Orange Juice worth more than a DJ

Sorry for another pricing thread, but I found this quite amusing.

I was doing a wedding in a castle and they left lying around a bill from the wedding the previous day. I was astonished at some of the prices being charged - the bill was itemised - and really highlighted how much I felt undervalued.

However my services are more value than the resident DJ - because the charge made by the hotel to supply jugs of orange juice for 160 people (client providing own champagne) was £12 higher than the fee for the resident DJ.

If I was to total up a few 'additional' costs such as corkage, cake stand hire, knife hire etc, it soon comes to more than my fee for a disco :eek: :eek:

Talk about feeling worthless :D :D

I have been doing a quote to DJ at a Wedding at Lennoxlove.
The customer wants me to DJ for £200 on a Monday night. I had quoted £280.

I do loads of wedding at Lennoxlove and know the prices. Last month at the venue the couple had spent more on canapes with the arrival glass of champagne than what I charged to DJ. The venue costs £10,000 just to hire.... the food starts at £70 per head!!

It is crazy that people want quality for so many parts of the big day.. but then consider budget for the DJ.

No it's not, we are tremendously undervalued when you take into consideration the costs of everything else.

Most of us are running a business first, because without nailing that, you won't have any work in the first place to able to become "too self important" as you put it.

If it's anything like the stuff we used when I worked in a 4 star hotel, it is even cheaper than aldi. Something daft like 5 litres for £1. Came in concentrate and we had to water it down.

My thoughts also. In this case I don't think it is so much the DJ to blame for undervaluing - but the venue.

Indeed, I doubt anyone at the hotel (perhaps with the exception of the manager / owners) grossed such an amount. Hence I suggest that at times, it is easy to be self important and perhaps a little avaricious. It's fine when someone values your services at 300 quid or more, but it's no insult when people do not.

By the way, please don't suggest I am goading you. What would be the point of this forum if everyone was exactly the same!

Dunno my kit as a chef was worth about £1500....

Incidentally, the exectutive head chef in the hotel where i worked was on a grand a week before tax...so dont let the fact that they are hotel workers fool you. Once you get up the ranks, the money is excellent in decent hotels :)

I remember totalling up the cost of my music collection for insurance purposes a few years ago and found it would have cost me in excess of £30,000 to buy the CDs (inclusing karaoke CD+Gs) that I had so, yes, it would be a hell of a lot more than a couple of grand. And this was before I started buying the legal downloads!

Equipment of a couple of grand? Lets be serious here. The Martin Wizard Extreme weighs in at half that amount so that would be a very conservative figure!

& also how much is what the people you mention contribute to the day remembered compared to what we do.

I did once try a little experiment, at a subsequent function I was approached by somebody with the opening gambit of "You're Steve Jones aren't you? You DJed at my wedding" I remembered him & confirmed that it was indeed me, I also complemented him on his cake & buffet for the evening. His reply was along the lines of "I can't remember so I'll have to take your word for it, but you were good, more of the same tonight please"

Now I don't know whether the food & cake were from the same people (it didn't look anywhere near as good), but I was booked because they liked what I did at the previous function & their guests told them what a memorable night they'd had.

I wouldn't bank on it. In fact, you've probably just about nailed it. £40-50k p/a for a head chef is about right.


Besides, can you imagine what would happen if, whilst prepping 150 roast beefs with all the trimmings, someone popped their head round the door and asked if they could have chicken chasseur, followed by someone else complaining that roast beef was rubbish and could they have a thai green curry RIGHT NOW because no-one's eating the beef? Followed by two half-cut blokes balancing their pints on the edge of the deep fat fryer trying to get him to pipe "Mark loves Julie" onto a cake? ... and so on ad infinitum.
