this is my longest ever post, but i needed to vent it...lol,

I was djing at a wedding with lots of bells and whistles on sunday night, they had a swing band, table magician, Elvis tribute act, wii machine and disco and that was just the night time party.

Elvis was a suprise for the groom (big fan) and had been told he could use the in-house P/A The plan was to get the happy couple up on the floor at 10.30pm to "viva las vegas" and then cut it dead while they're dancing and explain how big a fan etc the groom is and wouldnt it be more fitting to have it sang live ...so direct from memphis...etc

but when it came to the time, the nod i was waiting for from the room mgr to let me know elvis was ready etc didn't come, and the bride was keep looking over at me and waving her hands around, then her mother appeared so i pointed her to the room manager, a few seconds later i heard a booming voice "well make it work" ! the elvis backing tracks disc wouldn't play ... she re-appeared at my booth and said - "just play elvis - now" with the bride and groom dancing half way thru the song the room mgr asks me to try it through my system ? so i quickly load the disc and press play and away it goes (thank god) so i managed to fade out the song fade in the backing cd, while introducing the artist with the room manager breathing down my neck, the bride and mother staring daggers at me.

throughout the show i had to pause his tracks when he asked and cue up/play songs at his request while he talked in between etc. i made 1 mistake, i set the wrong track away playing and he made a joke of it, the bride came over and said "concentrate" really loud !

the set was an hour long and when he finished i had to start my djing set straight away so i didnt get a chance to speak to anyone until the very end... she couldn't appologise enough when she found out i had saved the day!

That's the problem when you do favours, isn't it? Not everyone realises that you are doing a favour and trying to make the best of the situation. They immediately assume that it's you who's mucked it up in the first place!

At least she had the decency to apologise to you, but how many of the guests went away thinking it was your fault?

I had it once with a drag act.

They gave me a CD with track listing and detailed notes of which track to play and when. All well and good...but the CD tracks didnt correspond with the listing.

First wrong track comes on and the act makes a joke and takes the mick...until I pick up the microphone and give as good as I got ;)

I had similar problems at a Wild West Theme party. They had a Cowboy doing Lassos, whip cracking, knife throwing, line dancing etc. I had the same thing, play this track when he does this, that track when he does that....

I find it a bloody cheek to be honest with you that these artists expect us to dj for them for free when they are probably getting paid more for 45 minutes than than we are for 5 hours.

What do they do when they have a gig where there is no DJ?

I had a similar problem but with the World Arm Wrestling Federation Championship, but not such luck as getting out of it with just a brush off, it was on live TV I played the Russians music instead of the US music when the US fighter came out then it all went off and the wrestlers started shouting at me and the camera got turned to me and I thought I was going to get killed lol, was like a jerry springer moment. The wrestler at the end came over and said it was just for TV but I didn't know that and was terrified at the time.

It was however not my fault it was the person who made the CD for the event I was just a button pusher at the end of the day..

Had this happen a number of times when venues promise the world and then cant deliver.
A simple thing of showing a slide show presentation of images to the kids at a prom on a big screen TV via laptop.... naturally this powerpoint has audio as teachers think they are IT bods...

But no1 spared a thought as to how the audio from a little laptop will project into a crowd of say 200 young people!!!

In steps the kind DJ offering the play it through our system. However due to the location of the screen & audio source i didnt have a lead long enough... so they played it through the wireless mic from the laptop ... it actually sounded ok!

But another example of Dj saving the day as the audio really made it.

Unless told in advance I won't let anybody "hook" into my system, whether it be a band or another act with a CD. I'd just tell them that I'm digital and don't have the facility to play CD's.

It may sound harsh but it's not my problem. I'm there to fulfil my contractual obligations and nobody Else's. Looking at the experiences from other in this thread I'm so thankful I have (and follow through) with this policy.

So, you're at a wedding and the bride and groom have paid for this act. You're the only one who can play the tracks. Would you seriously refuse?

Absolutely! The bride and groom have no way of knowing whether I can play CD's or not. I've had enough problems over the years of people handing me CD's that skip and jump to not take the chance anymore.

So would I refuse? Well, I wouldn't say "I refuse". I'd say I don't have the facility to play CD media, but had I been informed prior I could have facilitated their request. Problem solved. And I wouldn't think twice about it. At the end of the day the only person that would look bad is that act that arrived without the means to provide the entertainment he was booked for.

i have had these situations a bit recently.

When i get handed a CD on the day with a change of plan my brain immediately says check check and check again.
A first dance is vital to the bride and groom and most of the crowd.
If that is screwed up you will never get the respect from the bride and groom and the crowd for the whole night.

It is irrelevant if its your fault or not. It is annoying when you get the blame for someone elses :Censored: up however.
If there is going to be a risk of failure I would not agree to it in the first place and explain why.

I did this once when I had a laptop break on me. Not funny.
Now I always:

- always download a hard copy on the laptop.
- check that the tracks are correct with the bride (or in this case the groom).
- check timings and give warnings to the crowd.
- coordinate when and what and where so everyone who needs to know knows.

The main thing is when I do an entrance and a group of divs stand in the doorway :D

perfect example of bad planning on Sat.
I had thrown up twice and set up anyway trying to smile and look normal.
I was not in my normal super efficient manner.

basically the girls mum wanted to bring out a cake and then sing happy birthday.
The owner (on the other side of the room out of view in the kitchen) thought it was the other way round so they were left standing there like lemons for a few mins.

Had i been more with it i would had planned it with them and worked out what when and where as i do at every other event.

Worked out ok in the end and they did not seem to notice either :)

I know of a few DJ's that use digital media players and don't have the provision at all to play CD's. What would they do in that circumstance?

Should we plan ahead for all possibilities and situations where other entertainers might need to hook into our system? I think not. I'm sorted for any situation I might find myself in...not others. :)

Each to their own.

I'm flexible, easy going and want to please & help where possible. I think a positive 'can do' attitude is essential. Folk would really appreciate you going the extra mile and playing that CD instead of potentially ruining their evening and wasting their cash.

It's human error. Brides can't think/worry about everything. I doubt 'how will the act play his CD' ever crossed her mind.

