Bargain SM58 Microphone Grill

Hi folks,

I've just found the following listing (from a company with 99.5% positive feedback) for replacement grills for SM58 type microphones at just £2.78 each...with free postage from Hong Kong!

Obviously they're not Shure originals, but at that price (and having checked the description) I don't see how you can go wrong.

Just ordered one for myself.

Fine if you do not want keep the features of the SM58. The grill effect the polar patten of the pickup so unless identical could cause more problems with feedback. Originals last for years so I would not consider it worth saving a couple of pounds on an item that i may buy 1 every 10 years

I've used a couple of cheap grills from ebay before (although not this cheap!), and have never had any problems.

To be honest, I've noticed no difference in the look, durability or performance whatsoever!

P.S. The saving is more than a couple of pounds, and I certainly get through more than 1 every 10 years.

I purchased some proper ones the other day.
They might be cheap Rob but in my opinion, it's like putting furry dice in a supercar. I would rather have the real thing than a cheap copy.

Fair enough, Gary, but like I said, I've noticed no difference, so IMHO spending a fair bit more on original ones seems like a waste of money.

That's more true than you think, Steve...as I always have my mouth touching the grill, so it gets a fair bit of saliva on it, and I use it 4 or 5 nights a week, hence why it gets gunky after a while.

The problem is the foam layer stuck to the inside of the grill to reduce breath pops.

If it wasn't for that, I could just unscrew the grill & give it a good scrub in the sink.

Water is the natural enemy of Shure grilles.
A while back one of mine got slightly, and I mean slightly, sprayed while hosting outdoor duck-racing. Within two days it had discoloured :o

It got a few drops when the net used to recover the plastic ducks was shaken about 6 feet away. Wiped it, removed it, and shook it and returned to case. 2 days later it had gone brown in three or four places. :eek:
