddle, IMHO.

I'm sorry if my opinion offends you Rob. "Lesson learned."

I forget to check all the time, and probably miss welcoming some members. If any are reading this, apologies, it's not intentional.

With regards to welcoming new members, it's nice to be nice. Being the 'new guy' can sometimes be a bit daunting, and a few friendly hello's can sometimes make all the difference to whether people decide to hang about and be a part of the community.

If somebody takes the time to join and say hello, I think it's common courtesy to say a little hi back.

I wasn't comparing it to a formal induction to a job. That was just one of a number of things I mentioned, including clubs, societies & associations, and that's how I think of the MDD.

With hindsight, I should have just said "I feel it's the job of the site staff to welcome newbies" and left it at that.

To add to my previous answer, another reason I don't look at the newbies forum is because when I last looked, many of the threads just said "Hi, I'm new" followed by about a dozen replies all along the lines of "Welcome to the forum"...which I found to be rather boring to say the least, and which told me nothing about the new members.

There also seems to be some confusion about the newbies forum, even among site staff, because when someone starts a thread without introducing themselves in the newbies forum first, they are sometimes directed to a thread which says that new members posts are initially moderated & that the moderation is usually removed when they've introduced themselves, but they are sometimes simply told that if they introduce themselves in the newbies forum, they are more likely to get replies to their thread.

Funny you should mention that thread, it was reworded a few days ago to cover both points. http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11711

Hopefully the new phrasing clears up any confusion you might have.

I too am guilty of not welcoming new members. To be frank, I don't see the need as it tends to be a thread of : 'Hi, I'm new', followed by xx amount of 'Welcome!'s. Once or twice, I have posted a welcome message, along with a question about something they posted in their first post... to which received no reply. So it was clear to me that they were just going through the motions as dictated by the forum rules, and had no real interest in introducing themselves.

To the few members who generally are friendly enough to reply and elaborate, i apologise if I haven't welcomed you! :)

So, if you were in the pub with a group of mates* & somebody new joined you, you wouldn't say hello & make them feel welcome?

If your back is up to it, you can bow out again after you answer.

* (aside from the professional advice that is on offer) this is really the closest comparison to what the forum is like that I can think of.

I'm guilty of not saying hello to new members. I will try to say hello if I notice a new member in a thread wherever possible. I know it only takes 2 seconds to add "Hello and Welcome" to a Welcome thread but I just don't it and it's rude.

Apologies.

Indolence, lethargy,and other of my many and various failings. Guilty as charged your honour. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

I only tend to say hello if nudged by seeing them post, and particularly if they're in my neck of the woods.

Must try harder. ;)

I think that its a bit broader than that Neil.....

I've seen new members get a really rough ride on here....and some have disappeared because of it.I was one post away from jacking it myself.(How about you leave all the obvious comments to yourself??;) :D ;) :D

ONE of the reasons I don't bother is I would guess the chances of Newbies getting beyond 100 posts is only 50%.There doesn't seem to be the ethos of getting as many DJ's around you as possible on the Forum.Mondays villian could be Fridays MDD Supporter:eek:  :eek:And the owners deserve an awful lot more for what they do!!:) :) :)

I certainly wouldn't wait for Darren to have welcomed them though before I said Hi. I dont think we have to be that formal on here as Rob thinks.
When I joined up it was nice to be welcomed by a variety of people.
