Good old laptop

I bought a new HP laptop around 4 months ago, its been working fine. It replaced a small form PC that i had been using for around 2 years.

Last wednesday, i was using the new HP laptop in the office when it suddenly went off, and wouldnt turn back on :eek: . Of course i need the laptop for the weekends gigs so now im panicing a bit.

I phone HP support who tell me i'll have to send it in to get fixed and it will be at least 5 days before i get it back, not good!!

The small form PC is now the office PC, and isnt setup for gigging, so i had to go back to a 5 year old laptop that my wife uses for facebook. I installed Virtual DJ and spend about 30 mins setting it up.

Its only has a 1.7 mobile proccessor and 1G of memory, but it managed to run a disco / karaoke last night with no problems.

I had planned to sell it to a friend for £80 a while ago, glad i kept it now.

always got a ipod with plenty music on as a backup, but cant run karaoke with it.

It's a tad alarming that your iPod is your main backup.

Having considered options for backup I decided that PERSONALLY only a complete searchable backup system which is instantly available would tick most of the boxes.

Something is better than nothing but a good pair of braces and a sturdy belt are better.

Is that enough cliches?:D

its not meant for Djing as such, just a backup to keep music playing till i sort any problem.

to date (touch wood) ive never had a computer problem at a gig.

any system could fail, cd players, ipods, computers, amps etc. Does any actually carry a full backup system?

as long as i have some sort of backup im happy.

No. I couldn't get it all in the car. Since purchasing the IDJ2 off Vectis my back up now consists of VDJ5 and Mediamonkey on the laptop, CD decks and mixer and a folder full of CD's and a spare amp. If a light or a speaker goes. I'll just soldier on.

I would nip back home and get another speaker if it was quite close as Mary can carry on in my absence no problem at all

Er, yes.

Two laptops, CD Player, iPhone.

Two Mackies - If one died I could solider on.

Spare mixer and cables.

Admittedly, I don't carry an extra sub.

If your laptop failed, I would say it would be very difficult to run the rest of the evening on an Ipod. A spare laptop is essential I would say, unless you have a CD player and a wallet of CDs or something else.

Yes except speakers--one cabinet would be enough probably though, people probably wouldnt notice;)

Ive got around 6 hours worth of music on the ipod, including 3, 30 min ready made mixes. That should give me time to sort out any problem. If im travelling more than 30 mins from home, i do take a backup cd player & some disks.

The one time i had a mixer problem, i simply connected the laptop straight to the amp, and used the volume controls in virtual DJ. I didnt have a mic but it wasnt a big problem.

I also use mackies, its unlikely both would fail, if they were too, id have to travel home for the HK's as i dont have room in the car to transport all the speakers at once.

Theres a limit to what anyone can do, its not practical to have spare everything with you.

No, I belong to 2 recovery services and have people I can call on.

If you'd have posted what your back up was instead of just saying it was an IPod, then I wouldn't have commented.
