Hi My name is Ken, Im 46 and not done a disco for many years (like around 25), done the pubs when i was younger and wish to start again. Not into bang bang boom music and i dont think many parties are to be honest as there is such huge age gaps. Anyway i have been offered a basic set up which i have seen in use a couple of times for a decent price of £250. I know i need to buid up a good light system and most of all a music library. Could anyone just suggest some sites to buy equipment from. I dont want cheap stuff, just middle of the road to start with then build up from there. Also when i DJ'd years ago it was a case of go the local record shop and get the music needed, does it still work the same or is there sites cheap enough to get good music from. Hope i aint gone on too much. Many Thanks Guys.

No, seriously, we will need a bit more ( lot more, actually ) information, and we can give better advice. One tip I can give, Maplins is not your best place to look for kit.

No I thought about Maplins but thought better. I have been looking on many sites re equipment and seen some pretty impressive stuff, but where do you stop. I am not sure who is the best to buy from to be honest. Where do other people buy there gear and get good service. Like i said i think the stuff i have been offered is fairly basic but i suppose you have to start with what you can afford, but dont want to look a plank when i set up. I will be building my kit up first before any work will be done. Im lucky in a sense as i have a large hall to practice set ups in and get my light sorted.

Hi Ken, welcome to the forum

Best advice I can give is to concentrate on your sound system first. You can probably find some cheap basic lighting that will do you till you can upgrade them later.

Also some basic backup is essential (spare cheap amp, couple of cd walkmans or an MP3 player would be suffice till you can maybe purchase some better backup gear)

Perhaps our members can offer more insight if they had a few more details

* Equipment you've already got/purchased
* Budget for new equipment


As for where to buy gear, I'm sure our members Will be along to post their good experiences with retailers. Many a bargain can also be found in our For Sale section here on this site.

Welcome. I am Lancashire so close, but not that close. Enjoy the forum as it is a great source of info.

My advice is think about what you want to achieve and then work out how to get there. Too many of us have garages full of random gear. For gods sake I have a £300 dbx drive rack hanging around on a shelf. Really need to find time to wire that sod back in.
