Active Speaker Advice Needed...

Hi folks.

I'm researching kit for the new rig and I've reached the stage of looking at sound. I'm interested in going down the powered speakers route and have come accross these:

My questions are simple. Does anyone use the VPX-15 speakers and are they any good? I've looked at other speakers but I'm only interested right now on opinions on these units from people that have used them.

Not heard those but after picking up my mackies today guess what I'm gonna suggest ;)

As I was explaining to Chris, I can't stretch to a grand for a pair of speakers at this moment in time so the Mackies are out of the question. Besides, from what I've seen, I don't think the sound quality justifies the price. My passive E-115s sound better (imo) than the active Mackies that I've heard. But that's probably because I've got my current main sound system tweaked just the way I want it.

My interest with the StudioMaster speakers comes from being a happy user of StudioMaster powered mixers for over ten years so I'd thought I'd look in to their speaker range.

I watched a group using these speakers paired up with the active subs. The guys in the band were decent musicians but the sound was pretty awful to me. On that showing alone, I wouldn't go near the Studiomasters.

The mixers they made years ago were pretty decent (I had one as my first powered mixer) but much has changed and now Studiomaster is just another brand name made in China or wherever.

If you need a fan on your Mackie you have one of the following.
#1. Version 1 models.
#2. A problem with your settings.
#3. A duff unit that needs looking at.

IMO , folk who slag off the mackie srm 450's are either jealous cheers damian , had a bad experience :handbag: , don't know how to use their equipment correctly :Help: or just posturing :beatnik: ( I have found that there's a lot of posturing within these walls and I've only been a member for less than 24 hours.

Im sorry to say I do not rate the studiomasters. I played a gig in a venue in an adjoining room. Whenever he spoke on mic it was badly distorted and seemed to be a clipped signal at relativly low volume. I was running just my db 402 tops in the next room with about twice the audience and I still had a lot of headroom compared to them.
I have to say stay clear if you can afford to.

If you need a fan on your Mackie you have one of the following.

Seconded. Mine have been run hard on a few occasions and were about 30-40C on the heatsink. Run the gain at 12-o-clock, flattish EQ and all is fine.


Back OT:
For any speakers - asking in a forum is ok for reliability info/specs, but for actual sound quality, you really need to go listen yourself.
Would you ever ask in a forum about a new car, and then buy online based on that advise?

Most budget Actives are actually pretty good, spending a small amount extra and actually going to a retailer (rather than shopping online) should really help you decision.
WAudio actives are ok, and many hire companies use them, so perhaps visit your local retailer and ask for some side-by-side comparisons.

Know what you mean Matt but it might be worth having a listen anyway--its not unknown for some DJs to not have a clue about the technical side of the business including matching impedances etc and dodgy mike techniques--- I went to a Wedding a few years ago where the DJ had EV speakers--they sounded absolutely dreadful and we actually left early because the sound was rubbish--I know EV are a top brand, I listened to some a Band was using a month or so ago-- so obviously the DJ had got something wrong somewhere in the matching--it happens.

I know this from a few dubious comments on here by posters about Peavey speakers ;)

Lets get one thing straight i am a bit annoyed about your comment The problem was confirmed to be a duff unit But still other horror stories tell the tale about the overheating also.

I dont have the SRM450s anymore i got them repaired by Mackie and sold them cheap and upgraded to RCF It has been the best thing ive ever done so jealous definetely not.

Good advice there. It is actually quite hard to listen to speakers properly until you have actually purchased them, unless you can borrow off someone first.

The equipment linked to the speakers can also make a big difference. I occasionally do a venue which has cerwin vega speakers built in and they sound rubbish even though I have heard them on other places and they sounded good.

Agreed, I tend to note bands and disco speaker badges - if the same make keep sounding good despite what is most probably different set ups - maybe it’s the one for me!

:sorry: Am I forgiven ?Most of the members on here do have thick enough skins to take it & what may have been perceived by you as posturing was probably banter between people who have got to know each other over their months / years on this forum. Don't forget the written word is harder to perceive than the verbal one (you can't hear the tone or see the expression for one thing).

TBH I wouldn't worry too much about it, I don't think any great offence was taken by anyone.

Hi Dazzy D,

I've not heard anything good about those studiomaster speakers, quality is lacking.

I know you asked only about Studiomaster, but..

I have a pair of Wharfedale EVP-X15P's these are great in small venues and will cover up to 120 guests on thier own, add a active sub (or two) to boost the bottom end for anything bigger. Great value for under £600 a pair new.

If your on a budget try second hand?
