I let people lean over to speak. Sometimes they will come behind the stand. It depends how intoxicated and threatening they are!

May I just point out that any inference that we as DJ's favour punter's requests based on how pretty they are is so far removed from the truth, it's laughable. ( Says the man who had to explain over the mic to Saturday's groom that th reason his track had been shunted down the playlist in favour of something else was that " She's prettier than you are ") :o :o :o :o :o :o

If they come to the front of the console I normally beckon them to the side as it's easier for me to hear them as they're now 'behind' the speakers.

yep. My hearing sometimes gets damaged by girls thinking I am deaf and shouting in my ear :mad:

It really annoys me as its one step closer to getting deaf early. Much better of they are invited to come behind the decks.

On the subject matter though. I agree with Simon if they approach the front I will direct them to the side. I hate anyone leaning against the stand

Never ever over the booth!

Two reasons, firstly its harder to hear them. I'm deaf as a post by nature and a loud pa doesnt help so I motion them to come around the side.

Secondly it removes the "barrier" in a way and means you can hear each other because you might need an "exchange" rather than a simple demand.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who's mutton.

I'm ok when it's quiet, but add backgrond noise such as people talking in a pub, and I really struggle...so you can imagine my problems at discos right behind the speakers.

It's embarrassing, as I find it almost impossible to hear what people are saying to me, even if they're literally shouting right into my ear. In many cases, having already said pardon on several occasions, I just give them the pad & pen so they can write down what they want!

Absolutely 100% (also takes away the stray hand leaning on the CDJ), and also agree with the other post whereby it may be an exchange rather than a simple request.

OK then, now we've got a broad consensus of sorts, lets move the goalposts a tad.

Scenario. You're working a gig with a band. They're not playing ball. They've commandeered the entire stage with PA, lights and monitors. There's an alcove at the side, on the floor, where you can just fit your deckstand, but no overhead. You have a tripod with you, and can rig it with a few parcans et al in a similar alcove at the other side. So, lights and sound no problem, but the only way to set up the playout is to put it in the alcove facing the wall, and you're on the floor with the punters.

Do you happily do this, as you know it's the best option, or throw the toys out of the pram? In the past, especially when we had lightboxes, I've done this more than once. It has its pros and cons, but makes best use of the minimal space available.

Thoughts please, and remember you're working within my scenario. ;) Saying you don't have any parcans is not funny or helpful.

Wouldn't be happy no would have to grin and bear it (maybe unplug one of the bands amplifiers to make myself feel a bit better!!!) :D ;)

Being the prima donna that I am, I would definitely throw my toys out of the pram and teddy out of the cot :devil:
