Keep organised in everything you do...from paper work to tidying down cables.

Matthew, posts #2, #3, and #6 are gold plated. #7 isn't bad advice at all, but not everyone attaches as much importance to planning as Vectis. It works/worked for him, and it is vital, but each of us runs differently.

1.Keep it simple - only play stuff everyone can relate too.
2.Have a backup plan - for everything , lights , Pa , playout , mic even music choice ( I have a safe list of floorfillers written down incase I get a mind block )
3.Be inspired by others without imitating them - If you see someone doing something different and it works try something similar , just don't copy.
4.read the crowd - funky house probobly won't work at a retirement party
5.be professional - paperwork , image , advertising , meetings and working legally all helps. Everyones a potential client and first impressions count.act how you want to be remembered.

IMO there is no magic formula, but I feel the following qualities are important

Preparation
Consultation
Customer Service
Versatility
Confidence

have a back up plan for music - people somtimes say no cheese just underground drum n bass - then their 100 40 year old aunts turn up !!!

if possible take as much music as possible - I still use cds but I take my pc now just incase i need to download anything ( if possible)

Always carry spares especially fuses and cables. Think ahead but do not overanalyse situations. Listen to your self on mic via long cables wireless etc to learn how you actually sound.
Never assume anything.
