View Full Version : Female / lady DJ's
Denty

Evening all. not been on here for a long time, various reasons but all legal!
Daughter is doing a music technology course, enjoys all aspects and styles of music, and is thinking of "following in dad's footsteps" as another avenue in her musical career
Simple question - are there any/many female DJ's out there, are they good at what they do or do you see gimmicks/poor shows thus giving chick-jocks a bad reputation?
Thks in anticipation

Can't see why a female couldn't do just as good a job as a male.

There is no reason a woman cannot be a dj especially since the new generation of lightweight equipment has been released. Saying that though I have had some looks at some real bad female djs and have had cringed badly on both their setups and how they dj. But saying that I have seen just as many bad male djs doing exactly the same thing so it is not gender specific. My only gripe is that they tend to get treated a lot nice than their male counterparts in the way of drink offers help with carry in etc. But that is just sour grapes lol.

As long as they look good who cares about the mixing :p
No not many out there - just like there are not too many decent male wedding planners etc. :)
It is an extremely good USP for weddings as most of the time the person who books the DJ is female and most the people who dance are girls.

I've never understood why there are so few female DJs, whether on the radio or running mobiles.
There is no reason why they can't be just as good as the guys.

Up until about a year ago, my other DJ was female (not saying Mike has had a sex change  ) She was actually very good too but the problem was, she wouldn't listen to advice. I advised her many times in the nicest possible way about the presentation side of things regarding the equipment yet she wouldn't take it on board.
It was a good selling point actually with reference to the amount of children's parties I was getting at the time. She was the type of person that would get out there with a radio mic and do all the actions with the children whereas I felt a bit uncomfortable. Also, I think the parents may have felt a bit more at ease with a female DJ?

Rob, you're right. Steve, I suspect that sadly, you're also right. :( :(
Hey ho, dried frog pills time. I think the female contingent are handicapped from the start, by a view that " It's not a job for a girl" . Certainly on the mobile scene, as we often have to deal with verbally and even physically abusive punters. Also, the view that they can't carry the kit in, or wire it up. There's a shop in the village run by a young lady, which deals in TV/HiFi etc, and she is exceedingly well versed in the nuts and bolts of the game.
Denty, I foresee a hard road ahead for your daughter, sadly. Will it ever change? Somehow, I doubt it. :(

I see no reason why the female of the species can't cut it as a decent mobile jock. In fact, most of the KJs around my home town are women and they are all full-timers.
I've worked with women DJs before and seem to have the advantage of knowing instinctively what other women like to dance to whereas us blokes have to learn this art and hone our crowd-reading skills more.
But, all in all, I definitely think this is a unisex job so maybe more women should give it a go.

Like the others, I agree that a female DJ could/would do just as good a job, if not better. However, I personally wouldn't want my girlfriend out on her own late at night, carrying heavy equipment alone into car parks, with some potentially dodgy characters hanging about outside.
If that's my being sexist, then so be it!

I certianly hope not. The borderline hysteria in this country that every man is a predatory paedophile until proven otherwise makes me want to leave it....amongst many other things.
In response to the original point, there is no reason why a woman can't do it, and I'd be pleased for my eldest to carry on when I jack in in three or four years time.

This is one thing that you don't see often enough.
I know of three female djs (off the top of my head)
One mainly does karaoke, for an agent I sometimes works for, and she is well liked, and some pubs the agent has only wants her!
The other one is fantastic and can run just about any night. I'm interested in her working for me, while I go into hospital for my op.
However, the last one was in a city centre bar, in Sunderland and was shocking!

I can think of three female DJ's / Karaoke DJ's doing residencies around our way. Looking at presentation skills, quality of music and equipment set up, I'd rank all of them above any of the men doing a similar job in nearby venues.

Tell me any other Lady dj who has been around as long and still has a slot on the UK,s major radio station she must be doing something right.
The original post was just Lady DJs not about there mixing ability as this is a Mobile Disco Forum as i keep getting reminded my certain members.

There are hundreds of male Djs on the club scene that are ok just like her but are not mind blowing and get half her fee ,i wonder if its down to her appearance or the quality of the mixing.
Me thinks the former but just a opinion.

I know the difference, I just can't believe you're suggesting that the better looking a female mobile DJ is, the more she can charge.
If that was the case, Cheryl Cole would have gone down the mobile DJ route & fast become England's richest woman!

Your right in the first instance, way of the mark in the second instance the reason, nobody gets stinking rich being a mobile DJ and as for Cheryl Cole you got a crush on her or something because she does nothing for me.

Yes i am in total agreement ,to be honest i have been spoilt going out helping my son who works with all the top club DJs Carl Cox ,Teisto, Sash, are a few i can recall and he tells me that Aussie bloke on radio one Zane ? is amazing when he is mixing but i think a lot of the girl DJs are a bit of a novelty.
Talking about production we have one of our tunes on the new Ministry of Sound 2010 Mash up album Track 7 CD 2 .