So you think I don't have a "positive can do attitude"? How little you know me. Anyone that knows me knows how helpful I am and can be. I will not however have people 'presume'!

If there's another act that may want to hook into my system then tell me in advance so I can discuss the arrangements with them one to one. Springing it on me at the last minute won't get you anywhere.

I now refuse to play any external media from "punters" and will only consider it if the bride asks in which case I would explain pitfalls.

You wouldnt want to keep them as a "what if"

I have the cd drive on the laptop and at a recent wedding the bride on the night gave me a cd of the second song to be played after the first dance. This was a recording of her and all her mates singing "I'm every woman". I would of felt terrible not being able to play it despite my stance on this subject.

Goes to show some of us are not just DJ's but quite often event managers and master of ceremony.
That can only come from experience and sometimes just simply experimenting with an idea that "makes the evening"
That justifies our prices IMO.

I'm 100% in agreement with that.

When I do a wedding I'm prepared to do anything and everything that has been discussed and agreed beforehand, that way what happens is within my control because I've prepared for it, as Shaun says, it may sound harsh but it's not my problem and reading this thread has reinforced that.

If they patch into your system at the last minute with something you haven't checked beforehand who then ends up looking bad if it doesn't work? However, if it's not coming from your system and you are not involved then it isn't you who looks bad.

Nobody's probably listening to me any more :o but FWIW
I will NEVER put anything a punter brings into the laptop. However I do carry a variety of leads with me and if an act turns up with no playout I suggest they ask the venue if they can find a suitable player, and plug it into my mixer.

I agree absolutely with Shaun. I provide a full set-up, appropriate for me to deliver the performance that I am contractually obliged to, and any other contracted entertainer should do the same.

As it happens, I don't carry a CD player any more, so couldn't oblige anyway.

I don't let other entertainers use my gear unless agreed in advance and at the other entertainer's complete risk (ie if my system has problems playing their CDs it's not my fault - my system plays pretty much everything that's thrown at it!).

However, I did provide a sound system once for a drag duo act. They provided their backing tracks on CD - all recorded and labelled correctly and in the right order. So, what was the problem, I hear you all ask? Well, we were sharing a small-ish raised stage which was pretty much hollow underneath. These two guys were stamping around in their high heels and resulting shock caused the CD to keep skipping. Back in those days, anti-shock CD technology wasn't great! They were trying to make wisecracks of it but it was getting annoying. However, what was more annoying was this arrangement was a last minute thing. If the venue had informed me prior to the gig I would have happily contacted the act and asked them to provide their music on mini-disc which would have solved the problem. I would have even copied to tracks to MDisc for them! I wasn't given enough/any prior notice so this wasn't an option.

Quite right. Can you imagine turning up at a gig and asking the band if you wire through in to their amp or sound system? I'm pretty sure you'd get told where to get off!

So, you're at a wedding and the bride and groom have paid for this act. You're the only one who can play the tracks/CD Would you seriously refuse? If you refused, the act would have to leave, potentially ruining the B&G's evening?

This is why people take such liberties. It's because we're always the ever-accommodating link in the entertainment. He was an Elvis Tribute act, quite probably getting paid more than DJ for less work. Why didn't he have his own gear rather than counting on the venue's? It's absolutely crazy!

I disagree.

You disagree that only person that would look bad is that act that arrived without the means to provide the entertainment he was booked for? Again, I refer you to my earlier comment (see below), which incidentaly will be the situation I'm in when I take out the CD drawers from my flightcase.

I know of a few DJ's that use digital media players and don't have the provision at all to play CD's. What would they do in that circumstance?

With the above in mind would you still say the DJ is to blame for not being able to play the digital media? I also don't carry mini disc player or turntables, I hate to think how much I would be to "blame" if I couldn't play any of those formats should a third party act bring them along in future. :d

You wouldn't want to keep them as a "what if"

If I'm completely honest I've been contemplating removing the CD drawers for a while. My flightcase is too tall which means I cannot use the top shelf on my DSBP. Which means I have to sit the flightcase on it's lid on the lower shelf....by doing so the flightcase lid buckles slightly. I can solve these situations by removing the things in my case which are no longer in use and moving to a smaller flightcase (i.e...removing the CD drawers and the switching unit for my lighting).

There will never be a what if situation with regards to CD's and the provision of entertainment I provide. For that reason (as mentioned earlier) I don't carry turntables, mini disc players, tape decks, 78 RPM gramophones or 8 track players. None of them relate to the media I use to carry out the provision of the entertainment I'm hired to provide. So I don't really understand why I would need to carry playout devices for media I don't use?

Amen to that. I am not bailing another act out, unless I know them or they have arranged it before hand or its a genuine act of god. If they are disorganised or just expect its not going to happen.

I had a girl storm out of an X Factor style talent contest at the Casino when her backing track would not play. Shouting all sorts she was. The manager came over and I explain, it plays CD's and it plays CD's with MP3 files on it, it also plays everyone elses backing tracks, I wonder who's fault it is? Manager laughed and we carried on.

I avoid being put in the position where a finger can be pointed. I have enough on my plate keeping my own :Censored: together without worrying about someone elses.

It has to though!

You have to be able to act and think on the spot. Some people are rude and ignorant. Let them get on with it.

As long as people aren't abusing or damaging your gear - I don't see the issue with playing a bloody CD.

Most acts won't think to contact the DJ before. It's such a 'no brainer' (in my eyes)..it's a CD player...they aren't taking your van for a spin!

I always make a subtle comment on the microphone beforehand. Explain what's happening and that you are taking on a new role as 'roadie for the act' (for example)

People will know who's fault it is.

Thats because you are just a sappy DJ not a proper act. Oh and you then prove it by rolling over and licking your bottom!

It really doesn't though, Charlie. If it's only playing a bloody CD, the act should bring a bloody CD player.....and a bloody PA to hook it up to. Alternatively, with notice, and an appropriate consideration, he can hook it up to mine. If he expects me to bend over on the night, he'll be sorely disappointed...and if that leaves our mutual client disappointed with the other guys performance, or lack thereof, then that is entirely down to him.

