If you're going to put through spoof event requests through my website, please at least make if obvious you are from MDD.
I don't hide prices, and you'll still get the same result from the quote request, but it will save me doing the follow-up admin if I don't twig it in time.

Daft thing is, if they'd asked, I would have just told them - go ahead & have a play with it if you want to see it - just put your name in so that I don't put you in to the admin system and start sending you emails!

Perhaps I’m opening a can of worms but here goes...
Yes, I read this thread on the bus Angela and couldn’t stop laughing and smiling. People on the bus must have thought I was mad!
Hi MDD, I’m Lisa and have been for a good 12 months! I knew somebody would catch me out eventually. Lisa has spoke to companies (not just discos) all over the UK which gave me the idea for my Posh Party site.
Lisa hasn’t been out for ages but she wanted to try your new automated booking system (which I thought was very good). It had nothing to do with how much you charge! (Obviously that still isn’t a good excuse)
I apologise to all the members who had to deal with Lisa. The intention wasn’t to steal ideas or prices etc but to observe how you dealt with people. How quick did you reply? Did you catch up with Lisa when she didn’t reply?
It was Bands and other entertainers etc who were really interesting. One comedian even inserted a few jokes into his quote.
I was very surprised at the amount of people that didn’t even bother replying.
I keep getting myself into trouble but you gotta see the funny side?* It had to be me. :o

There is a couple of people i know local to me who do this. do not see the point really?
The price is what you think your worth - in my opinion unless your checking email back time rates.
I would find it pretty irritating if my prices were not on the site.
I have had people call me and ask and be honest and we have spent hours on the phone sharing ideas.
Thats surely much more useful?
I have just come back from a meeting with someone who is kind of mimicking me and
we had a great time talking about speakers and what not.

I think Mr Brown may have got this particular practise from me. I regularly email people to see how quickly they answer, what kind of service they provide and the sort of prices they go out for.
It's called market research and is very useful for finding out about people, especially when people have a lot to say on here...:sj:

Personally I cannot stand it when DJs use such methods....and I know many of you do. I just wish they would pick up the phone and have a good chat with me about things and we can exchange ideas and talk shop, it could be a beneficial networking exercise for all parties if they weren't so deceitful. I know many won't agree (mainly those that prefer the underhanded...sorry I meant market research method :p) but I think it's completely dishonest, shady and a waste of my time if they contact me pretending to be someone they're not. Each to their own I suppose.
I used to pass on a fair bit of work to a local DJ, till he called me up trying to disguise his voice. I played along gave him my price. I've never given him work since. The fool also called from his own number so it came up his business name on my caller I.D. :muppet:
Doing this kind of 'market research' on me is a good way to lose potential work and friendship from me if I ever found out.

I don't always spot the 'spoofs', obviously, but when I do, it depends on what mood I'm in as to what I'll do with them.
If I'm not too busy I'll just carry on regardless and deal as a normal enquiry. When I'm busy, I have been known to just completely ignore them.
Today I'm tired and unfocused, and could do without the 'extras' the day after coming back from BPM.... plus it leapt off the page at me as a spoof.
It's not a practice that I subscribe to, but accept that it's a fact of life.

I respect your opinion Shaun, but it is not deceitful at all.
Ever heard of secret shoppers? Watch the world's top chef in action trying to find a the UK's best restaurant. He sends in secret diners. A lot of companies do it so they can improve their practises and see how staff should have dealt with the client etc.
I regularly speak with local companies and DJs to exchange views and network, but you aren't going to find out the real person and the way you do business unless they think you are a client.
It's not so much about the money and charges, more about how they do business and how I can improve mine.

I know it goes on, Daz. I just don't agree with it. I just prefer to concentrate on my own business and don't worry about how others run theirs, so contacting others to see how they deal with clients is not something I've even considered.
I remember this topic was covered a while back, and since then I started doing IP checks on 'suspect' IP's. There's been one or two from out the area that I suspected might be someone that knows me online. I've even run their IP's through the forum IP checker (well, there's gotta be some advantages to working here ;)). Angela, try that next time and you'll soon find out who it is. :d

Even if I did sort of agree with what you are saying, surely if what you are doing is seeing if there is anything you can do to improve your own business then having them exaggerate is likely to give you the 'ideas' you are looking for which you can adapt to your own business?
How does having an enquiry unanswered help you in any way?

I'm no psychologist but I tend to take what people tell me at face value, more-so when I'm talking with friends. I wouldn't get very far in life if I were to go about lying to people or thinking that they're lying to me. Sure there are dishonest people, but for the most part I tend to believe that most people are genuine.

I've never understood why any business would have a problem with people mystery shopping them unless they have something to hide.
As previously mentioned, mystery shopping goes on all over the place, and I agree with it 100%.
It's all very well businesses asking people to contact them directly, say who they are & ask what they want to know, but how does the enquirer know whether the business is telling them the actual truth or just saying what they think the enquirer wants/needs to hear?
In reality, the only way to discover how a business replies to enquiries, how quickly they reply & what quotes they give is to pose as an enquirer yourself.
Corabar Entertainment
05-10-2010, 11:19 PM
But if, as has been suggested, what people want to know is 'how?', rather than 'how much?', then surely asking directly gives all the information they want? - ie: what additional benefit is there in actually receiving a 'live' reply via a spoof request, over a copy of the email template provided if someone asked directly, and of what possible benefit is it to you to know that xyz discos replies in 5 hours when they told you they replied within 2?
Shaun
05-10-2010, 11:30 PM
In reality, the only way to discover how a business replies to enquiries, how quickly they reply & what quotes they give is to pose as an enquirer yourself.
Personally, I don't need to know how other businesses reply, how quickly they reply, or how much they quote? All of which have no bearing or relevence on the way I operate or how I run my business. All I need to know is how I'm going to reply to potential clients, I really have no inclination to know what others do. I've managed pretty well up to this point concentrating solely on my own business. I couldn't tell you what any other local DJ in my area charges (with the exception of Gary from Soundmasters, as we've discussed pricing and other business aspects during our many chats).
I've never understood why any business would have a problem with people mystery shopping them unless they have something to hide.
To insinuate that some people might have something to hide because they disagree with the methods being discussed is kind of insulting. Hey-ho, you're entitled to your opinion like the rest of us. I think the main thing that would annoy me is that I'm wasting my time drafting up a reply, and then the subsequent follow up email. Things are bad enough when we get the run-a-round from real potential clients so it's that extra bit enfuriating when it's another DJ. Surely you can see and understand that point of view even though you disagree with it?
If people need to do this kind of market research/secret shopper method to make their business run better then fair enough, I just don't agree with it and don't have the need to do it for my business. As as I said earlier, each to their own.

Then by default you have to admit that the methods you've used could be annoying or upsetting to those you've contacted?
This is why I personally could never contemplate attemting to contact people by such methods. I'd think to myself - If there's a chance I could upset anyone I'd rather just not take the step in the first place. It's just the way I am.

Only if the business decides it is happy to answer their question.
what additional benefit is there in actually receiving a 'live' reply via a spoof request, over a copy of the email template provided if someone asked directly
The benefit is that you would find out the actual reply they give to enquirers, whereas if you say who you are & ask for their email template, they may decide not to give it to you.
I recall a couple of threads where people asked about how to reply to email enquiries & what information to include. I was one of a very few people to post up my actual email template reply, but for some reason only a handful of people chose to do this.
Therefore, in some situations, it's clear that you will get more information and more accurate information by posing as a potential customer than by being up front about who you are & what you want to know.
Charlie Brown
05-10-2010, 11:44 PM
...and what benefit have you received?
Quite a bit...As I said, Dj's didn't give a lot away but here were my findings in that sector:
The obvious people (from the forum) replied quickly and efficiently as I expected. There was one member, who is very respected on here, didn't reply at all.
The local competition, (bar two) was very poor. Some took up to three days to reply and weren't very informative. One lady said "If you want to book, it's a £20 deposit" & ignored my questions completely.
One bloke told me how other Dj's will harp on about PLI, PAT etc and that in reality it's completely irrelevant.
Only 3 people (out of 25?) bothered to catch up with Lisa.
I also gave Good Party a whirl and I didn't receive one reply from that! I reckon that's being wasted. It was at a nice hotel in Nottingham with a £250-500 budget.
It was interesting how Rob handled Lisa's partner to be. I thought that was really good.
Locally overall: Pretty dire. Derby performed a lot better than Nottingham.
On the forum: Exceptional, in terms of speed, informative etc. Bar one who didn't reply.

