Hi Disco people.
Just found your forum and joined.
I am a 56 year old man who likes life and all it has to offer.
I have a daughter getting married next august and have decided to do our own music. I am going to buy the basic gear which needs to be good quality but not the most expensive on a total budget of around £500.00.
I have just bought a Numark CD mix 1 for £150.00 (brand new and boxed, not delivered yet. I am going to keep this as my CD played for home music and think it is just the job for me. I will be asking you kind people for advice on amps and speakers etc in the coming weeks/months. This is hopefully so that I do not get ripped off by the E bay gang and other spivvers.

Mostly from a budget point of view, the Disco is not the main entertainment of the evening.We are having a live country dance group £500.00 ish, a hot air balloon glow ( we are not posh but have lot of friends who will do this for the price of gas only) £300.00 ish.

Just curious - you say you've decided to do it yourself because of the budget, but you're spending up to £500 on kit. For that sort of money, you could have found yourself a very good DJ with a very nice set up, so I'm not sure where you are hoping to save yourself some money. :confused:

Welcome, Steve. As you may have guessed, the answer to every question you have can be found here. However, your cost equation may be a tad skewed, for instance even a budget sound system capable of coping at such a function could set you back £500 straight away.

If you simply want control over the music played, and the level it's played at, that's not a problem with a reputable DJ.


Whatever you wish to do, ask on here, and someone will put you right, we're a helpful bunch here. :)

If you are intend on doing it yourself then I suggest you hire rather than buy as £500 for a disco set up is a very small budget.

I would also say that £500 can get you a very good and presentable DJ on the night. I cant speak for everyone however I have had clients who wanted their own style of music for the evening and been more than happy to provide such a service.

welcome to the forum. you have already bought the cd mix, but before you buy anything else, start asking questions and do a proper cost excercise. work out how much you will actually have to spend on the gear £500 - £150 you have already spent only leaves £350 that don't leave you much to get a decent amp and speakers (plus we always advise BACK UP GEAR even brand new stuff can go wrong especially the budget equipment) and then the lights and of course you will have to keep up to date with the music between now and then. if you are thinking of carrying on afterwards then great but if you are thinking of off loading the gear after, you might be spending a lot of time and effort and only saving pennies. :beer1:

If we are a bit miffed its because it probably confirms how some of the Public view us.

They think its dead easy to buy a bit of budget gear clank it together .....nick a bit of music of the Net...and Hey Presto....no more Disco expenses for this and subsequent functions.


I'll make a prediction...around about September 2011....you'll wish you hadn't.

i'm not miffed and i don not think anyone else is martin. it is interesting to find out why, he has decided to go down this route, morgey may i also suggest that you have a very good rea around the forum in general, please except my apologise if i say anything untoward no offence is meant by anything i say, a lot of people think all we do is turn up with a load of cd's and press play, and they have a party, in reality there is so much more to it, that you need to think about,
what happens if you have a piece of equipment go wrong on the night( not a problem with lights but sound)
what music do you intend playing (is your music knowledge good enough tobe able to keep it going)
and the big one for me
do you really want all that hassle on the big day, my daughter got married this year, we considered all the options of doing it ourselves with friends giving us a hand to set up and dismantle, but in the end we ended up paying for someone to come in and do it,
i am sure others will add to the list, be cause i haven't covered everything(by a long way)
remember also some hotels will require to see a pat cert and pli as well(although in honestly not enough do imo).
don't let us stop you if it is something you would really like to do, but do make sure you make the most of this forum to get first class information before you go to much further

i joined yesterday and have sat here now probably for about 9 hours just trawling the forums and im not new to all this (apart from the digital bit) and these guys an gals know what they are saying i just spent £2000 alone in the last week on updating my gear and boy i still dont have enough

why not hire a pro and do a guest spot... then if it all goes horribly wrong... you have a get out of the dog house free card... and some one on hand who can pull the function back in line in five or six tunes... best of luck

The disco at the wedding will be 1.5 hours max.
Most guests will have left before it starts.
One of our relatives is a DJ and will do it for us for pleasure.
The venue has back up gear we could use for free and the same DJ has used it before. We don't want lights, he is bringing a few of his.
If it all goes wrong it will not be a big deal.
The day after the wedding I will own a basic set up that I have always wanted for my own use, we have lot's of garden parties and get togethers where it will be used. I will not have to hire anymore for this.
I am not skint, the budget is not just about the wedding but a general budget choice. If I have to spend more I will, but £500.00 seemed about right. I am a plumber and can give anyone free advice on how to fit a bathroom suite, but tiling it afterwards is another skill.
Can I still be part of this forum or am I not welcome because I am not hiring a DJ ??

You need amplification and speakers,
Questions to be asked are.

1, How large is the room and how many guests?
2,How descreete and tidy do you want the system?
2,New or 2nd hand?(2nd hand will give you a better system for your budget)
3,Applications for the system,I know its a wedding but are you wanting it for music quallity or speach quallity or both?

Answer these questions and we will endevour to sort out some kit for your needs.

Morgey I hope we didnt give you the wrong impression with our replies as of course your more than welcome on here. I will say however if your wanting to have a rig for just family events of small numbers then we might be able to do something with £350. Sound system is the single most important part of a DJ's set up so if your wanting to do more than just family events and become a mobile jock then I would invest more into the rig if possible.