I can be extremely flexible and accomodating, but tell me in advance. I can then contact the third party act and discuss their requirements. 'Presumption' doesn't sit well with me.

Exactly - I always ask as a matter of course if there is going to be any other entertainment booked, and if there is get their number and contact them well beforehand. It's surprising how many people forgot to mention these things unless prompted.

Who spoiled it? I leave my number with the function organiser and always check what else might be happening and try to co-ordinate.

Act of god I can deal with, presumption I don't. Had an Elvis acts Senny G1 mic pack in when we were working with him. Happens! Senny Mic and cable supplied with thanks and plugged into his desk. That is saving the day. Having him turn up with no mic would have been no mate you're having a giraffe.

You're saying that presumption has to sit well with DJs? Rubbish.

Again, I provide the means for me to carry out the work I'm contractually binded to. I can't and won't be responsible for any third party requirements that may or may not ever arise.

Charlie, do you carry a mini disc player or turntable? What if an act appeared with a mini disc or a 12" white label pressing that he needed to carry out the show. Would you be slightly miffed if they presumed that you would have the facilities to play them and you didn't?

One good thing has come out of this thread though. By removing the CD players from my system I'll never be in that type of situation in future. :)

Yes I would. The Mic is mine and I know it works faultlessly.I would however instruct them on the proper usage of the Mic to eliminate the potential of feedback etc. Which is different to being handed a CD full of tracks that you don't know would work flawlessly or not.

Some of the comments on here are OTT.

Kicking up a fuss and moaning - Okay, if you must.

Turning an act away because you're awkward - Certainly not okay.

Some of you guys sound a bit 'rigid'

You need to be on your feet, quick thinking, open to ideas, easy to get along with, 'can do attitude' - 'yes, not a problem mate.' blah blah blah.

One lesson I have learnt (I think it's vital) is to lick people's :Censored: I'm not suggesting everyone should be a push over but if you're easy to get along with and 'welcome' last minute change (whether you want to or not)...people will remember and eventually, you will get a good name for yourself.

I think people are imagining different scenarios here and possibly debating at cross purposes. Some thinking of just playing a CD, some supplying a back-line for an act when there is a fault, some a back-line for when the act hasn't been bothered to bring one etc etc.

The more experienced people have obviously had occasions where it's all gone wrong and they've had the finger pointed at them when it's no fault of theirs.
People lucky enough never to have this are thinking how they can save the day.

I don't think there is a stock answer, it all depends on the night and on the particular scenario - then we use our skill, judgement and experience to decide what we do.

Okay, here we go.....

I didn't say I'd need the CD in the post a week in advance, please read back my earlier comments before you start putting words in my mouth.. I said I would need to speak to them [and I quote] "in advance so I can discuss the arrangements with them one to one". That discussion would include them making sure the media worked flawlessly and in the correct order etc. I don't have a problem with people handing me CD's as long as I know in advance and it isn't presumed that I would be ok with them just turning up and expecting it to be ok with me. That said though, I do not let anyone hook into my system whether it's by prior arrangement or not. I've heard to many horror stories to go down that route.

No. I'll be busy doing what I'm hired to do. My job isn't to screen the third party acts music to make sure it's suitable. If he brings his own gear there won't be an issue and no need for me to carry out any additional tasks that aren't related to the job I'm hired to do.

Yes and no.

It's life and we have to live and move on. As I've already said....if the audience and B&G know you're not to blame beforehand, what's the issue. Is it really impossible to make a joke out of a awkward situation?

I played one tune (foolishly) on NYE. It cleared the dancefloor. Literally, 100 people were dancing away and everyone went back to their seats.

Initially, I went bright red and my heart raced. Counted to ten seconds and turned the music down before saying 'Well, that one went down well. I leave the headphones with her majesty for a matter of seconds and look what happens. *cue look behind look me so everyone can see the picture of her behind me...they laugh with a brief round of applause before I let Status Quo do it's ting.

What's my point? If it were to go wrong (small chance if the act has checked it beforehand) make a joke of it and swiftly move on.

Honestly, that situation would never arise because I wouldn't accept that the comedian hadn't brought any gear. I'd like to think that my ability to plan is sufficient to ensure there would be no nasty surprises on the night.

I think a lot of the talk of flexibility and ego is a little wide of the mark. I can't speak for others, but I'm a flexible and accommodating guy. Charlie, lets hope you never have a singer turn up unexpectedly, pass you a backing CD, ask where to plug his mic in - and then proceed to have feedback problems and a skipping CD, and every one blames you. It's not a nice situation to be in, and believe me, a few cheeky comments on the mic doesn't get you out of everything. You can bet the singer will totally blame you because they want their full fee, they're not going to own up to doing anything wrong, and once you agree to play their CD and let them use your gear, it's all down to you.

Obviously, as much as possible everyone tries to be helpful and cooperative to other entertainers and tries to make things go smoothly, but sometimes it's just not a good idea.

Im very selective over who i let plug into my pa, i will let solo singers, comics, magic acts etc but not full bands as i dont believe my pa will handle that kind of thrashing. In the cases that i do let people plug in, i insist they bring their own mixer and play out and i will give them a line into my mixer and they can operate their own equipment, so basically i just give them volume. When their on stage they are responsible for their own sound quality, track order etc.

Playing cd's which are given to me on the night depends on many factors. If the organiser asks me to play a track or 2, and its possible for me to do so, i will. If a punter asks me its a definate no. I use 2 technics 1210's and serato for gigging so people can see i cant accomodate cd's, what most dont know is that if i load a cd into my laptop drawer i can play it in serato from there.

I dont think dj's should be operating acts cd's, minidiscs etc or mixing their sound for them.

I have a mate in a band who charges comics, singers and dj's etc to use his pa and lighting. He says that he has invested thousands in his gear so why should the act reap the benefits of a pa and light show that they have not worked hard to pay for. In his words 'why should i make them look good'.

Horses for courses i suppose.

