Now I know I have raised questions before on the subject of generators, but I really do seem to have a mental block when it comes to generators!

This time, I have 2 very separate questions, but as they are both relating to generators, I'm lumping them both in together in this thread.

1. (Nothing whatsoever with DJing) We've just bought a little gennie for powering power tools, etc outside. I checked that it was suitable for the purpose before I bought it, so that's fine.... but I was wondering if anyone could translate the "Loads & Ratings" diagram from the instruction manual, because I can't make sense of it!!!! (A copy of the page in question is below)

2. I noticed recently when looking at HSS Hire stuff that they mentioned that the generators they had for hire were not suitable for powering sensitive IT or sound equipment, for which specialised generators should be used. This is just for interest, I'm not actually looking to hire one..... but what would be the difference between these standard gennies and the specialised ones?

Anyone got any ideas of either of the above?

the smaller gennies that you get from HSS don't as far as I know have automatic voltage regulation.

a few years ago I monitored the voltage from one of these small HSS 240v gennies an it was up and down like a whore's drawers (going 197 - 260 - 120 - 105 - 251 etc etc) literally every couple of seconds.

diesel gennies are best for this industry, but PM Richie T on the squatjuice forum, he is THE man when it comes to gennies, if there's anything he doesn't know about gennies, it's not worth knowing.

Ta Tony - as I say, its a curiosity thing rather than really needing to know, but ta for the tip!

HSS do some pretty big gennies as well as the smaller ones, and they do both petrol & diesel, but they state in the catalogue that none of them are suitable. Not having automatic voltage regulation makes sense though, and maybe that's the answer. :teeth:

Any luck in translating the instruction manual? (the other question I posted :teeth: )

Although I am definately not a technical man, I remember working on a generator years ago, and watching my Technics rims (outside of the decks) changing speeds big time because of the change in voltage...

Or should I just go to bed now?

No, that sounds about right! They do it with mains voltage too, but it is not really noticeable (put it on the same circuit as a hoover or something, and you will notice it)
