Personally I see them as a gadget which is unneccesary but am getting pestered by my son to buy one :D :D

The only use I can see is as a photo viewer - probably wrong :o

Not an iPad user, so my opinions are worthless here on the product.

However, I have been in a meeting where the sales rep (so a DJ in our scenario) had one.
The meeting quickly turned into a gadget fest of showing off apps... It looked slick, and was treated like a baby at a family gathering - "oh, can I hold it?" lol

If you're thinking about using it to show clients gig photos, I'd think carefully about that problem. I use a battery powered Photoframe. I felt that even a laptop was prone to distractions (wifi being found pop-ups, normal computer stuff etc)

Otherwise, iPad looks well designed, very slick and also overpriced :p

Thats the thing, I have a macbookPro, Ipod, Iphone coming next week so an Ipad would 'complete' the set, but not sure if a waste of money :confused:

I defiantly wouldn't bother. Unless you want to sit on your sofa browsing the net on a big screen that's touch screen.

I'd save the £450 and take the missus to Paris for a mini break or put it towards a holiday.

My girlfriend has one, and apart from all the fun stuff you can do with it she also writes most of her articles on it. She covered an IT launch in Prague a few weeks ago. While sitting in the airport she wrote a brief article, emailed it to her editor and it was published on-line before she got back to Heathrow. She also finds it easier to carry around than her Macbook.

Again, I don't own one so my opinion is worthless. However, a couple of friends have iPad's, and what they've told me is that a) they wanted one, but didn't need it, and b) they're amazed at how much they do with it, to the point that two months in they can't live without it.

I have had a 64g 3G iPad for a few months now and its great. I use it both at home and for client meetings.

For me, the IMac's are in the office and my iPad stays at home, goes with me on holidays, goes to client meetings and I use it to fill time when im at events. I watch films on it for example whilst waiting for a dance floor etc.

For me I don't need a laptop as the iPad does everything that I need. I have an iPhone 4 as well but browsing the net on the pad is so great. For example im sat on the sofa writing this now with it just sat on my lap!

I would definately recommend getting one. I am an apple whore though, iPad, iPhone, 27"iMac!!!

I wouldn't be without one! It works great as a slick portable device that you can use as a sales tool. Battery life is incredible. A decent sized touchscreen device that can be used as a sales tool to show pictures, videos and your website, as well as take customer details. I saw plenty of sales people also using them at Plasa and BPM. I have also used it as a DMX riggers remote.

Yes it costs money, but in many comparison tests (including this months T3 magazine) blows the competition out of the water. There is a new version due out any time within the next couple of months, the last one came out in April. There have been iPad2 cases spotted at the Consumer Electronics Show currently being held in Las Vegas.

An Ipad is not a Macbook or a laptop or a phone or an Ipod. It is a mobile device. You need a Mac or a PC for it to work anyway.

I was under the impression you can browse the internet, buy apps, listen to music and watch movies?

You can do all of that on a iPhone or/and mac laptop?

I was going to buy an iPad but for the reasons I above - I decided against it. That's all I was trying to say. :)

Like you I couldn't see the use for one. I had the same opinion. It was an overgrown iPhone. Pointless.
Then I happened to be in the states and coincidentally strolled into an Apple store on launch day. My missus is still convinced it was a set-up! And I played with one, and still walked away thinking it worked well but it was an overgrown iPhone. I don't know what changed my mind, probably my weak will and it being a new shiny gadget, but at the end of the holiday I had enough spending money left and I went and bought one. The next day my flight home was delayed by two weeks because of the ash cloud. Being able to use a lightweight portable device to stay in contact with friends and family, and also keep up to date on when I could get home, and keep the kids entertained made me love the device. Now I keep finding more and more things that the iPad comes in useful for.

I would also point out that I am starting to see more and more of them in the corporate office world that I am currently spending 7.5 hours a day!

Anyway Charlie, the point of my ramblings is that yes we can, and do, all have an opinion, however until you use something in anger you cannot judge whether it is a waste of money, or whether you could recommend it to another. In the same way that I could never advise someone whether a Cortex is any good or not, I don't believe that you are in the best place to decide whether an iPad is any good if you've not a regular user of one. It's not a dig at you personally, lots of people are quick to judge something that they have no experience of, especially if it happens to be developed in Cupertino and have an Apple logo on.

The first couple of days after I bought an iPad I thought, nice but maybe a waste of money. Many months later I wouldn't be without one. I love it.

I use it for both business and pleasure. At gigs I use it for downloading requests, and I store all the client details and playlists on it etc. I also have DJ software installed and a large selection of gig tunes so it's an additional backup too. It's also used for client meetings. Images, videos and presentations are all at my fingertips with it.

It's also got all my favourite apps on it too so there's always something to keep me occupied if I have a little free time.

If only they'd make a dmx daylight app that would be the cherry on the cake.