You may have a point. Lying or bending the truth is never good. I think I'll take out the CD decks for my HD2500 from my system tomorrow, as I've never used them since I went digital. Then if anyone asks me to play a CD I won't be lying when I tell them I can't. Problem solved. To be honest I don't know why I added them.

I have no facilities for CD's either as both my gig PC machines have the CD drives disabled. This suites both me and the computers as they have one less device to worry about and I dont have any problems when asked to play other peoples cd's.

I also dont want the hassle of doing other peoples jobs. Im there to do MY job and thats it. I will gladly help out where I can but wont make my equipment look foolish when a customers or other entertainers cd fails.

Im very selective over who i let plug into my pa, i will let solo singers, comics, magic acts etc but not full bands as i dont believe my pa will handle that kind of thrashing.

Playing cd's which are given to me on the night depends on many factors. If the organiser asks me to play a track or 2, and its possible for me to do so, i will.

.

Exactly

Charlie, for what it's worth,I am on your side on this one.
With a little bit of care and attention any problems should be sorted before they perform.
Frankly, why any singer would want to go thro a disco mixing desk baffles me.My experience of singers has seen mixing desks with more nobs than you could shake a stick at.

I'm not going to get drawn into the wrongs or rights, or whether or not you should be accommodating to acts that have essentially turned up without their own equipment expecting to use yours.

All I'll say is I only have the facility to play MP3s & WAVs. If anyone else is expecting any other media to be used, they really ought to check first. We have the facility, but it would involve bringing extra kit.

Patching into my mixer is nigh on impossible once my rig is fully set up, & once fully set up, the only time it's coming apart again is at the end, or (god forbid) if I develop a technical hitch that needs sorting.

Off topic somewhat, but also relevant to a point. I don't know if a virus can affect the processor etc in a HD 2500 (it is in essence computer equipment), & I don't want to find out the hard way mid gig, would any of the accommodating digital DJs allow an unknown HD or flash drive to be connected to their playout device?

No self respecting entertainer would turn up without the equipment to fufill their contract unless they have been told that there will be supplied playout equipment.
In which case its a communication issue and if you are doing your job in the correct manner you would make sure prior to the event that you are informed.

In the case of the OP the singer was told he could use the inhouse system. It was obviously an inhouse problem and it would have been clear that the DJ was saving the day by using his decks.
I doubt that the guests put any blame on the DJ and lets be fair that one incident probably didnt make one iota of difference to the night.

Well, firstly I think it's good that the 'Stressed Bride' that the OP mentioned in his post actually bothered to apologise. Her head was probably allover the place, thinking that her perfect day was about to be spoilt....BUT, the Elvis act was nothing to do with the Disco was it!!?

At the end of the day, she booked the Elvis guy seperately and I'm guessing he was around the same price as the Disco? It's his business and he was not organised properly and once again, the DJ comes to the rescue.

I don't carry CD Players with me anymore. I have VDJ on the laptop so by using the laptop it means I have the drive on there should I need it. It's not always there though as I now have complete faith in the Denon HD2500. I did a wedding last year and the Brides father was/is a DJ in Basingstoke too. He came up casually around 5 minutes before the first dance and said "Here you go Gary, this is a surprise". He wanted me to play a CDR that had a song on it so that he could dance with his daughter. He was very surprised when I said that I had no way of playing it and then looked even more surprised when he saw my kit. He panicked for a while and mentioned that it was quite an obscure track and he doubted if I had it......I can't remember what it was now but a quick search of the database and there it was!

The hotel did have a ghetto blaster though that he could have borrowed but it's not the point really is it? That's just an example of people taking it for granted that we all still use CD's and don't move along with the times.

The OP's scenario is also a classic example of US getting someone else out of the stink. Someone else that has been booked as a professional, someone else that has been booked seperately too. The Bride obviously got stressed and without being her, it's hard to comment on what I'd have been like had it been me in her situation but I'll say now that I would never had been rude at all. If something is going downhill and someone else is trying to help get the situation rectified, I would have really appreciated it.

The person that I would've been stressed with would've been the Elvis guy!
Glad it got sorted.

...and for the record...I can't imagine the likes of Shaun being anything but helpful so for people to assume that he wouldn't want to help is a bit low.

Not if it all goes :Censored: up because their cd they gave you wasnt properly prepered and checked before hand and it buggers up. You will be remembered for the wrong reasons because people will assume its your fault and you will be the one they stare at if it skips or the tracks are in the wrong order.

I have a 'can do attitude' and will help where I can. I wont however compromise my job I am paid to do or the equipment.

All the DJ's at www.ardsleyentertainments.co.uk really don't mind if bands, speakers, comedians and the like want to plug into their equipment. Every PA system we send out is big enough and flexible enough to cope with most eventualities (3-3.5KW) and we generally will have the right cables to help people to connect. We'll also manage the sound and mix levels so the sound system performs well.

People are also very welcome to bring CD's, media sticks or Mini Disks.

Why does that read like a plug to prospective customers rather than a contribution to a forum discussion?

Out of curiosity, seeing as you clearly take lots of stuff for a 'just in case' scenario that has nothing to do with your disco, and presumably have had this sort of thing happen on numerous occasions, how do you deal with the 'problems' that arise (such as those that have been detailed in this thread)?

I still don't agree. Nobody wants to be made a fool of but I would rather take that gamble than jeopardise the B&Gs happiest and probably most expensive day of their life.

Playing a CD, whether it goes wrong or not, really isn't a big deal IMO.

The comedian I hired for a B&G works for big corporate events, on cruise ships etc. (Somehow, I managed to track him down after seeing him in the med.)

People like him don't own sound systems etc. They are used to handing the tech guys a CD.

If a fellow entertainers has set up and his equipment fails I wouldn't stand back. Of course I'd help him out. I've had many a phone call from local lads over the years in a panic because a piece of equipment isn't working and I'm always happy to help. Anyone that knows me knows that I'll come to anyone's aid.

However. If a :muppet: turns up presuming that I'll let him hook into my system then that's another story. It all boils down to that word again "PRESUMPTION". It's a big pet hate of mine.

