Residency Interview Today...

Hi All,

I have a meeting with a venue manager today at 1:00pm and am looking for some help and advice.

He said he wants to meet me to talk to me face-to-face, but also wants me to take my playout equipment...my laptop and my Denon HD2500...as he wants me to play some music...i'm assuming he wants to see what i'd play if I got the job (He also said he has got rid of his DJ he had for 12 years as he got 'stale' and wanted someone fresh, also, when the DJ had another booking, he used to put rubbish DJ's in the residency).

There is another DJ going to meet him at 12:00pm...is it anyone off this forum?

Just wondered what I should do? The age range for the Friday residency is 25(ish) - 65(ish) and the possible Tuesday residency is a teen night.

Any help and advice will be much appreciated as I have never done this before and am quite nervous :(

I don't quite understand this to be totally honest with you.
I don't agree with interviews etc...I think he would find it much more helpful if he saw you in your environment doing what you do.

Didn't he mention anything about taking a mic and showing what you're like on it etc? At the end of the day, anyone can string a few tunes together can't they. I really don't see the point of going along, taking your playout system and just playing a couple of tunes. You could easily take an I-Pod or MP3 Player and say "Right, I'd play this...and this...oh! and this too".

Not meaning to sound funny and best of luck to you but it just seems really weird to me.

Seriously I wonder about the playout--if your doing Weddings and Birthdays in fact any personal events you would work off a playlist a lot of the time anyway?

If its a non specific event for all ages then maybe he wants to know what the size and variety of your music is---maybe he will spring a few selections on you--like have you got the Cowboy Macarena--you know someone who does though ;)

Possibly the biggest issue might be who you would have as backup if your ill, on holiday or doing another gig.

I get the impression this is a major reason why they are looking around, possibly also the dreaded "price" will enter the conversation--if its a how much do you charge conversation to start with I wouldnt think it worth overstaying your visit.

Anyway, be positive and im sure you will impress.

Im not sure I would worry about PLI, PAT and pro dub too much.;)

Offer him a free event and let him see you live. A thursday or sunday party would be ideal.

I did this with my residency (not that i ever play there) and im in my second year now.

Hi guys, thanks for all the 'Good Luck's'

I went over to the venue and took my laptop with Virtual DJ and I took some CD's.

They already have sound and lighting installed and a playout system (All Denon!) - I just needed to connect my laptop.

It is a nice rig they have and I played some music I would normally play for 13-16year olds, as they are launching a teen night on Tuesdays, and both the manager and owner seemed very pleased with me...especially when they started asking me for advice on how to improve the rig!! :D

As I was packing up some other DJ's arrived, but they were for the Friday night Residency for 30+...I did tell the manager I was happy to do both nights, but I think he would prefer someone older for the Friday.

He said he will call me by the end of the week as I may need to sign a contract etc...so fingers crossed! :)

Good lad scott hope you go far with that mate. I no it sound silly but I'm a resident at my local bowling alley on fridays and saturdays...unless booked and that was an agreement between me and the manager so I can still go out and fill bookings

I've just come off the phone to the venue manager about the residency...and I got the job :D

He has also asked me to do a Halloween Party next week, which i'm going to do and offered me a Wedding for Saturday, but I am already booked :)

...Maybe my luck is changing :)
