Well, this is tonights playlist

Rare gig for an agent tonight who has forwarded me this playlist that the 30th birthday boy has taken ages in producing for his birthday. I spoke to his girlfriend who booked it to explain the unfortunate problems with the list such as playing the high energy Shine On You Crazy Diamond halfway through the night amongst many other anomolies and also other problems such as segways between the likes of The Smiths (Morrisey), Guy Mitchell, Jason Derulo and Oasis amongst many others but I got well thats what we want attitude. So I will turn up, no logo's, no names and several announcements throughout the night as to why I am playing the list in the order below, and why I am not taking requests. They said they are expecting 300 for a room that holds 220, as we all know, I'm going to wage a fiver that less than 80 show up ! 30th's are not really land mark birthday party's after all.

Sorry for not getting back, busy on Sunday with disco work and on the day job on Monday !

When I arrived I met the caterers who told me the girlfriend of the guy wasn't happy as he had been out on the ale watching the football all afternoon, good start !!!

Around 100 turned up, place was a dingy social club (which I don't mind, you are always able to use haze in these places). I was getting a lot of strange looks till I first spoke on the microphone, I had a little light joke with them about the playlist being all the guys work, people came up to me a couple of times when I left the stage saying they would be squaring it with the guy to have some 'party' music played, which I had a laugh and joke with them about. Then around 10pm came the magic moment where the guy came up and asked if I could ditch 'that' playlist and play tunes that were more party like. I explained that I could still play tunes from the list but in better order and between other songs that people would dance to enjoy. Also I knew that there were a lot of KH people there as this was explained to me (KH is the Krazy House in Liverpool, a massive rock club that people go to religiously), I said I can still do all the rock stuff but I would fit it in a better way.

Anyway the 'metal' section worked well, even with people who didn't like that music getting involved for a laugh. To be honest, i filled the dance floor with the first song that I played that was no/t playlisted (yes, still Journey going down a storm here), then the dancefloor stayed steady till midnight. Then I got the usual 'more' chants, I couldn't do anymore I told them as I had been told 12 finish, to which then the birthday boy said he would pay me if the boss said it was ok, but I said I will but only if the boss tells me himself. He did, I wasn't getting picked up till 1.45ish as the roadie carries myself and 3 bands around and it was one of them nights were we were spread out, so i was looking for an excuse to carry on.

The 5 minute gap in music spurred them all on, the dance floor was rammed till 1.55am when I got the roadies text that he was outside. Ended up great, got £30 off the guy whos party it was for the extra hour and £40 quid of the boss for the extra hour after that because he made a fortune over the bar. He must have said 'I wish they were all like that for me' about 5 or 6 times. I said it's always the ones you least expect ! To be honest though I never saw the money flying over the bar but I'm glad it had for him as he was a nice guy.

Finally Steve Corabar, why does this thread do me no favours ? I like to give everybody at a party a really top party, they all spend money coming out, I know what works even with mixed crowds, I read crowds as I go, with that playlist I knew it would be a dead end party even before I saw one person (as I'm sure you would know). No matter what, I still do my 110% best for everyone. As for my attitude stinking, I think it would stink a lot more for me not to do anything about it and let the party, the celebration and everything else suffer.

This weeks gigs include a 40th, totally the opposite of this list. A good few suggested songs from several people that are attending and a bit of guidance as to what the they all like, I can't wait to do it. A lot of real proper 80's early on such as Nik Kershaw and Kajagoogoo amongst others has been asked for, not the greatest floorfillers early on but at least the fun factor is there from the start

I can't imagine finishing a gig with no transport for 90 minutes - especially in your neck of the woods - no offense intended Alan.
Glad it turned out well for you, and extra money into the bargain - I wonder what odds we'd have got on that at 7pm on Saturday!