I can imagine me turning up at a wedding that's employed a band as well as myself. In walks me with my Denon, a lead to hook into their system and a pair of headphones. "Hey mate, plug that in for me good chap". I can imagine the looks I'd get.

I used to think like that Martin, then I turned up to provide a disco at a Wedding and had it dropped on me last minute that they had a 90's chart act turning up to sing a few songs, and that they would be using my PA. No problem thought I, and was a little excited as I remembered the act as being very good, and quite attractive!
Then the problems started!
1. She didn't turn up in time to do a soundcheck
2. Had 2 CDs with backing tracks, but had no idea what was what or where
3. Was alternatively, extremely nervous and quiet, and over-confident and doing everything at a hundred miles an hour.
4. Gave me a playlist, and the changed it twice before we started.
5. Complained that the backing track was too quiet, halfway through the first song, and tutted loudly on the microphone. Then blamed me for playing the wrong track, which I didn't. and had the audience laugh at my incompetence!
6. Blamed me again, because she missed her cue, and then did the cut-throat thing, and made the audience laugh again before re-starting the track and coming in again, in the wrong place.
Basically she was off her face, and blaming me for her incompetence, despite the fact I was doing her a favour! I also found out later that she was paid a grand for her 15 minutes! 4 times what I was getting, yet I had to provide her with the equipment to sing, and take the flack. Will it ever happen to me again? Not on your Nelly.

Just as a slight aside: I have two close relatives - one a singer and one a comedian.

When they were doing purely shows / theatre, etc then they didn't have their own PA (other than their own mics), but when they decided to also take on private bookings, the first thing they did was go out any buy their own PA

That doesn't make me look bad it means I'm sensible. I have downloaded tunes onto my iphone during gigs at the b&gs request and lent plugs, cables etc to bands but the line has to drawn somewhere. I refused a random lady who wanted to sing at a recent gig as a) not sure whether the b&g would like it and b) I wasn't confident that I could make it sound good enough. Tough on her but I don't look bad to the audience and my clients.

Charlie, are you still in the silly season or what?
No disrespect to you at all mate but you still have a fair bit to learn by the looks of it.
You mentioned elsewhere in this thread that it doesn't hurt to lick someone's backside now and then...WHAT!!?? I certainly would never do that.
You have also mentioned that some are spoiling someone's happiest day of their lives because they don't want to be helpful, flexible etc...
(Do you think that your 'screaming Mackies' that made people feel ill helped make someone's function a great one?).

I don't mean to single you out mate but your thoughts on this subject stand out above everyone elses.

Think of it like this.....

YOU are booked to provide Disco Entertainment at someone's wedding. You have agreed a price etc (let's say it's £300.00 for example). You've met the Bride & Groom beforehand, gone through their expectations for the evening etc and got your timings sorted. Everything is cool and you know what is expected of you.

Meanwhile....

Mr Elvis impersonator has been booked aswell by the Bride & Groom. Let's say (again for example), at a price of £300.00.

Now, if I were in this situation, one of the things I would find out straight away at the meeting before the function is how things are going to work.
Is the Elvis guy bringing his own P.A.? (If not, and he wants to go through my system, there will be an extra charge).
Is he bringing his backing tracks and if so, what format? (MP3, CD, USB Stick etc)...

Now, if I had all of the details and everything was more or less sorted in advance, I would do everything I could in order to help the Bride & Groom out. I'd inform them that everything was cool.

IF the Elvis guy turned up on the night with a CD of his backing tracks and it skipped and jumped on the CD Players...would that be my fault?
IF the Elvis guy didn't have any other discs...would that be my fault?
IF the Bride kicked off at me because she THOUGHT it was my fault, do you think I would be happy and just take her anger? NO!

Everything that could be done to help out, I would do and I am sure everyone else on here would aswell.

As someone else said, people PRESUME or ASSUME too much. If I had not received any contact whatsoever from the Elvis guy (when it would be me that would be helping him out by letting him go through my system), then any inconvenience caused is down to HIM surely?

"Here's the CD of my backing tracks Mr DJ"
"Er...I'm sorry mate but I don't use CD Players. If you had contacted me you would have known that. Do you have another format at all?"
"Erm...No. I'm sorry I don't".
"Well, you're pretty screwed then aren't you mate. Do you want to explain to the Bride?"

Imagine that!

I think the main thing here is communication. If Mr Elvis had contacted me in advance and said "Look, I am doing a performance at one of your gigs. Would you mind me going through your system if I supply you with the backing tracks on CD?"....I wouldn't have a problem.

I know it's harsh but sometimes people have such a laid back attitude to stuff (oh, the DJ will sort it) that they need teaching a lesson sometimes. That may sound bad but why should we (DJ's) take the grief from someone like the OP did?

Just my opinion. Not sure why I mentioned the pricing to be honest. Probably because going by the scenario I have described, it would appear that Mr Elvis had a pretty 'slap dash fly by the seat of your pants' attitude and presumed or assumed too much....and he paid for it.

We are paid extraordinary amounts of money :sofa: (compared to my Day-Job anyway) to cope with the vagaries a hectics night entertainment can throw at you.If this is one of the aspects that make it a red-letter day for the paying client then i'm happy to get involved.A good Comic/Band/Dancing Troupe can make your evening an awful lot easier. You're probably not going to have met them before so why not take everyone on face value(as I do on here) and be positive with them from the beginning.:) :) :)

Charlie, you're talking as if it's something I've already done. I merely answered a hypothetical question.

However, as I'll be juggling my flightcases and removing the CD player the hypothetical situation in regards to myself and CDs will never be an issue.

Job done. Sorted.

Which is pretty silly IMO.

Surely it's handy to have the CD players in there?

What about if the bride turned up on the day with a CD for you to play? etc etc

I posted so that anyone who stumbled across this thread via Google might not think that all DJ's are unhelpful and inflexible.

Honestly, some of the posts make DJ's look quite unpleasant.

Yes, we do have people connecting up to our stuff quite regularly. In fact, when asked, we encourage them to do so. The kit we provide is high quality, modern and clean so it sounds and looks right. I know my way around a full PA blindfold, so why not?

