Morning from Manchester

Hi All,

I am a mobile DJ who retired!?! just over 18 years ago and have decided to start again - am I mad?

Having got married and with a young family at the age of 30, I decided it was time to settle down and put the decks away (yes! it was in the vinyl era), I have always kept up with the music scene and my collection.

Anyway I was invited to a BBQ the other week and the host asked me to provide the music, I still had two 80 watt speakers, a collection of over 33000 songs in mp3 format, laptop and an old amplifier.

Anyway to cut a long story short I was asked if I would consider doing a party in a pub (45th Birthday) on Oct 2nd which I agreed to, I mentioned I was considering starting up to a few people and have already picked up 3 more nights without even performing!

I had some lights and have picked up a few more off ebay cheaply - very different from the old large bulb variety i used to use, also got new amp, wireless mic etc.

I am now 48 and can't wait to get started again and am lucky that I don't suffer with nerves but still not sure what it is like out there nowadays?

So any ideas or help on what you think the main changes have been over the last decade would be much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum - you're not mad (but it does help sometimes!).
There's lots of threads containing playlists and song suggestions for different audiences on here - invaluable if you're starting out again and need to get up to speed with what works for a mobile DJ these days (though I think you'll find a lot hasn't changed either!) :) :) :)

Thanks, I have been reading up on a few threads over the last few days before deciding to join ;)

I will add that me and the missus are now ready to get out and get our social life back on track - in fact she has been pushing me.

I used to have a few resident pubs in the past in and around Manchester, but having really only started going out again over the last year or so - Bargain booze has a lot to answer for! - noticed that most jocks in these places now "don't talk" Is this the norm?

Another thing I am not sure about is how much to charge? in my era it was £80, I know this will be easy enough to find out.

When I get more involved I will post some of my past experiences some good some bad, but many funny! incl fireman ruining a wedding first dance, a wedding cake that fell all over the dancefloor, setting a stage on fire (not linked to fireman story) wedding fights etc

I'm guessing the majority of the tracks on your laptop are ripped from CDs?

If so, I'd advise you to look into a ProDub License

Thanks for that I was wondering what I would need, I have also purchased OTS DJ as my cousin uses this and I have had a play around with this, each time I have gone to his house. I always kept my DJing bug.

I know there may be better products to buy on the market but this will suffice, I am not really into the mixing of my own tracks as that is way over my head!

I have to say the one major advantage I have seen is how much less equipment I need to carry now, my dodgy back will really appreciate it as will my missus, who could never get around the concept of taking all my record collection when i normally stuck to the usual tried and trusted brigade - especially as I had her help carry them ;)
