I dont think doubleing your price is something i would do but i have just quoted for a gig this Saturday were they wanted ME as they have past experiance of me so i have added a little extra :sofa:

I've had situations before where they have seen me, want me, have had a recommendation from the venue, and still booked someone else to save £25!!!

No, I would still quote them the same price.

Only last month, I did a party for someone who booked me last year, but when had they contacted me to do this year's party, I was booked on the date...so they changed the date of the party just so they could book me :D

No need for the sofa - exactly what I was getting at -you don't actually know HOW much they want you, so by hiking the price, you could end up not getting the gig.

Ok, cheers for the comments.
I was asking simply because I wanted to see what people thought and if I was on the same wavelength as some of you.

It's not an ego thing but I also get asked a lot as I do a lot of stuff locally and people like what I do so want to book me to do the same thing at their function (Indie/Alternative etc).

I was talking to someone online yesterday that I hadn't seen for a while and we got on to this subject. He said that if people wanted him personally, he would add on extra. I didn't really agree as I think that if I am doing something with a genre that I enjoy and there will be people there that I will know and there is not as much pressure on me, why should I charge more?

A good business survives on recommendations! (I would say that around 80-90% of our business this year has been either repeat or recommendation)

If you up your price for every recommendation, you might as well just put your prices up over all, IMO

...either that, or he just doesn't get many recommendations! :lol:

Its bang out of order and the more I think about it the more annoyed I am with people who do this. Not often I get like that on here either.

if you called a builder and he/she added on more because they were recommended you would feel a bit miffed.

I sometimes actually discount a little at times as I already know client, the crowd, and venue and know it will be an excellent night.
Having said that my average price is £400 :p

Hyperthetical question really BUT....

If you received a phonecall from someone and they said that YOU had been recommended to them or that they had seen you do your thing before and wanted to book YOU.....would you up your price?

Would you charge that little extra because they want YOU for their function?

I'm not talking silly amounts (for example: If you normally charged £200.00, would you up that to £400?).

Customers aren't silly and won't pay well over the odds but they will pay that little extra to get what and who they want.

If your that good--a little bit extra doesnt apply--its much more!!!

Why? Because your worth it;)

The odd ones recognise the reality and will pay a substantial premium to get YOU

PROVIDING YOU CAN JUSTIFY IT--thats another completely different subject.

Remember if your getting a lot of calls its pointless taking a job at a little extra when theres several other customers delighted to pay a lot more coming along soon.

I just quoted a job for next year at top dollar--I dont care because someone else will take the date nearer the time at the same price.

Possibly because you offer other DJS it gets complicated:confused:

Nope my prices are set. But it does make me feel good to be recomended. I did once have a bride change her wedding day just to have me Dj for her. That was an ego boost.

I have never even thought of upping my prices so therefore, no , I wouldnt up them just because they wanted me.
Had an instance crop up like that for me last week. I received a call from a lady who attended a 40th birthday i dj'd at. She got my number from the birthday boy at work and phoned and explained she was a guest at the party and would particularly like me to do her party at the end of the month. That in itself to me is a big enough ego boost , to receive praise and get another booking from a guest.
Maybe i'm just easily pleased :o but I'd never consider upping my price unless there were 3 flights of stairs and the lift was broke! but thats a different ball park! :whistle:

Neither do I. I charge based on what they want and if it is the same then I charge the same plus a bit more if I have increased my prices in the interim.

All my work is word of mouth anyhow so it would be wrong to do so really.

This happens quite often. I also do not do (13ths-15ths) teenage parties on a Saturday (because i can earn better money / have a social life) so they quite often move to a Friday to get me.

I can sort of understand charging a premium if you own the company and have several DJ's working for you (bit like a hairdressers charging more for their top stylists). But not upping your price on an ad hoc basis just because you think you can get away with it. If you feel you can get away with chargingmore then it's probably time to adjust your prices across the board for everyone.

You get another call for the same date and that customers insists that they want you and will pay you slightly more to get you to do their function. You haven't charged extra but they have offered to pay you more.

This kind of goes back to an incident that I had a few weeks back where a customer thought that they were getting me personally but they weren't.

Depends how you word your emails I guess. If your not already promised to someone else and you have a good dj on your books I'd just take the booking as normal and send my other guy out.

It depends whether the Contract says DJ x or its more vague--

For example if I go out on a personal booking my stage name is shown as the Performer.

SERVICE PROVIDED CRAZY K BARN DANCE CALLER WITH RECORDED MUSIC

However if I want to retain the ability to switch things round it might be something like SERVICE PROVIDED BARN DANCE CALLER WITH RECORDED MUSIC

And before some smart :Censored: says how do they know who is turning up as CRAZY K?

If I'm already booked, I'm already booked. Simple as that. I wouldn't dream of letting a client down just for the lure of extra cash. I built my reputation on good customer service and I wouldn't risk that for a few extra quid.

That's a no brainer as far as I see

You are already booked at another function on the night that they are enquiring about, so no amount of money is going to persuade me to let someone down that has already booked me.

The question you originally posed was "YOU are already booked", hence why it's a no brainer

First come first served. first person to book will get myself. (im not sure if thats a privilege :D )

however those that dont.... dont need to worry because they aint missing much :D

as for doubling the prices. wouldnt do that on recommendations as such. You know if you're good enough and so will the client and if you are you will already be commanding a good fee without the need to double it.

Yes I got the fact it was two different scenarios

In the first one Gary asked what would you do if you were booked and someone else wanted to book you, I replied it was a no brainer because if you are booked then you are booked, full stop.

Then Gary changed the scenario and said if you were Multi Op or had a few DJ's working for you and you hadn't specified a DJ for a particular event, then what would you do, well again it's a no brainer, if you have DJ's available and you haven't specified a paricular DJ then there isn't a question worth asking there.

I cant believe anyone would want to--it was just to demonstrate the difference that exists--;)