Also, two sets of PA in a venue looks untidy and we think its is best avoided wherever possible. Otherwise, you're adding to problems such as the 'entertainer' packing away whilst you work - very unprofessional.

As an example, just a few weeks ago, I had the whole of the Everley Pregnant Brothers (a northern act) do a set on my stage via my PA. There's about 8 of them - I didn't expect that! They turned up with their own PA but I recommended they use mine. They were plugged in, sound checked and up and running in no time. Their comment on the PA was "that is crystal, mate" (I think that means crystal clear). Their comment on me was basically thanks for being accomodating. Normally DJ's are ...{Deleted before you do}. I think this thread confirms that!

Coming up, I've a solo act, guitar duo, a poet and I'm hopefully in the running to support Billy Pearce at a venue locally (another northern act), so that will be the same arrangement.

As for leads, we carry adapters, guitar leads, phono / jack leads and, obviously, various XLR's.

I've never encountered any of the problems in this thread, with the exception of a CD that wouldn't play but we had established that long before it was meant to be used. I had my missus DL the key tracks from Amazon and fetch them over.

I can't help thinking that if people want to have an awkward disposition to life, then problems are inevitable.

If Mr Elvis had contacted me in advance and said "Look, I am doing a performance at one of your gigs. Would you mind me going through your system if I supply you with the backing tracks on CD?"....I wouldn't have a problem.

Even if the Elvis impersonator was charging £650 for an hour?

Silly season - you don't agree with my comments. I'm not being 'silly'.

A lot to learn - erm, yes true. But again, you're just saying that because you don't agree with me.

Being extra kind/attentive to people - Yes. Showing you care and are interested does wonders for me. I'm not a push over but I will do anything (realistically) to help others out etc.

What an earth has the mackies got to do with this?

You have missed my point Gary.

At the end of the day, if someone does presume something and I can reluctantly help them out - brilliant.

I wouldn't try and hide my CD players etc.

I would play the CD beforehand and made Mr Elvis listen to it through my headphones.

I would clarify with both parties (B&G & Elvis) that I'm not responsible for anything goes wrong...I'm merely helping him out.

And yes, I am speaking from past experience.

Like I said Darren, there would be an extra charge. If it was via the customer then it would be them paying it. If they didn't like that then the Mr Elvis could earn his fee properly and take along his own equipment.
If I was contacted by Mr Elvis himself then I would say the same to him and I know already what the answer would be so it's more than likely that he would still be taking his own equipment.

For £650.00 I would want the real bloke, complete with coffin etc!!

Paul G - In this business, it doesn't bother me what people may say (censored or not) about DJ's. I have been in bands, done P.A. work and DJ and I know that it is not a marriage made in heaven most of the time.

One of our standard questions is whether or not there is to be any other entertainment during the course of the evening, and if so, what. We ask for contact details and contact them beforehand so that we can liaise and work out what's what beforehand to give the best 'flow' to the evening and the best show for the customer.

Only once in 14 years has the 'other entertainment' contacted us beforehand!

What we do not do is carry everything including the kitchen sink that isn't required for the DJ to do his job properly, on the off-chance that someone else might need it.

I'd say we're extremely accommodating, go out of our way to make sure things run smoothly, and always put our client's interests first, but if someone just turned up expecting/assuming/presuming, it's highly possible that they would be completely out of luck.

When I was in a band many many moons ago, we used to take a DJ everywhere with us, to play a bit before we started and fill in the gaps when we were between sets. He used to bring along his big P.A and lighting set up, and we used to pay him £20.00, he loved it, and we did this for a couple of years before he realised that we be-friended him because it was cheaper than hiring the kit in!!

It's not silly at all. If I couldn't play the format then I couldn't play the format. I have quite in-depth pre-event discussions with my client so I the situation of a Bride handing me a CD unexpectably is pretty slim, but should it arise then I would politely inform her I don't have the facilities.

Plus, I refer you to my earlier post....

After reading the above do you really think I should have the means to play every type of music format even though it's not practical for me to do so?

Where do you draw the line..mini disc player, tape deck, turntable etc just incase the bride hands you one of those formats?

To be fair Shaun, most DJs have never used mini disc or tape deck etc, but most DJs have used CD at some point and I would say apart from Mp3 it is the most common type of media. That's why people turn up with CDs.

I can imagine me turning up at a wedding that's employed a band as well as myself. In walks me with my Denon, a lead to hook into their system and a pair of headphones. "Hey mate, plug that in for me good chap". I can imagine the looks I'd get.
Funnily enough I was going to post something like this just prior to reading that post.

A question to the "accommodating" DJs: Would you ever consider taking just your Laptop / HD Player / CD Player & CDs & mixer to a gig that you were doing with another form of entertainment so that you could plug into their system??? (I'll answer that myself later as I see the answer being as forthcoming as when I asked if digital DJs would plug an unknown HD/FD into their system. ie: still no response)

I consider myself responsible for the FLOW of the Entertainment in the evening(maybe my Redcoat/Compere background) and if I have to prostitute my gear and myself a bit to support another Entertainer...then so be it!!:) :) :)You might not feel that way if your gear was your sole form of income rather than having a "day job" too.

I dont allow hd's or any form of media device supplied by guest / client etc to be plugged into my system unless it has been personelly tested for virus's and other crap. I had a problem with a virus a few years ago that started to delete mp3's from a certain directory. The only times I have taken memory sticks from the guests to show on a projector, I have had a spare laptop updated with the latest definitions to check for issues before the card went into the gig machine.

Your apostrophe seems to have jumped across a word, but we'll ignore that & get to the point at hand.
Amongst all performers arnt dj's the ones who have the worst reputation for thrashing equipment and red lining mixers etc? Speak for yourself.

The only DJs I've ever seen do this were non-pros (bedroom boys out for beer money) & in one occasion a DJ who formerly worked at a well known regular London 70s night (using a system that was professionally installed & more than adequate for the venue it was in. I'd previously used it with no issues at all)

That's a fair point. The main gist of what I'm getting at still stands though. Many digital DJs don't have the facility to play CDs, simply because they're not required for the entertainment they provide. Some may wish to add a CD player for the "what if" scenarios, some may not for whatever reason, whether it be practicality reasons or something different. That doesn't make one right and the other wrong, or in Charlie's words "silly". I don't believe it's black and white. There is no right or wrong in this situation, just what's right for each individual in the provision of the service they provide.

