Speaker Magnets

Well did a 18th birthday last night which in one way was fantastic busy busy busy BUT at about 11:30pm i saw out the corner of my eye a tall girl going towards the speaker stand but by the time i turned round the speaker and tripod had fell over :( luckily enough it didnt land on anyone and the girl just looked to say "Oh its fell over" and carried on stumbleing towards the toilets.

So when i picked it up the sound had gone off and i noticed a rattleing in the box :eek:

So anyway carried on with one peavey st15 going strong :)

Got home and opened the cab up to see the magent had come off the back, now the speaker is still 100% in tact so my question is, Can the magnet be fixed back on OR is it a case of i need to replace the whole speaker (minus cab of cause)

unless the driver is designed to have a removable magnet ( like a peavey black widow driver for instance) then you will be needing a new driver im afraid. The force required to remove the magnet is quite considerable, so as well a the driver magnet coming away, it is highly likely that the basket has ben deformed to some extent, meaning that a repair will be impossible.

So, new driver.

You will also ned to check for damage to in particular the horn of the hf driver and the crossover pcb - it is also common for the heavier crossover components to come adrift under conditions like this.

The magnets on many speakers are glued on. I have had a magnet just move and jam the coil. I then took it to www.audioloudspeakers.co.uk where the magnet was removed and the refitted aligning it with the coil which was not damaged. This speaker co is in Gt. Yarmouth 22 miles up the road from me but they have so much work on you would have to say please to have a quick turnaround. Check the website and call the boss, Paul.

Peavey are only based 30 miles from you in corby. It may be worth taking down to them they may be able to fix it for you. Mind you the st drivers are not to expensive anyway so it shouldn't be to bad to fix.

i think we have to remember that this is a budget driver, and repaired driver is never going to be as good as a new one - unless the repair is costing more than the replacement....which could be the case in this example.

Audio loudspeakers in yarmouth are great. Very useful for repairing obsolete drive units.

If the damaged river had been a beyma / PD / 18-sound etc, then fair enough, a quote for repair would be worthwhile, but in this case, i fear not

Well quick little update,

Ive managed to rebuild the magnet and horn bit but unfortunatly im not getting no bass through it at all and it sounds all tinny so im guessing its time to get a NEW pair of speakers and just buy a new driver for the peavey and keep them as backup. :(

Yes before anyone mentions it i should have backup speakers

Will write my lines "MUST GET BACKUP SPEAKERS AGAIN" out tonight on paper 100 times :P

Ring Peavey on Monday morning 01536 461234 they are very helpful, might immediately post/carrier you a speaker, I got a replacement horn driver next day---I didnt need it--during my "accident" the impact to my speaker cabinet simply broke a soldered joint.

Looks like its a good time to buy some replacements from Stagebeat;)