On hindsight, I couldn't agree more. I knew it would be spotted when I was typing it out a minute ago.
It could be seen as a positive as nobody replied!

Nobody included any pictures (which I do) and nobody included a good testimonial which I also do.

When did I say they weren't?
I don't think it matters on location. Somebody in Wales could be over loaded with work yet somebody in York could have none!
What's the person in Wales doing right?
Is it how they deal with potential clients? Perhaps it's by recommendations?
These are the aspects I was trying to eliminate and establish. I've questioned whether the picture on my website is turning down a lot of work etc.
Which is really completely irrelevant, isn't it?
In some ways yes and in others no. Now I know Dj's in Nottingham & Derby don't really bother with Good Party, I don't mind throwing some more money at it and taking the time to buy and distribute quotes. I got the impression clients were being flooded with requests from Dj's - doesn't seem to be the case.

He's also been very kind because as he damn well knows - he's been a victim of Lisa! Rob's probably been the worst effected because "Mark", Lisa's husband to be was an ex-technician and started quizzing Rob on the importance of DMX'ing.
Rob, I apologise.
Thanks Charlie, but there's no need to apologise!
I have no problem with people asking about my business, whether they are up front about it or whether they do it posing as a customer.
I'm proud of my business & how I run it, and have nothing to hide, and no problem with mystery shoppers.
I'm apologising because Rob & Paul are two of my favourite members. I often have chats with Paul outside the forum and send Rob the occasional "How are you" PM. I don't want them narked off at me for wasting their time.
Charlie, for the record, you're probably one of the LAST people on this forum who could get me narked off!
It was interesting how Rob handled Lisa's partner to be. I thought that was really good.
Thanks Charlie...that's good to hear.
I remember the enquiry well, but can't recall exactly how I replied, as it was a little while ago now.
I still don't see how that benefits you
Because if I know how other businesses reply to enquiries, I can compare that to my own replies, and might discover others are mentioning things that could be important which I'm not including in my own replies. I could therefore use this information to improve my own reply template which could lead to a better take up rate.

I've never understood why any business would have a problem with people mystery shopping them unless they have something to hide.
To insinuate that some people might have something to hide because they disagree with the methods being discussed is kind of insulting.
I'm not insinuating that at all, Shaun.
I'm saying that I DON'T UNDERSTAND why a business would have a problem with people mystery shopping them unless they have something to hide.
I can indeed understand that point of view, Shaun.
However, if you have a template for replies to email enquiries, it shouldn't take long to hit reply, cut & paste the template as your response, add their name, the function date, the quote amount & then hit the send button.
The follow up email would presumably be another template, so this should be just as quick to process.
Unlike you, I get very flattered if I discover that people think my business is worth mystery shopping!
Also, as a direct result of this practice (thanks Darren!), I've been able to go from a very poor 1-2 sentence enquiry reply to a proper reply template which is much more professional & gives far more additional information which sells my business better than ever before.

I try to juggle running a business whilst raising my 15 month old daughter now that my better half has gone back to work full time. Add on top of that the running of the forum, my design commitments, everything else I have going on, plus trying to have a life on top of that - any time wasted on fake enquiries is time I don't wish to give, no matter how little that time may be. I left this thread last night at about 12.30 as I was a little "miffed" to say the least and have a nice little sleep but after reading it again this morning I am still "miffed"
If people need to do this kind of market research/secret shopper method to make their business run better then fair enough, I just don't agree with it and don't have the need to do it for my business. As as I said earlier, each to their own.
100% :agree:
If you see nothing wrong with the methods you've used why are you apologising?
Indeed as many of us have said....Just ask as you have done in the past.

