Greetings Folks I am back!!!!!

And back with a question for you all.

When you do your event do you take your diaries with you in case you get an enquiry on the night or do you give the person a card and ask them to call you at another time??

Until recently the diary came everywhere I went.

Now as I have a couple of local jocks I know the few dates I cant quote for so I give them a card and ask them to send me the details of what they are looking for.

Afterall at someones wedding I dont really feel its the right time to discuss someone elses.

I must say I don't like talking about other bookings at the one I am doing.

I have my diary on my iphone so can check straight away if I'm available, if I'm happy to take the gig I pencil it in and ask them to contact me within 1 week to confirm the booking and discuss the details.

While I'm working, I would just give them a card and ask that they call later when I am at home. I don't take the diary to events as then I can accept or refuse gigs based on other things I have going on, rather than a client seeing an empty date in the diary and feeling pressured into accepting a gig I would rather not do.

Same here, and can even email a quote which they receive when they get home. Great piece of technology as you don't run the risk of misplacing your diary.

I wouldn't start doing deals at other peoples events. TBH I have never been asked.

i also have my calendar synced on my phone, not posh enough to have an iphone, but my nokia 5800 does the same job.

if i get an enquiry at another gig, i check the date, then take the clients number and call them the next day.

There's no way I'd take my diary to functions, as I already have enough stuff to take with me & think about.

People sometimes ask for a card at functions, and when they DO ask a question, it's usually "What do you charge?" rather than "Are you available on xxx?"

On the rare occasions when they DO ask about availability, I give them a card & ask them to contact me.

I seem to remember a lot of people banging on about how important it is to concentrate only on the client whose party it is etc and yet people take diaries and phones etc to check availability? :lol:

Often the events are 6 to 12 months away.

Also by then the demon alcohol will have worn off and you can have a sensible conversation---HOW MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's something I'd also be concerned about, especially as I've never taken it with me before.

Secretary!!! :lol: My p.a who travels everywhere with me would tell me if i was free that day!!!!!

I gave them the option there is my card and when I give them it i say "would you like me to ring you at a convenient time for yourself?"

How on earth do you manage to email a quote from your iphone!? Do you have pre made templates on your phone or just send a shortened email? I wouldn't like to try typing a comprehensive quote on an iphone whilst concentrating on my mixing..

Templates - not really my style, but finding a lot of occasions where I need to act quick to seal the booking.

surely it's best to seal the deal quickly than giving them time to think about it (sober) and perhaps change their mind! Obviously, this can be done during buffet or after the gig and shouldn't interfere with the mixing!

Just reflect on how many people ask for a card but never make contact again despite assurances of how brilliant you were ;)

Unless you get a cash deposit on the night or a signed Contract on the spot (Contracts signed under the influence of alcohol not enforceable) its all pretty meaningless IMHO

Because the next day, the email is there ready for them to read hence jogging there memory and the still remember how good I was (hopefully). They don't bother getting other quotes etc because my email is nice and handy, they can hit reply, type a few words and send it - simple.:)

A couple of weeks ago I lost a £500 booking to a fellow DJ because the potential client rang me when I was at a gig. This fellow DJ was in, answered the phone, got the gig. A lot of the time you have to be quick and 'in the right place at the right time' ;) :)
