I know exactly what you mean but they wouldn't give the effect. (very weak, probably won't last)

You're best buying some cheap moving heads. :approve:

Jeez.... I had 4 of them in the 80s nailed onto a plank with a fuzz on each end  :zip:

Being a PAR36 means they're plenty bright enough for small rooms, so I think CB's comments are a bit premature, BUT, and here's the BUT - you have absolutely no control over them other than set the position of the head and switch it on & off. You can almost guarantee that even if they all start off pointing in the same direction, within no time at all they'll be all over the place.

"Moving head" and "Cheap" don't really belong in the same sentence. You could achieve the effect you're after with some cheaper scanners or barrels BUT will need to control them; mini controllers like the CA8 could possibly get you there but it would be very tricky and you'd need to learn stenography first :p - or a basic DMX controller would be advisable.

DMX isn't hard once you get to grips with the terminology and principles. There's a million half-decent tutorials out there.

I can vouch the Imove 5s are awesome and you can control them VERY easily with a dmx controller, choose what color and gobo you like and leave it on that if that is the type of thing you are after

You wont with that light. That is utter trash.

Most modern lighting fixtures have standalone which means you will not have to use DMX. You can also get CA8 controllers which do quite a few functions and are not difficult.

What lights do you have at the moment?

If you have a budget that would be great :)

Can I just say why don't you try some research, and look on websites at different lights or even venture, into a shop near you and see what different lights do and the price ranges.

This has probably already been covered in this thread by others (sorry, haven't read all the replies) but the light in the link is nothing more than a Par 36 scanner. There's absolutely no control over it. All it does is pan from left to right.

Complete waste of money.

In fairness Simon, we dont know where hes based, and if you told me to visit my local DJ shop...well i'd have a job to say the least as we havent any. maybe the OP is in a similar situation and has to rely on information from people and the internet.

Anyhow, moving heads:

Have you got about 500k to inverst in your rigg. as at a guess i bet thats what that would cost to purchase

As for the ebay link yes lets all go back to the 70's / 80's retro setups

The lights in the clip are probably Martin Macs at a cost of £2,000 each plus. Not going to happen for £40. Someone looking at £40 lights is not going to be forking out for moving heads.

Other option is to get some second hand DMX scanners and get them DMX'd up so you can have white light on an open gobo. Similar effect but nowhere near as good at a fraction of the money.

I was going to get my Martin MX4's on the DMX system and use them for white moving spots in lieu of spending a fortune on Macs.

I remember the scanners linked to in the OP.

They were the moving heads of the eighties!

I was thinking that. cheap scanners it is then. Im sure you can get a set of four second hand for a good price - link them up and CA8 them.

Easy and will take you two mins. The CA8 will run them automatically.

I thought this but then realised about 25 years ago my lighting consisited of 8 light bulbs, in cabled bulb holders with the bulbs covered in theatre lighting gel. In order to get them to flash we wired them to fluorescent strip starters, then placed them on a table infront of us. We thought these flashing lights did the business and created a professional effect (I was 14!)

So could it be genuine?

(and as they say PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, or anywhere else for that Matter)

That's how I control my lights apart from a CA8 for the par cans. I let the Martin EFX's do their own thing...but if I need to turn them off etc, I use that Marplins remote control.

Quite nifty I think. :beer1:

I hope the EFX you refer to are the 500 version as the 600 & 700 versions use metal halide lamps and it is not a good idea to switch on & off by this method.

On at beginning of the night - off at the end is OK. But flicking them on and off during the night isn't very good for the bulbs :)

Indeed it is, deciphering people's rotten spelling, rubbish grammar and terrible use of the English language.

It's even worse when people call equipment by the incorrect terminology. ;) :D
