Forgot to mention this totally about the wedding I did last sunday (10/10/10) and it concerns Haze Machines.

I was bringing in the equipment and placing it where I wanted it so that I could move the van out of the way. I bought in the Haze Machine and one of the staff said "Sorry, I don't think you can use that!". I didn't have time to explain fully there and then so continued to set up the equipment. I had about 15 minutes to spare so I then went and found the member of staff who had commented and they came around to the fact that it should be ok to use it but it wasn't their decision to make and was up to the Manager on Duty.

I had been playing for about 15 minutes and hadn't seen the Manager as yet so plugged it in and got it working. After around 30 minutes the Manager came in to say hello and the first thing he did was notice the Haze Machine. He pointed to it on the floor and shook his head and then came behind the decks..."Was you not told about Smoke Machines?" he asked..."Yes" I replied "and I am not using one this evening"..."What is that then?" he asked (He wasn't aggressive at all and clearly wanted to know what it was)..I explained what it was, how it worked and informed him that it had been running for 30 minutes with no problems and I had never had any problems with any alarms in any venues since I had been using it.

He was amazed and I was surprised that he had never seen one before! He also thanked me for taking the time to explain and said that he would take this into consideration with other Discos.

It seems that some people WILL listen to us and WILL take on board what we say. I told him that it enhances the whole effect of the lights but you don't really know it's there.

What haze machine do you use, Gary? Is it the HP2s? What haze fluid do you use? I've set an alarm off before using my HP2s hazer with dense haze fluid...

HP2 Hazer with Dense Haze and no problems whatsoever.

Not to cause an argument, but a few people that use hazers don't think the HP2 is a proper haze machine - it's just a smoke machine with a fan using diluted fluid.

If you compare it to a Look Unique or Neutron Star, you'll see what they mean.

I have the same as you Gary, and don't use it very often, but you can still see the haze, whereas on the (much more) expensive models, you can't.

The QTX1000 is supposed to be decent at around £200 but i'm not sure what sort of effect that produces ie. you can still see the haze or whether it is a very fine haze.

The QTX1000 isn't a proper hazer either (although it is better than the HP2)

The QTX isn't bad (although the first one I had, had a tendancy to spray out hot fluid from the front nozzle! :eek:). I use a large floor fan directly behind it to dissipate the haze evenly throughout the room so haven't experienced any problems with alarms on the few occasions I've used it.

I have a couple of Smoke Factory Tour Hazer 2s which i have found excellent ,they have lots of refinements which you don,t get on some so called hazers you can have it set so fine you cant even detect its working.

When i first got them i sent out a covering letter to all my regular venues explaining how they work to date have had no issues with use.

Yes i agree in fact they are now £ 900 a go but mine pay for themselves as they are part of the hire stock.

Saying that a good hazer will transform even a mediocre light show and are a must have for pro light shows .

Just purchased and used QTX Hazer Fx1000 and highly impressed with control of haze which i have on DMX control.
Used it on frid in room normally that doesnt allow smoke /hazer machine but explained to manager who was happy to try it ..happy to report no problems with detectors :)

Has ANYONE had any issues with haze and alarms from a half decent machine?

Please note: A Hazer WILL set off SMOKE detectors, however the detectors have to be IONISATION detectors. Optical smoke detectors wont be affected. Most detectors can be seen as ionisation by the Red Led on the detector itself (not lit up red but red led - opticals have a clear led that light red when smoke is detected). However not all detector makers use this colour coding so its impossible to tell unless you take a detector down and read the label! (Unless you know your detector makes!).Obviously HEAT detectors wont be affected (these can be seen as having an "open" detector with a element in the middle).
I have this info as I am a fire alarm engineer.

In summary - I wouldnt use a hazer unless the manager of the venue has given permission. If the fire alarm goes off and its connected to a monitoring station then the brigade will be called and possible a charge from the brigade for coming out for a false alarm, the venue could lose priority attendance from the brigade if its had too many false alarms and the venue could pass the bill on to you. If you have had permission from the venue manager then the problem is his.