I find the iPad strengths are its instant access ( mail/web etc) and the games and apps which seem more intuitive and fun with a finger!
I have an iMac and iPhone too - I don't play games on the iPhone so much now.
It doesn't replace the iMac or the iPhone for tasks but complements them.
I think it's one of those items I was curious about but didn't see a need for but then the wife bought it for me as a surprise - after 6 months with one it's in regular use and without it, I'd miss it.

That's one think that narks me slightly tbh. I have broadband at home feeding my computers wirelessly, fair enough, I also pay for 3 phones in my household to have internet access, I have 2 mobile broadband dongles (1 payg, one contract), now I will need another contract to get the ipad to pick up the internet :daft:

Costs me £15 a month for the 02 iPad sim that came with the iPad. That's for 2gb (I think) of data. I'm not held to any long term contract, and can cancel at any time.

That's such a subjective question. I mean, from what I've seen on here, Shaun seems like a canny bloke and there are a few others, too. But I've also seen people on the train or in Starbucks using their IPads who appear so far up their own backsides I wouldn't give them time of day.

It seems in a recent survey, most people who bought them, find that they use them more and more as time goes on, thats certainly the case with me.

I knew I wanted one, and after a few months I use it all the time still, it was never made to replace laptops, the first thing it tells you to do is plug it in to a computer!

I got the 16gb 3G version, I didn't need a large capacity one.

As for internet, Orange did a offer of 500mb for £5 a month, this is ample for me as most at when i'm at home I use wi-fi so its just for when i'm out and about. Only thing was it was a full size sim and the Ipad is a micro sim so I had to cut it down to size(scary) but it works a treat and always get a 3g connection.

All in all one of the best purchases I ever got.

Only thing was it was a full size sim and the Ipad is a micro sim so I had to cut it down to size(scary) but it works a treat and always get a 3g connection.

Dunno if anyone else has spotted it, but something that I'm noticing from the 'for' camp is people finding uses for the iPad. In otherwords they got one and are now looking for things to do with it, rather than buying one because it will forfil an existing need. It's like they are creating the need for it.
It's true that many of us here are guilty of buying things we like "Oh look, something shiny:D ", but generally with computers people will have a need and look for something that will do the job, based mainly on functionality.

An iPad will do many things, such as officey type stuff, multimedia type stuff, but a laptop will certainly do it all a lot better, purely by the fact a laptop is a full blown computer, whereas an iPad is a full blown mbile phone that can't make calls....
I'm not against them, but there are so many people who buy in to Apple for all the wrong reasons!

That all depends on the user and their needs. Think of an iPad like a toolbox. Different people will require different tools and add those tools (appz) as they go along.

What does the iPad do that the Android tablet linked to does not? (I do know that it's a different app store, but that's just about the extent of my knowledge! :D )

They are both very similar in function. Yes, they connect to different app stores and believe it or not the Samsung Galaxy Tab even lets you make voice calls from it, although you end up looking like an idiot with a tablet to your ear. "HELLO. I'M IN THE LIBRARY!"

The Apple App Store has more applications, and is more closed than the Android market place, and also seems to have more quality control.
Working for one of the launch teams in Orange has luckily given me access to a lot of the different devices we have launched. The biggest differences that I could see is that the Apple device just seems to be slicker in operation (a personal perspective). Also the Apple Apps have been developed for specific resolution screens, what I mean is that all iPhones have a specific resolution, as does the iPad. This means that all apps look crisp and clean on all devices, granted Apps developed for iPhones look low quality when shown on an iPad, but thats in comparison to the iPad apps. On the flip side Android screens come in many resolutions and flavours, so that Apps from the Android Market Place tend to always look "fuzzy" round the edges.

Another thing to bear in mind is that Google don't set a minimum required spec to run Android OS. So the majority of the lower end Android tablets not only lack the hardware to run Android properly, but the also thin out the OS and strip functionality to try and speed the tablets up.

Yes I like Apple. Yes they are expensive. However they win tests and reviews for a reason, because in the (mostly) impartial tests that have been set before them they perform the best. Also in agreement with an earlier statement, you discover something else it can do. You think "wouldn't it be great if someone brought out an app that did this" and someone nearly always has, and it just makes life a little easier again.

Because Apple have total control over the hardware and software, the user experience is slick and predictable.

If you just want to pick it up and for it to work without forcing software updates every few hours, not grind to a halt because of poorly crafted driver software or have an out-of-date operating system 10 minutes after you buy it, then Apple is the way to go.

I just bought a netbook and it has Linux which is next to useless as i cannot instal any DJ software.
Im in the process of seeing if i can get windows on it and run Serato itch but this is another option as i got it at a good price.

I would say managed better and the operating systems are different. Basically the difference between mac (Os x) and Windows. :)

"Better" is subjective of course. Some of the newer tablets have more widgets than the iPad - cameras, card slots, USB ports and so on.

But the iPad 2 is no doubt going to be announced pretty shortly and who knows what that will bring?

