Age you started DJ'ing: 16 (hopsital radio), 18 (pirate radio), 21 (mobile discos).

Why did you become a DJ? It was just something I became interested in when I was in my early teens. Don't know why, though.

Glad you did? Very!

What age were you? As above.

Parents approve? With the exception of the pirate radio, yes.

Wish you had done something different? No.

Enjoy it? Very much.

Profitable? Yes. I earn lots more than in my bank days for a fraction of the hours.

Does it pay for your needs? Easily!

Did you want to do bigger things? Nope.

If anything, what would you have done different in your life? I can honestly say nothing. Things have panned out perfectly for me.

What would you like to have done/do with your life? When I retire, I'm looking forward to having lots of nice holidays to make up for not having any at the moment. The USA, Thailand, South Africa & Australia are top of the list.

Enjoy it? Sometimes. When it's not going to plan I get a bit frustrated but when I'm on fire it's great! :)
Profitable? It helps me get the nicer things in life.

Why did you become a DJ?:- Got roped into it!!! local youth club got let down and I had the top 20 singles so i was paid £10 to do the gig. I played all the 'A' sides in the first half then after the break I played all the 'B' sides!!!

Why did you become a DJ? It wasn't really planned. The DJ booked at the hotel I was Deputy Manager at was called away during our Xmas party, he left his kit and I took over with no experience whatsoever. It wasn't something I was particularly keen to do or interested in, but I'd heard him do it enough to have a go.
Glad you did? I suppose so. Though I've been at it a while, I've had a few spells where I've gone a couple of years without it.
Parents approve? I don't think they cared either way.
Wish you had done something different? Tough to answer, because I've never been full time, so have always done something different alongside the disco.
Enjoy it? It's a job. Sometimes I enjoy it, though not very often.
Profitable? Yep.
Does it pay for your needs? It wouldn't support my family, but it has never needed to, and I've never tried to make it do so.
Did you want to do bigger things? The closest I can get to answering this is by saying I don't intend to be doing this in three years time. I'm only doing this to fund my course.
If anything, what would you have done different in your life? Drank less and worked harder at 6th form. Drank less and worked harder at the very beginning of my career as a hotel manager.
What would you like to have done/do with your life? I'm studying medicine at the minute, so fingers crossed will be a doctor in the next few years.

Just a quick observation Charlie, I would be amazed if anyone on here isnt making a profit out of DJ'ing!!! Even if its only say £50 a year!!

Why did you become a DJ? Dad was DJ... had a small 200 watt sound system, dual cd deck and mixer (plus lights) so said we would dj a mates 16th birthday ... and so it began.
Glad you did? Definately!

Parents approve? Yes, to an extent as they had to start driving us about (and still do a bit) Plus mum hates the space the gear takes up under the stairs.
Wish you had done something different? Not really to be honest! Built up the business from the ground up and now we have younger guys asking us for advice on stuff and get bookings here and there.
Enjoy it? Yes, apart from doing really long stretches where your not the only entertainment and you have to wait around (when a band or other performer is playing)
Profitable? We have money in the bank and have upgraded lighting , playout and will be upgrading to new speakers very soon. But its not our main income to therefore profit is important but not life or death.
Does it pay for your needs? Definately, we get a fair wage each and re invest into the business.
Did you want to do bigger things? Always, in a dream world we would now have other DJ's who work for us while we are at uni... but that wont happen. We cant trust anyone else unfortunately!
If anything, what would you have done different in your life? Im still living it... maybe 10 - 15 years down the line ill answer that.

If so then I suggest you do a poll and see how much profit people actually make, that would be way more helpful for you.

Even taking into account the amount some people spend on equipment ?? :D

I think it will be suprising the amount of people who 'think' they earn a good amount, but if worked the figures out correctly are actually making very little.

I have a business plan and I'm still only part time!

With having the young kids I need the stability and security from being an employee. The only problem is, I work in local government and that security blanket is about to be whipped away :eek: so going full time may be a real option by April next year (or even sooner!).

TBH Ben, I don't know.

I'd like to go into property.

Get a house on mortgage and rent it out (so effectively they are paying the mortgage) then boom once the mortgage is paid you have a house to sell.

I want to do something and be someone. (Don't we all) I don't want to struggle financially but be comfortable.

I've done a lot of research in taxing. Wouldn't mind opening up a firm. Cleaning and laundry is also something I wouldn't mind doing.

Wish you had done something different?: I did. DJing was a part-time thing for over 20 years.

Profitable?: It was. Very.
Does it pay for your needs?: Yes. Day job paid the mortgage and bills. DJing paid for the nice cars and lovely holidays plus the occasional luxury.
Did you want to do bigger things?: No. I'm only mildly ambitious. I don't want to rule the world, just a small part of it.
If anything, what would you have done different in your life?: Not sold my first, second, third or fourth houses. I should have kept them all on let-to-buy. The first mortgage would just about have been paid off.

Wish you had done something different? I do something different by day. I am a commercial property development surveyor and asset manager
Enjoy it? When I don't overload myself with too much work. Can be tough when day jobing as well.
Profitable? I could not live off DJ'ing even if I worked on my own.
Does it pay for your needs? It pays for the family jollies and other stuff, but see above, I could never make it pay for me.
Did you want to do bigger things? I always want to do bigger things and making positive steps.
If anything, what would you have done different in your life? I would not be messing about in property, but would have got into corporate finance. I am good with numbers (which is why I am good at development appraisals), but make nothing like the bankers do.
What would you like to have done/do with your life? I am content with my lot. I have a lovely family, good jobs - I like to play music - nice home and have had some good times. The future - I just look to keep moving up the steps.

I guess your parents have suggested DJ'ing is good fun, but you need to get yourself a career. Am I right?
