As most people no i got the MagicQ DMX lead for £10 of there site and got the demo of the software.

Well i'm going to do 2 reviews on this. I have Done the first one showing you the USB lead and working DMX little show.

Looks good so far for a tenner but you have to reprograme / re set the software after 5 hours. Good for evaluation purposes.
The fully version is £60 which IMO good value for money when compared to sweetlight.
Is the software Free? I was not able to find it on the web.

This might sound like a stupit question but I just want to be sure.

That USB device, is it USB to DMX (XLR)? So a DMX socket on the other end so you wire in your lights?

Also, is the software MIDI controllable (ie you can get a usb MIDI cc controller patched in to get the best of both worlds, hardware and software) or is the only option for controlling the software mouse and keyboard?

I too have ordered the £10 version just as a backup for my Sunlite.
After the time limit has expired just restart the software again, but should cover most gigs as a backup.

As for the MIDI question - give them a call on 02380 238 666 they are only down the road from you in Southampton.

i would be interested too, but i suspect i know the answer

being a long term user of chamsys magic q, running both the maxi-wing and pc wing systems, it is with out doubt one of the most powerful lighting control platforms available, but it is pitched at the pro lighting designer / operator rather than the occasional user ( i mean that in the nicest possible way...)
for this reason, it can appear over complex or difficult to operate compared with simpler systems

ive got chamsys running a christmas install at the moment, 12 full universes of dmx including a lot ( approx 4000ch worth) of led, being run from the pixel mapping part of the software so we can run low res video through the fixtures), and it has handled this with not a blip.

daslight is a great system to get a good small show from quickly, but i would be very hesitant running a big show from it as i find the software rather restrictive

midi control via a usb interface should be possible on chamsys, but in not sure if it will support midi in the demo mode.

Get the Eco 512 as an absolute minimum.

Software is free to download and play with, and has a reasonable 3D simulator on-screen so you can play before you buy the dongle.

It's DVC2 you want - DVC is old and nasty.

Once you suss out the controls it's a doddle.

You can pop it sound to light also.

It's the initial sussing out that can take a bit of time.

If you understand DMX, and you get your head round the software, it's then dead easy to program scenes and effects very quickly indeed.

You should also make sure that you have ALL of your lighting and effects programmed, each on their own unique address ranges, so that you can mix & match gear on the fly. Daslight won't care if there's a wizard missing, or a couple of cans.

I'm just waiting for my MagicQ to be delivered. Seeing as it is only a tenner, I thought I would give it a go :)

All I want it to do is give me a better control over my 2 RevoIII's and 2 Quad Gems and possibly a smoke machine. Do you think I can achieve this with MagicQ or have I wasted £10?

yes, providing that you can get on with the software, you can program any light show you want from one par can to a full size stadium show.

But to make it work off sound you need an other usb card. Its put me right off the idea now.