The farming of other peoples templates.....which he could have had if he'd asked and there would be no bad feeling towards you from some forum members

I have got to say I agree with Shaun here, since joining this forum I have learnt there are so many people willing to share information and ideas that there is no need to lie about who you are. If anyone contacted me directly and asked how much I would charge for a certain gig, I would be more than happy to talk about my fees and talk shop. I was lucky that when I went from doing clubs and bars to the mobile work, I was getting married so I got quite a few quotes for a DJ for our wedding (There were some wild variations in pricing but you could easily see why the cheapest quotes would end in misery).
The things that set us all apart are the way in which we deal with clients, how we perform and the quailty of equipment that we put out. My business reputation is built on my skillset, experience and the quality of service that I provide so what my compeititors charge is pretty irrelavent in that respect. If someone comes back to me asking why I am more expensive than another company, I just explain what I offer and leave it up to them. You will know if you are too expensive for you area if you don't manage to convert enquiries into bookings, I know this as I went through a spell of getting very little work. I think I have nailed it now as I am currently sitting at about an 80% success rate for conversions for this year.

How is it wasting peoples time & money?
Regardless of whether you ask someone for a quote in the guise of a customer OR if you contact them as yourself & openly ask what they charge...they still have to spend time answering, so what's the difference?
99% of the membership will gladly offer the information anyway if you had just asked.
Sorry, but I don't think that's the case.
For example, I once openly asked a member (with no prices on their website) what they charged, and they didn't give me an answer!
If I sent a PM to 20 or 30 people asking what they charged so that I could compare my prices to other mobile discos around the country, I doubt very much whether I'd get an answer from anywhere near the 99% you suggest...and that's why some people feel the need to pose as a potential customer to get information.
Thinking about it, I'm very tempted to try the PM exercise so I can find out whether my suspicions about the response rate are correct. Maybe I will!

Rob, you are missing the point. I don't think you get it at all.
I've done it myself when checking out the local competitors and it IS wasting their time. I hold my hands up to that totally but (probably like Charlie), I was doing a bit of market research. To do it to people who you call 'friends' on a forum that you frequent regularly is out of order in my opinion. I like Charlie and I like the way he does what he does (generally) as he looks focused etc but I think he has had a mad minute. I would not do it to people on this forum no matter what.

If I sent a PM to 20 or 30 people asking what they charged so that I could compare my prices to other mobile discos around the country
Different DJs work in different markets and offer different levels of service, have differing levels of experience and a whole load of other factors that come into play when offering a quote. So I'm not sure what such an exercise would achieve if I'm honest. I base my prices on a lot of factors that are relevant to my business model, my running costs, how much profit I like to make etc, so my pricing is a reflection on that. What other DJs charge around the country (or indeed in my own locality) has no bearing on what I charge, and I can't think of any reason why I personally would need to know what others charge anywhere in the country...other than being a nosey :Censored:. Fair enough I could understand why DJs would like to have an idea of what others charge in the same area, but would I need to know what a DJ in Wales/London/Birmingham [ delete as applicable] charge? Short sharp answer is no.
I've openly talked shop and prices with DJs privately. Would I reply to such a query via PM? To be completely honest it would depend on the member really. If it were someone I liked and respected, and felt they didn't have any potential ulterior motives then I'd happily talk shop with them and divulge details of my business that could be beneficial to them. Although I'd ask them to give me a call instead of PM'ing. It's always nice to chat in person with someone.
It's the same openly on the forum (and in real life for that matter). We pick and choose our conversations and who to give our time to and who to give help to, especially when free time is limited. If I have time and can help, and like the person I can be very giving and generous. Going back to the kind of 'market research' we're talking about. If people want to use that approach then just carry on. That kind of practise isn't for me. Each to their own.

So if I openly sent a PM to 20 or 30 members asking what they charged so I could compare my prices to other discos, do you agree with Wayno that 99% of them would answer my question?
For the record, when I first went full time, I made enquiries to half a dozen local discos for market research.
However, I've never pretended to be a potential customer & made an enquiry to anyone on this forum, but if I DID, I certainly wouldn't use my own computer as the IP could be traced & I could be identified. I'd go to a friend's house & use their computer, because if people sus you're not a genuine enquirer, it defeats the whole object.
Different DJs work in different markets and offer different levels of service, have differing levels of experience and a whole load of other factors that come into play when offering a quote. So I'm not sure what such an exercise would achieve if I'm honest.
Well, let's say you knew of someone in your area who also did weddings, but had a lot less experience than you, didn't issue contracts, carried no back up equipment, didn't take requests & sometimes turned up late.
If you enquired discovered they were charging the same as you, that would suggest that maybe you were undercharging for your own services, so to answer your question, what it would achieve is a more realistic (ie higher) price than you'd previously been charging.
P.S. Sorry Shaun, but since changing you're avatar, I just haven't been able to take you seriously!

