Some of you may remember the problems I had with my Crown XLS802 amp a while back. I thought I was going mad!
After 3 weeks it was finally delivered today. It was returned to HTFR who then sent it to the manufacturers. After a number of calls and chasing up it's progress I can tell you this.
It took a week to get it from HTFR to the manufacturers and then another week before they even looked at it (ok, there was a bank holiday in there too).
I called again on Monday to say that I really needed it back now as I was very busy and it was my main amp (I have a Cerwin Vega which is just as good so not really desperate but thought it may hurry them up!). HTFR said that it had been done and should be with them by Thursday. When they received it they would get it to me by Friday (today) and they did!
I could have left it at that but decided to ask what was wrong with it....If I hadn't then I would never have known as it came back as I had sent it. There was no paperwork telling me what was wrong with it. Not that I am technical and I still don't understand what they told me but it would have been nice to get the exact details so that I could post them on here to those in the know.
Anyway, apparently...Something to do with the PX and not earthing properly and then something to do with a problem with the TX?
Not sure what that means, all chinese to me so anyone????

Was it backtested at the repair shop overnight or for a lengthy period?
I agree with Dave;)

Something to do with the PX and not earthing properly and then something to do with a problem with the TX?
...
TX refers to the transformer, and I'd put money on PX being a wonky reference to the entire power supply assembly - TX, smoothing capacitors, high voltage regulation circuitry, rectifiers etc.
The XLS is essential a 're-hashed' GB series amp, and we own a monitor rack of the 602's. I'm not unfamiliar with the internals, but based on what you've written I can really put down any meaningful response!
Man 1 - 'Yeah, my car won't start'
Man 2 - 'Hmmm. Something is wrong with the engine...'
Perhaps you can email Crown?

Well, thanks for the replies guys and also thanks for worrying me!
Now, I'm not as silly as I may look you know and yesterday, when I was setting up for tonights wedding, I set the whole rig up and tested the Crown with it for around 20 minutes and all was fine.
Also, being the paranoid git that I am, even though it was working fine, I didn't think that I should be testing it out at a wedding so I swapped it for the Cerwin Vega. I used the Crown all night last night at my residency and it was fine so I would say it is sorted.
Davesounds - I guess you know what you are talking about (same as Happy Jack) so I won't even dare argue as I know sod all technically but what I will say is the following, which is what I was told.
HTFR told me that it went off to the manufacturers. Apparently Crown have a factory in the UK (not sure where, didn't follow it up as I just wanted the thing fixed). The warranty is a 3 year one and it was 14 months into it.
The original problem was that sometimes when I pushed the power button on, it would power up and then go off again. It happened on various occasions and then became more regular. On the final occasion, from what I could see inside, a small flame appeared to the right side of the grill (looking at it from the front). After this it wouldn't power on again.

A Small flame ?? A Flame ???? flippin heck id not be over keen on the same amplifier back i can tell you!
One of my Chevins Died about 10 years ago at a gig ( didnt notice it till late as it was on the bass bins )
I sent it back to a very nice man in Keithley who replaced the Electronic Swiching Module ( there no mains transformer in Chevins ) so a Television engineer only can fix them . But i still EVEN now regard the thing with suspicion every time i gig with it .....I suppose after 10 years its been repaired eh?

Well, you are entitled to your opinion mate.
For the time being I will trust that the manufacturers have corrected the fault. Everything seems to be ok at the moment and it was PAT tested too.
