I'm interested to know what people download onto and how they connect it to their play out system. Do people just link straight in? Do you download straight onto a laptop or transfer via a USB drive?

Usually either the iphone or straight off the download source. While doing this however as I have one laptop I go onto cds so I'm not asking the computer to do too much at once.

As formerly alluded to, I've seen folk like yourself state many many times how important it is not to connect a laptop which is the primary ( only? ) playout device, to the internet. That must surely be fraught with danger, even when using trusted sites like Amazon, etc.
In my very humble, and not really informed opinion, I'd have said that the only sensible way would be to have a download machine separate to the playout. Two laptops, or laptop and HDC. And yes, before anybody starts, that will immediately require the P word, but it's simply a required licence.
Isn't the ability to scan and check/preview downloads prior to playing them worth the fiver a week? It's got to be better than corrupting your whole system. Anf if I understand corectly, by downloading direct, I guess the only backup is your download site? Even dicier.
Download to laptop for me, scan, copy to usb stick, put into Cortex/Numark. Simples.

I have used a none playout laptop and dongle previously and transferred to my main PO PC via USB drive. If I ever need to do it again I'll use my iPhone 4 linked to mixer in the same way as Shaun, as a rule I dont do it often!!! But it's there if needed...

I've used my laptop with dongle a couple of times in the past but don't like plugging/unplugging anything into my gig machine when it's running so it means playing a track or two from CD whilst I copy the tracks across which can be a bit of a pain mid-gig, since I got the iPhone I can just download straight to there and play from it on a spare channel on the mixer.
