Damn companies and their offers!

After humming and haring over deck stands for the past week, finally bit the bullet and ordered an Ultimax 1.2m DJ stand with trusslite and NJD LED star cloth.

I'll dig out a picture of my old rig sometime, it wasn't pretty - No deck stand (relied on the venues' tables and a large cloth I saved from being thrown out at a local scout hut :eek: ) and an ugly/heavy steel truss.

Ordered from DJKIT as their NEWYEAR offer code expires today, so saved over £40 in all

Just a new centerpiece light to go and i'm all set for my February launch! (equipment wise at least!)

It makes me wonder how I managed in the past! I feel ashamed almost :(

From what i've been reading on here I think it was the right choice. It was £50 more than the Rhino one I was looking at, but hopefully the gigs will come in thick & fast and it'll pay for itself before long!

I shall be buying some kind of new stand option tomorrow...well today now. Dunno about an Ultimax for life though...guess it could be if you don't abuse it like me.

I have had the classic Ultimax 4 ft version with winches and wheels for about 10 years now and except for the odd set of wheels its served me very well, especially when you consider I use it as a trolley too, I put 2 winche pods and a pole bag on the bottom shelf and 2 RCF322 powered speakers in bags and a slappa suit case containing CD wallets on the top shelf and wheel it in and out of venues, me and the roadie can only just lift it into the back of the van with a struggle. Tonight I was wheeling it through the walled garden at the rear of the hotel where I was and snagged it on an uneven flag stone and bent the bottom rail that the wheel attaches to pretty badly, the weld is definately stressed so I pinched the brick they use to keep the fire door open to put under it just in case to get me through the night.

I use the stand inside a S+H booth so the appearance hasn't really bothered me till now but looking at it tonight it is a bit mancky really, bits of paint flaked off and the odd bit of rust here and there and some of the welds do look a bit suspect now too. I'm not sure if I will get a new one the same or go for something different, wondered about going for one of the DJ booth pro ones with the booth and shelves and overhead but its the winches that I would miss...prob will end up with the same.

Don't be put off though as there is no way I should have been using mine as I have, its too much weight to put on it and when you are moving along and hit an uneven flag stone its a lot of momentum and it would knacker anything.

I saw the replacements on the web site too, think the wording was "complete set of knobs"...sounds like somewhere else I know...lol.

Yep, I hear you, I have spend just short or £2k over last 3 or so months on new gear and computer equipment. . . and even then much of it was from haggling down the "buy now or best offer" on ebay and going second hand!!!

That is one of the major advantages of the ultimax: all the parts are available separately if you do happen to break something, or if you want to change the configuration (eg add wheels / winch / different sized crossbars / different styles of overhead, etc)...

...not to mention all the 'add ons' if you need / want them. :)

(The old joke of having had a broom last all your life and only changing the handle /broom head x amount of times comes to mind ;) )

They do definitely outlast the other makes by a considerable period though. :)

I have a pair of shelves that attach to the uprights that I sometimes put moving heads on and also a pair of speaker horns that are very useful when you are in tiny venues and you can hide a mini bin under the stand and put a pair of 10s on the speaker horns and fit in a tiny corner and still have a resonable show. I also sometimes put 32 inch screens on bulldog brackets and drop them onto the speaker horns each side of the show...ok your prob not meant to but they are plenty strong enough and nothing is going to bring them down.

Thing about Ultimax is they are originally engineers so they know how to build this kind of thing properly, Andy there is a really nice chap and very helpful and will make you a special order, forget the other chap's name but he used to put his stand assembled on the rear of his car on a cycle carrier and go off to jobs like it.

Spoke to Andy today and ordered a pair of new ends and 4 wheels for them and also a new trusslight as mine is tarnished and prob beyond cleaning up...hopefully be here tomorrow.