Firstly, I wouldn't enquire in the first place. I'd give the gig to a DJ I personally know would give a good service. But hypothetically speaking I know I wouldn't be under-charging as I'm currently happy with my pricing for the service I provide. But it would suggest the other DJ was over-charging, but I wouldn't be able say for complete certainty as I wouldn't be privilege to all the facts on how he runs his business and how he came to the conclusion on his pricing. Again, there's not a lot I can do about how the other guy operates, other than carrying on concentrating on my own service and delivering the best service I can.

Charlie Brown:
Here's my current prices / work (which, after being made redundant, I lowered). You only had to ask. I didn't expect being quite so busy in October so I've probably under achieved in terms of income and need another review but .. hey ho, what can you do. It's much quicker to post it on here rather than deal with some clown posing as a customer.
Last weekend for me:
Fri: Wedding (new venue discount) £135 (using the full set up you see on my website)
Sat afternoon: 2hr Kids party, regular venue £95.00 (minimal set up)
Sat night: Karaoke disco £130.00 local pub as a favour (minimal set up)
Sunday afternoon: 2 hr kids party, regular venue, £95.00 (minimal set up)
Sunday night: Wedding £160.00 price matched (using the full set up you see on my website)
Total:£605.00. Probably some of you make this much in one event.
What I charge is reasonable for the capital outlay and for the effort. I'm at the top end of the charging scale in these parts. Pro rata, what I do still equates to about £40,000 per year gross and assuming the same rate of bookings, no roadies, no helpers to pay, it's plenty to be generated by just me, enjoying hard work whilst offering the best deal around. Anymore would be greedy and I would be robbing my valued customers, many of whom have become friends. New bookings already generated from the weekend above - approx 5. More will follow judging by feedback.
Other DJ's working on the same weekend:
Sat: Karaoke leading to a residency
Sun: Disco
You can email through our website. You can ring for prices. If I don't like what you are offering in terms of function and venue, I'll politely tell you so and decline to offer services. That way, I always get to work with the nicest of people. As far as customer services goes, I try to get back to people quickly but it is not always possible. I'd have told you this. Just ask.
If I like the sound of a job on offer and it might lead to additional work, I'll try to offer similar prices to competitors. We offer a like for like price match. My prices will, however, vary from month to month depending on demand or how much I want a job. At the moment, for full disco's, my prices for November are low becuase it is a slow month. Come Christmas it's a different story.
There now. All is laid out before you and I didn't need to be conned into giving out information by some fool posing as a customer. Finally, might I offer you a word of warning for the future. Taking into account my workload, I would never have time to bother other DJ's with trivia and deceit. If I found out I was being messed around by another DJ pretending to do "market research", I'd not be too happy. Infact, I would react very badly.

Personally I don't think this is a 'secret shopper' case. Secret shoppers are sent in to, or check on establishments by their senior management to monitor and test procedures, customer service and all aspects of the business. They then report back to head office with their findings. This is then fed back to the outlet that was checked/visited with a pat on the back and/or areas highlighted that need looking at.
All I'm saying is had Angela not mentioned it, Charlie wouldn't have, so nothing would ever have come of it, therefore no benefit to Corabar Entertainments. So in my view, a waste of somebody's time. http://planetsmilies.net/eat-drink-smiley-5155.gif

Unbelievably enough, so am I. Makes it hard when you give 'em a figure, and hear a stunned silence. :( :( :(
.
. Infact, I would react very badly.
Which would mean what exactly?
:pram: :D :D :D :D
OK folks, here's my input. I've been mystery shopped by someone on here, and actually I spotted it. I'd have had to have been blind, senile and drunk not to, no matter what the shopper thought. :D :D
I gave an honest and sensible answer, because I afforded them the courtesy of treating them like any other customer. Then I sent them a Raspberry, by PM. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I have no problems being mystery shopped, especially by people on here. Usually there's a valid reason for it, so fair enough.
As to the point about openness, Rob for one is indeed a very honest, helpful, and beneficial person to call in these matters. Penfold is another. However, a point I'd like to make is that I have not normally called other DJ's and asked " How much do you charge? ". It has more been for pointers on procedure, and the like.

