Naive question re speakers

I know this may seem like a naive question but I thought I'd ask anyway.
I am loaning one of my powered speakers(JBL EON) to a small venue for an event they are having. The mic will go straight into the speaker(no mixer).
My question is: If the chap who is using the mic wanders in front of the speaker is it guaranteed to howl/blow or is it only at a higher level?

Answer is, it depends. Mic type, volume level, tone settings if there are any on the powered cab, height of speaker, etc. Sorry to only say maybe.

Im not familiar with the speaker but all the powered ones ive had have had a switch that chances the input sensitivity too from line in to mic in...

Except the legendary Mackie 450, which simply turn the volume past twelve o'clock. Stupid idea, but there you go.

It does seem to have a mic sensitivity button.I take it that would make a big difference then?

Do you not have the user manual ?
If not , go to JBL's home page and have a read up.
Mike level (more sensitive) and line level (less sensitive ) are two quite different things in terms of input level.
If you try to run a mike into an Eon with the button set at LINE LEVEL you will get a low output from the speaker and the quality of what you CAN hear may be impaired.
What ever you do - make sure that the volume control on the Eon is turned all the way down, the level button is pressed IN and the mike is plugged in before you power up the speaker.
Watch out for feedback , you can get feedback even at low volume levels.
Your speaker can be seriously damaged in the hands of someone that doesn't know what they are doing.

I wouldn't trust someone with else with one of my Eons.
