Domain Renewals Group - SCAM

I know this has been touched on before, but I've had a rash of clients getting 'reminders' from the Domain Renewals Group who are a recognised bunch of scam artists trying to get you to transfer your domains to them for an inflated fee by dishing out convincing-looking 'renewal packs'.

Only trust renewal notices from your current host. Anyone else is likely to be fishing (or phishing)... not sure which is worse.

Reminds me of the Domain Registry of America who were by far the worst offenders of this kind of thing.

I handle a lot of .cn domains for clients, too, and proportionally these get an extortionate amount of these things. The trouble is, the regular emails you get from the official registry (CNNIC) which you must act on look a lot like spam, too!

Yes I had an letter and I emailed Martin asking about it, not really thinking it was a scam. My thinking was "because its a letter it can't be a scam". Had it been an email I wouldn't of bothered about it.

I've been getting the letters from the USA for about the last 6 years. I literally bin them as soon as I see them.

don't forget the european web directory scam in this list aswell. it's hard enough to make a living as it is, without these muppets trying to get at your hard earned wedge

Believe it or not the DROA aren't the worst I've seen when it comes to getting control of domains. I had a client who decided to handle their own domains and fell victim to the DROA, and it was surprisingly easy to get them back. Although they'd had their $$$$ by then...
