View Full Version : Lighting at Weddings

Hi people,

Just a quick question regarding lighting at weddings. I'm currently looking for new lights to update my lighting bar, and was wondering what suggestions or what you currently use for the first dance?
I'm toying with the idea of a white starlight effect light showering the dance floor alone, to give a nice atmosphere. What do you all use? And also any suggestions for a good white lighting effect?

How much do you want to spend?

I find a pair of Martin Wizards linked together, on a slow program looks fantastic.

You could also use a large mirror ball, with a powerful light source (not a pin spot), which also looks great.

Nothing too pricey, probably £200 tops. Never thought about using a mirror ball! That would probably do exactly what I want really, and cost effective!
Thanks

Yep. Definitely go with the wizzards then. :zip:

LoL, yeah. The price of them isn't going to come down to my price bracket unfortunatly.

A pair of Datamoons set to white, slow rotate would be good. Come in at £250 with case and controller though...

Yeah, but that would be really bright though Dan!

You'd have to supply sunglasses for the bride and groom!

I use 4 EVL spins set to slow white or pink rotate and its not overpoweringly (is that a word?) bright...

I suggested the datamoons as they could be used for the main part of the disco as well.. rather than the white mini-moon things which would only really be any good for slow tracks... :)

I had Datamoons for a while and got rid of them for that very reason - 'cos they were just too bright!

Perhaps I play smaller venues than you?

Or perhaps the datamoons are just brighter that the spins :teeth:

I always have the spins angled down onto the floor early on in the night, i guess that avoids them shining in peoples' eyes. When the dancefloor gets full, i'll move them up so they cover everyone better, and block the beams from people sitting down.

Heres a pic from a small venue which shows what i mean quite well - http://www.revolution-discos.co.uk/gallery/showlarge.php?image=23.06.06/lights_1.jpg

Well both the NJD Datamoons and EVL Spins are bright lights. However, i couldn't see a problem if you wanted to shine them onto the dancefloor. In my opinion, it would add that extra special effect to the first dance and most of all - their wedding day.

Well, there's my 2p worth :teeth:

Sorry Dan :embarasse

Methinks we were posting at around the same time :teeth:

Well, looks as if its going to be either the NJD's or the EVL's, just have to do an extra night to pay for them then!

The only real advantage of the EVLs is that they have an extra slot for a customed designed gobo - perhaps for your company name or special occasion.

We use EVLs, and they are great..as are NJDs. Both lights are nice and bright (both take ELC 250w bulbs...i think)

Good luck in whatever you decide to buy though :thumbs_up :teeth:

I wouldn't say the Datamoon's were too bright, they are also an excellent good all round effect. I would have thought a mirror ball would be more hassle than its worth - having to find somewhere central to hang it in the room, not sure how effective it would be up on a mobile rig? Just make sure you get a controller with the datamoons, otherwise they might go into strobe / shake mode during the 1st dance - romantic it is not.

Unless you're playing N Trance - Set you free as the first dance of course.

Good point :thumbs_up

With the EVLs, you can control them with a little contraption called an e-pod. This has four pink circular buttons, of which are:

1) Blackout/Gobo Select
2) Strobe
3) Sound-to-Light
4) Smooth Mode

Paul -

The IQMX40, 60 or 80 controllers from NJD are designed for the Datamoons
Cheap and very effective