No not my street, although the other DJ on my road moved away about 2 years ago so you're technically correct.
I'm assuming the Isle of Wight is your home? If so, you live on an island with a populaton of 126,000 quite well off people. It has an area of about 146 sq miles. I live in South Yorkshire which has an area of 600 sq miles and population of over 1.3 million people. We border closely onto other urban areas meaning that the over 2 million people area within reach. That is a lot of potential customers but also a lot of potential competition. If you then look at the index of deprivation for your area and mine, you'll see just how lucky you are. Try coming to South Yorkshire and charging much more than we do (£130-£160 on average) and just watch the work ebb away.
I take pride in offering best value for money. Don't knock it.

I'm not going to get into the "patch" comparison stuff because I've done that to death already on other topics.
My comparison was not with my own business but with the hundreds of discos I help arrange UK-wide every month. I have my finger on quite a big pulse, and I know that there's plenty of work out there - even relatively straightforward jobs - for lots more than your rack rates.
Anyway, I don't want to :hijack: this thread any longer, so :zip:

Just had a thought...!
I purchased an enquiry on GoodParty on 25th May 2010.
The Name: Lisa Clarke
Event: 40th Birthday Party
Date: Friday 11th November 2011 (Enquiry on GoodParty said Friday 13th November 2011!)
Venue: Crowne Plaza Hotel, Nottingham
I was a bit dubious, as to why someone would book a disco for a 40th 19 months in advance, but as it came via GoodParty, thought it would be legit.
I was asked if I would reduce my price by £45 after I had already offered a £50 discount for a promotion I had going at the time! - I said "No."
Was this you Charlie?...If so, you cost me £3.00...as well as time spent answering the enquiry and replying to the responses.

I also gave Good Party a whirl and I didn't receive one reply from that! I reckon that's being wasted. It was at a nice hotel in Nottingham with a £250-500 budget.

I have to say I think you've behaved pretty badly in doing this, particularly to friends and colleagues on here, most of which would probably just have given you the information you were after if you'd asked. I replied to Angela's post #125 and said I didn't realise that the two instances were brought to light originally, I was only aware that there was the one on her site talked about. Had the second one, on Good Party have been mentioned then I must have missed it, so I apologised.
that is my fault, I posted the quote from charlie , I read scotts post and remembered charlie saying it (I actually remembered the critism he got at the time for using goodparty) it was early in the thread(page 5 or 6 i think but cant be bothered to look again)
I'm not posting in this thread anymore.
For the record:
I haven't sent any 'fake' emails out since the last time we had a discussion on here. Also, I won't be sending any fake emails out again so please don't accuse me next time something like this crops up again. I fully accept why people would.
Mum always told me about the boy who cried wolf.
i actually believe you charlie my first thoughts were it's too silly a name for anyone doing a bit of research to use (even you:p ), but then you owned up to it and i thought, i,m wrong again. BUT now you are denying it, i believe you are telling the truth:) your still a :muppet: though:) :) :beer1:

Do you want to own up to it, Tom?

....but you're now sending out fake texts. Wasting peoples time is the same no matter which method you do it. I fear all you're doing is making people who classed you as a friend lost complete respect for you. I'm actually gobsmacked that you're now sending texts to waste people's time.
I'm not sending texts!
I didn't send any texts.
I admitted to it in such a sarcastic cheeky way that I thought people would KNOW I didn't send it.
Checking how fast someone texts back is no use to me whatsoever. I thought people would suss that.
I've dug myself (unnecessarily) into a hole. :o
And, I do apologise (seriously) for wasting peoples time. The thread didn't need to be merged.
Does any of that make sense?
When Darren said he had a fake text and Steve said it was me...I thought I'd go along with it.

Sorry Charlie but I give up with you mate.
Why is it (and this is no disrespect to Darren at all), that you only listen and take on board what Darren says yet the rest of us who comment, well they seem to go in one ear and out of the other.
I have seen Darren take you down a peg or two on here a number of times and it's almost as if you listen, take note and then carry on doing the same thing. A bit like someone being punched in the face repeatedly but they still have a cheesy grin on their face....(bit of a weird comparison but I know what I mean).
You asked for this thread to be closed, it hasn't been so why not, rather than trying to get the last word in all the time....just not comment?