Charlie, I didn't say YOU were silly!
Also, I'm not saying that you have a lot to learn because I don't agree with you. I said it because I think it.

This thread seems to be going off in different directions too. Now we're talking about thrashing equipment etc etc...Personally, I treat anyone elses equipment as I would my own and that's with respect, care and attention. As I said, I've been in bands and done P.A. stuff. I've also worked alongside bands and P.A. people and have also (only a couple of times mind you), let people go through my system but there have been extra payments made and I have monitored levels myself.

Also, Darren...I don't want to sound funny but I have actually used a Mini Disc to DJ with before. It was a number of years ago when I used to do a number of gigs at a particular venue where the Discos were upstairs. It was an absolute pain for access but it also had a very bouncy dancefloor too so CD's would skip allover the shop. I tried to work around it by using mini discs for the majority of the night because the anti-skip on them was a bit better. I can't remember exactly what it was but when I bought my first mini disc player (for use as backing tracks for my own music), I was sold on the idea that the player would more or less see a few seconds ahead so it was prepared for any skips. I had a Numark mixer with my mini disc player and my mates...It wasn't great to be honest. At the time I also thought of going to DAT but it was expensive so didn't bother.

...and lastly, I have also used tape decks for DJing too. I even had a double cassette as an extra option a few months back as I was doing a re-union night and someone gave me a cassette to see if I could transfer it to CD as they had a track that they wanted to be played. I couldn't transfer it at the time so took the cassette deck and played it from there. A few weeks later I was doing a night at my local and thought I would play some old demos from local bands that were around at the time. It went down well.

It's not something I'll do again really but I will try and get those demos on to CD and then ripped to the system.

So there! Ner Ner Ne Ner Ner ;)

Speaking as both an ex-comedian and also more recently as a DJ I can tell you that as a comedian I never went out without a PA system, however, on a lot of occasions the DJ would offer to let me use their system because it saved space.

As a DJ I've allowed comedians to patch into my system (OK I have a soft spot for them) for the same reason it makes sense and they get to clear out faster with less interruption to the disco.

But, and without exception it has never been where I was expected or presumed upon to provide that service, were that the case then my attitude would be different.

As a comedian you are going out to engage with and entertain the crowd, you need a mic and a PA system to do that and you cannot rely on the venue (unless they have a house system in place) or the DJ.

Well said that man. Sums it up perfectly. If someone has the gear to do the job and patching into my gear makes it easier for them and me and makes it tidier then I am all in to make life easier for us all. Because they were prepared to set up and do their job themselves.

However, I am going to defend some of the 'acts' that are being torn to shreds.

I suspect that the majority of acts who turn up with no gear don't just turn up expecting it to be laid on for them. I suspect it's because *someone* has TOLD them they can.
Whether that *someone* is the client, the venue, thier agent, the man down the pub or whoever is irellevant. We shouldn't automatically assume is the talent who is at fault. So making them out to be the idiots without gathering all the facts is stupid and unprofessional.

If an act genuinely was lead to believe that the gear would be there for them, then it's just plain 'nice' if you can see if there is any way to help them out, there may not be, but suggesting it's their fault isn't nice.

Let's just take a step back from this "It is the talent to blame for not bringing gear" - chances are it isn't, so at least have sympathy!

Sorry but I totally disagree with that

If you were booked to do an event and someone ie "the venue, their agent, the man down the pub" told you the venue had full sound and light facilities would you simply turn up on the night with your music without checking it first???

And, we are NOT talking about the venue having equipment, we are talking about other performers assuming that they can use your equipment, which is a big big difference.

I know quite a few people on the comedy circuit, most of whom do take their own equipment out with them, lets call them professionals, because they take with them what they need to do their act. I have no problem whatsoever helping these guys out, letting them patch in or lending them whatever they might need.

It actually really is the talent to blame if they turn up at a venue without their own equipment OR without having checked out in advance that what they need will be there, then I'm sorry but I'm not then going to risk my reputation by getting involved to help someone who can't be bothered to help themselves.

just to clarify......

Elvis isn't to blame he had been told he could plug into the p/a system provided, and as far as i know quoted a price accordingly.... but he had the sense to bring his tracks on cd, mini disc and a harddrive to try to cover all bases ! but the timings went out of the window once the speeches etc ran-over and niether me or the band had time to sound check as the bride wanted everyone back into the room asap and was rushing everyone, so it was no suprise that something would go wrong.... his cd wouldnt play, and it would have taken time to set up his mini disc etc...so they shoved the cd in front of me with the bride and her mother breathing down out dickie bows ! i had a choice to say no but my cd decks were in full view and im not so tuff !

I can't believe this thread has gone on for so long! It's good to hear that it wasn't the act's fault and the bride played her part (although I had thought this from the OP and, let's face it, the thread is called "stressed bride" and we all know how they can be!).

I'm with Angela on this one, though. "Other entertainment" is screen 2 of our booking system and is there to record (all) details for any other entertainment that might be happening. This means that I can contact the singer/band/comedian/magician/elvis tribute act/whoever in advance and discuss their requirements in detail and see if we can work together. I've done this numerous times in the past and, it would seem, the other entertainer appreciates this and realises the thought that I give to the event. This also gives me the chance to find out if they are bringing their own systems as space on the stage needs to be sorted in advance, too. If they're bringing loads of kit, then I'll opt for a smaller rig.

I once did a gig in Wallsend where I got there early, set up in the middle of the (somewhat huge!) stage and started to soundcheck. Then, the venue manager came up and said "What you set up there for? What about the band?". My response was "Band? No one told me about a band!". The manager said "Yes. There's a band coming.". Well, it turned out this band was a rhythm and blues review band - sort of Blues Brothers meets The Commitments - and there was about 15 band members each with their own kit! I moved the disco along to the side as it soon became clear the band was the main attraction that night. In fact, I think I only played for about an hour and a bit the whole night and was paid for a five hour show! I got to sit at the side and enjoy the band with the rest of the crowd which made it one of the best nights I've ever had. The only downside is that I hadn't been told about in advance.

Sometimes, sharing the night with other entertainers can be well worth it!!

I've had several acts ask to 'plug in' to the mixer. On each occasion they had their own equipment available and they were either just being lazy or trying to save space. I think this is the likeliest scenario rather than acts turning up without appropriate equipment, although I know it does occassionally happen.

Bit on the fence with this as I've had bad experiences and good. I helped out a couple of singers who asked politely if there was some way for us to save space in a cramped venue. By way of thanks they stayed behind after they'd finished to help with the pack away. They then passed on a considerable amount of work my way due the the good rapor.

Conversely, I helped a singer who proceeded to scream at me over the mic that the system was 'not up to the job' and I was 'playing the wrong track'!

Some you win some you lose, but as a rule I'm very wary and will say no. I think its a bit easy to say you'll always try to help if its never gone wrong for you.

Three years is a long-time for a Red.The elite were offered year-round jobs at the Hotels which were obviously open all-year round.A lot of what I do as a Personality DJ (PLEASE BE AWARE THIS IS ONLY OCCASIONALLY....WHEN IT FITS INTO THE EVENING)is nicked from my time at Butlins.

Bit off-topic....but I don't know how anyone can go to Butlins and not enjoy it....then and now!!:) :) :) :) :) :)

Sometimes the good luck this forum gives me with regards to enquiries is amazing ! :D

hi, mark i was looking to see if you were available for my wedding on 28/04/2012 and how muchyour services would be, also i am also having a singer so how would that work out, thanks

Amazing how talking about things on here tends to be reflected in life. Tonight, for the first time in ages, a magician has asked to use my mic. I told him he can, if it would reach far enough (as I don't use a wireless mic)...it does and he'll be using it. After discussion, we agreed there's no point him dragging his stuff up, when all he needs is a mic.

As you know, I'm an old bloke, and at moments of stress like that, I can very easily get confused. :o :o :o Sometimes, I can get so confused that I press the mute button on the singer's mnic channel!! Silly me. :o :o

Did you have an FOH desk with you or did you run them through a DJ Mixer. If you ran them through a DJ mixer its never going to be up to the job as it will be dry for a start unless you have outboard effects.

Singer is a :Censored: for letting you run them through a DJ mixer if you did.

Not your fault, but without a FOH desk with at least some reverb its going to sound dry (unless they are a bloody good singer).

If you run a singer through a DJ mixer its going to make you sound bad - that is a fact.

this is my longest ever post, but i needed to vent it...lol,

Bet you didn't think it would get 201 replies either:D :D :D I'm going back to number 70ish I think that's where I left it

You're quite right. I was still new to the game at that point and ran it through my normal mixer. Never again! We live and learn.

You are also right, she was a :Censored: singer!!

Freaky or what - I had a call last night from a friend of a friend who wants me to DJ at their wedding later this year and they also want a local Ska covers band to play too (they're friends of mine and very good).
One of the first things I made clear was that I knew the band and therefore I knew that they had their own P.A. so I would rather they ran through it.

I have played at their potential venue before too and I know space may be an option so we'll have to work that out beforehand.

Read every post on this and some very good comments. Im a mechanic by trade and would never expect to use another mechs tools. If i was asked if i could sort sound for anyone then i would probs say no, but only for a fee payable now or before if sorted before gig. Like whats already been said why should DJ's spend all their hard earned money for other people to get the benafit and you get the :Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored: if it goes :Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored: up.

Well, guess what happened Friday?

I turned up to do a booking at one of out regular Hotels and they had cabaret booked who were using my P.A.! To be fair, the GM did ask in an email but I thought he was talking about another booking.

What did I do? Told him I wasn't overly happy about it but on this occasion would let them use the P.A.. They had a keyboard player with his own amp and the singer had a mic, so she used that.

This is a regular Hotel who look after us. In fact they paid me for all of December's bookings half way through the month even thought they weren't all completed.

I think each case needs to be taken on individual merit.

Two hundred posts to work that out? :D :D

Flexibility, adaptability, loads of kit and pragmatism. You know it makes sense. ;) :D

I havent read all the posts but I get the drift.

Personally I work as follows---

CD player--- no problem--be like me, buy one from ASDA or Tesco for a fiver, might come in handy as in my experience the majority of the public--thats only 51 per cent--think every DJ or musical Entertainer use either CDs or a Laptop so if they roll up with a CD it can be played for them, whether you or I think the material is suitable is a different matter and I often refuse requests to play music CDs that are out of context.

CD player easily slips in the bag and runs on same batteries as the JTS Radio Mike (AA)

Use of a mike is ok for a short period---after remarks like DONT DROP IT it cost me £300--- have been made in a friendly manner as usually they are drunk, I also allow Radio Mikes to be used for speeches at Weddings as I tend to only take on such events for people I consider to be reasonably responsible.

Singing along with the music OVER MY MIKE Is definitely OUT

It reduces the event to a very unprofessional level.

I would agree with some of you including Peter ( not Shaun) that if it all goes wonky ( irrespective of whose fault it is) you might not come out of it looking too good.

Although im not DJ ing all the time I am ALWAYS happy to play CDs supplied out the blue without notice( if suitable material) and will work with singers and other entertainers as an unpaid sound engineer/ MC/link man to make the whole event run smoothly and professionally for the client.

I dont allow Bands to play through my kit ( Bass and Drums no thank you ) but have miked up a folk band with fiddles, banjo and guitar/vocals at a Wedding.

Everyone has their own rules on their own kit which we should all respect--mine may be slightly more flexible because I often ask to play through DJs /Band kit myself.

A bit of give and take really, my only regret was agreeing to allow a bloke to strum a guitar and sing free of charge through the PA at a Wedding.

I soon found out why he was free

He succeeded in ruining the whole event, a large number of people immediately cleared off home and left me with precious little in the way of people to entertain--an absolute nightmare.