One thing you can be sure of with Apple products is that you're not going to be upgrading it every 5 minutes, it will always work as advertised (unless it breaks) and it will continue to receive support and updates for the next God-knows-how-many years as Apple tend to take care of the "long tail" for much longer than other OS providers.

For example, you're already seeing announcements for Android tablets that are 'pending' the v3 "Honeycomb" version of the operating system which isn't launched yet. Today's tablets are designed around v2. How many will have an upgrade path from 2 to 3? Not many!

Had a quick play with an ipad for the first time tonight and it is super slick. I would use for pleasure and as a dj backup.

I'm considering getting a 32gb with 3g when the Ipad2 comes out. Thay should cover all bases and I should have room for apps and enough music to do a whole night if needs be.

I have one for a slightly different reason. My daughter lives over a 3 hour drive from me and when I pick her up she plays with it watches movies does drawing on it ec. And when she is not with me I use it for internet a few games etc.
Yes a laptop can do it as well, yes an iphone can do most of what it can do. But no it is not a laptop or an ipone. The large screen turn it from a gadget to a device with possibility. I can type an email on my phone but the small screen makes it difficult. I can do the same on an ipad and make it easy.
Im guessing a journalist would find them very handy especially for short hand typing. SO would a photographer for checking pics on a larger screen.
I can think of many people who could benfit from one but all its functions can be done by a different device so unless you have a need then no it is an impulse buy no more or less.
But play with is a bit and look around the app store then you can find what it can really do.

I have one but my wife has nicked it. I originally bought it for presentations and for photos and videos etc. Sadly I haven't really used it and my wife has also password protected it now as well!!!!! I have seen quite a few DJ's use them at gigs as samplers, lighting desks, and KORG do some really cool little apps as well. Its a good tool! And it's got an apple on it, so that's why I had to get it!!! LOL

Just got mine yesterday and it made its first outing at a networking event last night.

People loved it just because it was an ipad. The screen quality is just amazing and the photos I was showing have never looked better! Very happy.

Another great advantage is the battery life is really very good, being able to stay awake and use for an entire gig without it running too low.

I have had one for a couple of months. Use it a lot at home. It is so fast for checking emails (rather than starting up my laptop which takes ages).

Get yourself an audio cable that goes through the dock connector rather than the headphone jack and it will sound at it's best.
I got one last week and it will be permanently installed

Djay is about the best iPad djaying app I have come across so far, in no way a replacement for traktor but you get me out of the doodoo whilst booting the spare laptop. Also good for downloading requests on the fly,

Remember to mute the iPad so the push notifications don't interrupt the music when djaying is playing

Having said that, I cant honestly say I am in a huge rush to do so either. I have my 17" laptop which does EVERYTHING I want to do. I can make phone calls from it via the phone system in the office or video calls via Skype along with all the other normal day to day PC activities.

I have a touchscreen monitor for my Virtual DJ PC but find that it isnt responsive enough, I much prefer the control and tactile feedback that I get from using my Hercules controller.

Yes you can use one for a backup, but for what you would pay for an iPad you could buy a good laptop as a backup. Comet currently have 52 laptops for less than or equal to the price of their cheapest iPad.

I quite like the look of the laptops where you can reverse the lid and close it so that it is tablet style but I done see it as a must have.

The one thing I wouldnt be without though is my 3G dongle. I have had one since Nov 2007 and it is just great to be able to use it wherever and whenever I need a connection. I actually have a mini PC installed in the car and can plug the dongle into that and listen to internet radio whilst travelling and the kids can also plug their laptops into the PC and share that connection.

Maybe I will change my view after I see one. Im hoping to go to Norwich this weekend so might go into the Apple Store and have a look. I guess peoples views are also strongly influenced by whether or not they are already in the MAC camp. The only Apple items I own are two iPods.

Like I said, I havent tried one so cant condemn it, Apple have sold an awful lot of them so they must do something right but at the moment I dont see what it can offer me that I cant already do.

I had a play with it the other day, just as fast as Ipad 2, but uses andriod. Planning to get one once there allowed to be sold again

I was surprised Apple won after all other "tablets" have been on the market for awhile, only difference I can see between the SGT and the others is that the SGT is very good, slick and quick.

Exactly that. You can, I think, get leads so you can charge at the same time too but given the iPad lasts circa 10 hours I didn't see that as a necessity

Just thrashed out a deal with my wife, she gets the ipad for everyday use and I get to use it at gigs :D .

One question though, what is it like to network and transfer files from a lappy running Windows?

you have to use itunes to put music on an ipad, i find it a pain so dont tend to bother. i think in total there are 10 songs on my ipad but never use it for music anyway

andriod tablets are much easier to transfer music onto, just connect to pc via usb, then drag & drop the files

not sure about music or video, but i use dropbox to get documents & pdf files onto mine.

i have a Synology NAS drive which i can use with their ipad software to stream music or view photos from, but i dont think i can actually transfer them with it

I'm going to get the 60gB one and as well as music and photo's I would like to be able to back up important network files such as my accounts data files, also I would like to save the Traktor .nml playlist files on it.