Glad it went well, it's what usually happens with these playlists once they realise it's not working, luckily a decent DJ can turn it around and make it a success :)

If that's what he meant then I apologise !!! The caterer said to me that 30 is not usually a celebrated birthday in a big way without me mentioning it which was ironic hehe !!! As for the fixed playlist, I don't mind guides, just not the whole thing. We are the DJ's, it's our job to know what works. It's also our job to know that if what we are doing isn't working then to change it so that it does work. I (as I'm sure you all did) looked at that list and knew it wouldn't work. There were many parts of it that would if they were moved around, but sadly you can't make a party great if you are playing Shine On You Crazy Diamond or the likes when people want to dance and have fun !! It's a great song as is a lot of the Floyd stuff, but there's a time. The playlist has Valerie very early on, as much as it's boring me to play it these days after so much playing, it still works at getting a dance floor moving with the girls, that needed to be later if anything.

Well, badmouthing a client on a forum that is viewable by the general public (if you have enough posts, they'll start showing up against your name (Disco Tech Liverpool) on Google etc...) & your refusal to spend 99p to get a track that was requested way in advance of the gig & is readily available on virtually any download site I can think of.

Anyone who falls on this thread will see the original playlist and know that they are getting a DJ who knows what he is talking about when it comes to making a party, a party. I've shown that playlist to dozens of people with not one positive response. I couldn't download the track for 99p if I stuck rigidly to the playlist could I as it wasn't even titled correctly, also. I could have spent several 99p downloading the obscure tracks that I didn't have, the agent is a decent fella and virtually begged me to take the gig on, he had offered it to a DJ who wasn't comfortable with it and wanted me to swap with the 40th he had given me, and also the agent had only taken the gig on after the girl had been let down by the original disco that she booked because they cancelled on her, I can't think why ? The girl must have called the agent everyday as she was panicking that she would get let down again. What would you have done Steve ?

:agree: I think the main point is, it doen't matter if it's a 90th, Christening, theme night they are your customer and you do your best for them without prejudice and think would you want them to read what you put on this thread?

Ive got a wedding this Saturday and my playlist is growing by the day and she wants her daughter to sing too.
No problem, she is the customer and it's one of the most important days of someone's life.
My personal reason for doing this job is that I love seeing people have a good time and being happy (money is a bonus).

I played what the customer wanted, but as I DJ for a job, I actually do know what makes a party tick (as I'm sure you do, you are experienced too), I have no probs playing ANY songs, but as a full night when it's clearly going to bomb I would rather speak to the customer and offer advice, they were unwilling to listen (to me and obviously other DJ's before me) which is fine. In the end, like I said - I was asked to do the right thing by the party, so I can't have been wrong for raising the subject of the list for the entire evening can I.

Obscure tunes for a party unless you want to just play for the customer all night long, I like to please everybody, however - they all got played. However System Of A Down was not so obscure for me to play as I was told there would be a good crowd of metal heads there, that sat in quite happily with other metal songs I segwayed in. (and SoaD's best song is still Sugar IMO).

At the end of the day, the customer, and the whole party had a ball. Yes the party was bland for a couple of hours, yes I didn't play the whole playlist, probably played 70% of the list, but everyone had a great time. As much as you have to respect the customer, I would rather the customer had everybody say to him that the party was fantastic and he got a lot of what he wanted into the bargain, than everyone leaving early and having a crap time and saying this guys party was woeful. I'm sorry I'm not as good as Steve, if people give me dodgy playlists next time then I will either run them by you or pass your number to them.

Nobody turned up at the party till 7.40ish after all, If I had have had the song then it would have been academic as only I would have heard it, it was 2nd on the list !!!!

Also I did mention that I wouldn't have EVERY single song on the list, the customer said you could just get them off limewire haha. I told them it was not an option to which she said, as long as you've got most of them !!

FYI, I'm pretty sure I haven't stated that I know better. I did offer you advice on any similar playlists as I do know a fair bit about the more rock / indie / alternative side of things (& that offer still stands), but if you have sufficient knowledge on that, then feel free to ignore it.
