I'm firing on all Cylinders...Fantastic Feedback...Phone constantly ringing.....enjoying every minuite of every gig!!!;);) ;)

Is this because I have changed my Girlfriend over Christmas....I'm not sure.

The Debate is ....

Is it unprofessional to let your personal circumstances change your performance in a negative or positive way??

Have you ever let this happen to you??

Have you ever let a Bereavement or Birth affect your performance???

How good are you at covering your emotions???

One of my good/bad traits is that very few things really bother me so it has never been an issue.

Only one gig springs to mind and that was due to something happening at the event with other entertainment booked by the client however I received email feedback praising me for my performance.

Life is a play and we all play a part
The Lover, the Dreamer, the Clown
The Dreamer and Lover are always in tears
The Clown spreads sunshine around
The life with a smile is the life worthwhile
The Clown till the curtain comes down

Even though you're only make believing
Laugh, Clown, laugh!
Even though something inside is grieving
Laugh, Clown, laugh!
Don't let your heart grow too mellow
Just be a real Punchinello, fellow

You're supposed to brighten up a place
And laugh, Clown, laugh!
Paint a lot of smiles around your face
And laugh, Clown, don't frown
Dressed in your best coloured humour
Be a pallietto and laugh, Clown, laugh!

I don't see how it could affect you, I mean I'm not gonna play Radiohead instead of Alexandra Burke because I was dumped by a bird!

Mum died on feb 19th 2004.
Still did my gig on the next day for a 90 year old lady, she was someones mum too.

I had a few tears when playing congratulations as mum was a big Cliff fan and then got on with the job in hand.

I don't let my emotions interfere with my job as a DJ, but when I first got together with my current partner I did start taking less bookings so I could have some Saturday nights to spend with her, so whilst my personal circumstances have never affected how I am they have had an impact on it.

I try not to let things get to me but (despite what some people may think of me on this forum), I am sometimes an emotional person.
When it comes to personal stuff (girlfriends etc...well, when I had girlfriends, I'm married now but you know what I mean?), I try my hardest to just get on with it, put on a brave face and do the job.

However.... (and this thread is perfect timing...or should I say, bad timing?), this weekend I had to get Mike (Ecstatic Events) to cover a party for me as I just could not face it. I don't mean to get all sad and stuff but last tuesday I went away with the missus and the dogs to North Devon for a break. It was our first break since our honeymoon nearly 7 years ago. We were there 2 days and then I got a call from my brother saying that my Dad had been rushed to hospital. He actually died but was revived by paramedics after suffering a heart attack. I rushed home and straight to the hospital where it didn't look good....Doctors gave him an hour to live at the time.

I just couldn't face DJing on saturday night as I was gutted. Been up the hospital as much as I can and have been in bits and the last thing I wanted to do was to try and put on a happy face. Anyway, he's recovering now and the Doctors can't believe how much he has improved so it's pretty good at the moment. I would have hated it if I was DJing and then got the call to say the worst had happened and I couldn't of been there for the rest of the family.

I agree that sometimes you have to get on with it but everyone is different aren't they? Fingers crossed all is ok from now on.

Have you ever let a Bereavement or Birth affect your performance?

A couple of years ago my dad was killed in a car accident on a Thursday and I had gigs on the Friday (40th Birthday Party) and Saturday (Wedding). I luckily managed to get the Friday gig covered (as I had to identify the body). This is the one and only time I've had to contact a client to tell them that I couldn't be there but had secured them cover. The next day (Saturday) was business as usual. The Bride had booked me to provide her with a fantastic wedding and there was no way I was going to let her down. I put my problems to the back of my head as much as I could and got on with the job.

How good are you at covering your emotions?

I think I'm pretty good, but I guess it has to effect you. No matter how much of a brave face you put on, if there are extreme circumstances which would affect your mind-set and mood then it would be really difficult for it not to affect your performance in some way. We're not machines after all. I think as long as you do your best for the customer then that's the best you can do. I guess we're kind of lucky in the job we do in as much as we can (if need be) hide behind the equipment and music to some extent. That wedding I had a million and one things running through my head between making announcements and selecting songs. I just smiled and worked through it.

That's an amazing story Shaun, and shows exceptional dedication. I honestly have no idea where you found the strength to go to work that Saturday. I'm not certain I could, or would want to. I'd say a bereavement like that is one of the few circumstances where it's ok to sub something out at the last minute.

I have a hunch that if you spoke to the people who have departed beforehand they wouldn't want you to collapse and would prefer you to cover your commitments:confused:

I have an elderly Mother...We are really open with each other.Wonder if its worth discussing now??

I'm sure you're right, Martin, but circumstances differ. The culmination of a long illness is entirely different to the situation Shaun has described, and in that situation, though my head would scream "K.B.O.", my heart wouldn't let me. That's why I expressed such admiration for Shaun's dedication -clearly a very strong man with tremendous integrity.

Or is just a Scotsman that can't bear the thought of losing more than one days wage! :d

Joking aside, thank you for the kind comments. In hindsight I don't think the client would have minded me subbing the work out in the circumstances. The event was quite an intricate one anyway, which involved quite a bit of pre-planning to meet the specifications she required. Had I subbed it out it would possibly mean that certain aspects of requirements wouldn't be met due to the close proximity of the event. Rather than let her down on any aspect I made the decision to forge ahead and deal with the situation as best as I could. My better half roadied with me that night which helped a great deal.

On a lighter note, and directed to one of Martin's comments about having a conversation with him Mum. I remember joking with my dad a few years prior to his passing. I told him that when and if he ever decides to 'pop his cloggs' to try do it on a Monday, so it doesn't interfere with any gigs. He saw the funny side of it and said he'd try his best. :d

like everyone else , my best wishes to gary

I remember when we first started we had a party booked, and my 16yr old daughter went into labour at dinner time, i spent most of the afternoon at the hospital, leaving at the last minute to go and set up(to a gig over an hour away), it was a nightmare for me, and I was slightly on edge most of the night until I got a text message saying everything was fine, my son was fine and just carried on has if nothing was going on, but i did not enjoy the night until I had the all clear:)

Gary, all the best for you and your Dad. My Dad "assists" me in the day job, and though he can be a :muppet: at times, I don't know what I'd do without him, enjoy them while you can.

Shaun, well done that man. Even though most of us can "assume the persona" as soon as the first track cues, even if we're a bit grumpy, I'm not sure how many of us would have the mettle to behave as you did. I take my hat off to you.

Re timing Shaun, my Mum suffered a long and debilitating illness, but managed to survive Christmas and New Year before shuffling off this mortal coil. We have friends whose parents died at Christmas, and it doesn't half put a damper on the season. :(

Blimey, bit maudlin, eh? I'd better go off and find a thread where I can interject a childish, humorous pointless and facile comment quickly, or I'll be getting a reputation as being too serious.
