hi all! i'm dr. k from america, but i've been living in bali for ages now. i guess this is supposed to be for uk mobile disco guys but i've found it to be the best wedding dj forum on the net by far!

ok so a little about me - i make my living leading a band that mixes traditional indonesian music and dancers with dj beats, we play the tourist circuit here in bali. i got into djing weddings by getting booked with my band for a few receptions where the party wanted me to stay on and dj afterwards. after doing that twice i thought "i should be getting paid extra for this, shouldn't i?" and now it's a pretty significant source of added income for me.

anyway i've been lurking for a while and it's been fun reading about all your exploits and experiences. it's funny how similar my experiences playing, say, a romainian wedding reception in southeast asia are to what happens at a gig in, say, newcastle upon tyne or something.

Welcome, I was in Bali for a Holiday not long ago with my wife--wow must be hard DJing over there with all that HUMIDITY ===phew!!!!!!!!

Then theres the torrential rain every day:eek:

Are all your gigs in venues with air conditioning:confused:

or just open air with minimal clothing;)

I cant speak personally ( although my Mother was a Geordie--born in Newcastle--) but im not sure a Wedding in Newcastle would be that similar to a Romanian one OTHER than the huge amounts of alcohol :D :D :D :D :D

the romanian wedding involved a lot of black eyed peas, OMG by usher, dancing queen, y.m.c.a., and i will survive, and an old guy coming up and yelling at me for playing the music too loud. and yes a lot of :beerchug:

starting to sound familiar yet?

yep it's very humid here but i grew up in the south (of the u.s.) where it's hotter in the summer than it is in bali, so i don't mind it that much. the torrential rain is only in the rainy season, which i actually kinda enjoy - the tourists all buzz off and you have the island much more to yourself. plus there's lightning storms.

usually i'm playing outdoors, and i don't really mind it, but i do usually run back to my air-conned room asap afterwards.

awww, shucks, it sounds so great when you put it that way! and yes, it's a great job i'm lucky to have, even though i start to feel like murph from the magic tones every once in a while

but yeah despite the hotel band thing, not to mention the mediocre pay (i'm contracted, not an actual conrad employee, so i don't get any of that cush overseas executive package nonsense) it's still pretty much a dream job. i even get to play original music in an original style! (traditional indonesian techno no less)

anyway thanks for that, it's been a tough, slow, low paying year, what with the recession and all. but reading that flat out made my day! :jumping:
