Depends on crowd - and after so long I don't think about what I say - just say it.

Same goes when I do a bit of radio stuff every now and again - just walk in and say whatever - just comes natural.

Alright? Not 'arf!

I keep my talking to a minimum, as I find it annoying when I'm out at other discos.

The music is more important, so work around it! I think if you interrupt the music at any point, you're 'butting in' on the entertainment. As you know all your songs inside-out (right??!), you will know when the music breaks down - and that's when you can take the opportunity to talk. Cutting the music in order to talk gives the dancers the chance to leave the dancefloor!
Listen to some pro radio DJs, they work around the music too. If a song has a 16 second intro for example, they sometimes talk over it right up until the main song starts, but listeners can still hear the song - and know what's coming.

A bit of experience and lots of confidence and you'll be fine.

The obvious stuff like introduce the evening, try and get people in the mood (depending on the age of the crowd etc.) Don't really announce song titles/artists etc. because thats just silly unless you're on the radio, which i'm not :D. Of course I also announce all requests,shoutouts and about the buffet and all that :p Maybe a little tiny bit of banter if the crowd are into it. I find that with the older ones they expect the banter and a bit more talking. The younger ones (late 20's - early 30s) I tend to tone it down a bit for. For 18ths and that It's about the same. But I say quite a lot at kiddies parties to get them jumping and shouting and all that stuff.

As far as nerves go, I think it's good always to have a few butterflies before you use the microphone for the first time of the night, shows you've still got it! :teeth:

When doing a biker event, and am spinning a few '70's novelty punk tunes;

"OK I got a message for Harry - Hurry up mate, we're going down the pub"

*Plays 'Hurry Up Harry - Sham 69*

"Ahh now I have a message for the bar staff from Splodge - he says 2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps please and e's got all the right money and everything thank you"

*Plays '2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps' - Splodgenessabounds

"Now I have another message here, it's for Gordon - John says you're a moron"

*Plays 'Jilted John'*

"Finally I have a message from the audience about all these messages - they say I'm a winker - err I think that's what it says...'

*Plays 'Winkers Song (Misprint)' - Ivor Biggun*

It cant be that hard, most CMS forums have designed pages to add smileys, or perhaps you don't have the permissions :S
