connecting laptop to tv

hi all i have a samsung r519 laptop running vista, and am trying to connect it to an old school telly that doesnt have svga input only the rca yelloe red whi, ive got the cable below, is it just a case of extending the yellow one onto to rca video port on the tv and away we go? thanks graham

Like Chris says, in theory, these adaptors should work but, in practise, the results can be very hit and miss. Problems we've encountered with using a similar device include major noise interference, loss of colour, and, at times, no video signal at all.

Although I was very apprehensive when I first tried the following device, I found that these do work and are worth the investment. Apart from VGA cables for short runs these are the adaptors we use now:

Strange how they work for some and not for others. I used a VGA to bnc convertor box from cpc for ages and never had no problem with it.

It's not just those adaptors. I could never get my S-Video out to work properly with an S-Video cable. Again, the picture was always distorted with no colour.

When I looked in to this subject in detail, I found that a PC's VGA signal is quite different to PAL so it needed some electronics to actually convert the signal to the PAL format. Bearing this in mind, I'm not entirely sure how the adaptor in the OP can work in the first place.

UPDATE:

I've just googled VGA to BNC Converter and found that these types of connections are suitable for CCTV/PVR devices and are not the PAL standard. Therefore, these adaptors cannot be used to connect a PC to a PAL TV.
