A bit of "Doo" or Doin' the Do

Just got back from a client meeting with a lady organising a 50th Birthday Party for her husband, very clear ideas about what she wants the party to be, and how it should run.
Asked her what had influenced her in making the decision to use me, and basically it came down to the usual things, impressed with how quickly I replied, the fact that I had gone into depth etc, and the killer, I was the only one, that chased her up!
She then went on to say she was also attracted by the statement I make about music policy:

"We guarantee that missing from the list of songs we play, will be, The Birdie Song, Jive Bunny, Agadoo (and other Black Lace abominations), or any other of those Nasties that you love to hate! To some people, it is impossible to have a party without Oops Upside your Head, The Macarena and Y.M.C.A, whilst others will cringe at their very mention. This is why we provide you with access to our on-line music library, so that you are able to tell us exactly what you want and don't want!"

She told me that she definitely didn't want an "Agadoo Disco" and when booking the caterers, had avoided the "Scooby Doo Buffet" (Sandwiches, Vol-au-vents, sausage rolls, chicken leg. Sandwiches, Vol-au-vents, sausage rolls, chicken leg, Sandwiches, Vol-au-vents, sausage rolls, chicken leg}

So perhaps the tide is beginning to turn more Doin' the Do, than Agadoo!:)

I can't honestly believe that there are DJ's out there who would still play that sort of tripe...they must cater to a market though.

I agree, that sort of stuff really is confined to the bygone days. Unless there is a compelling special reason to play those I just dont!

Cha Cha Slide and Macarena are still very popular though, get requested a lot and normally get a good reaction, as does, dare i say it, the Time Warp. But these are on the strictly request only basis, as is stuff like Amarillo and DJ Otzi. I try and avoid if I can.

But on the night I always mix the likes of ymca and I gotta feeling the the bride and groom always say they love it when in the swing.

I hate agadoo and opps ... though. But these tracks can have thier place. I Often play the macarena and it is always popular especially with school kids so expect that to be around for some time. I am by far not a cheesy DJ but some crowds demand it or it will just go down well. :)

I played oops the other day as the bride asked for it (another "i do not want a cheesy disco") and it went down well. :)
She also asked on the night for grease megamix and rocky horror :confused:

It is difficult to imagine the event for someone not used to planning them but on the night after a few they change thier tune.
the main reason people book me is they know I will play any requests and act in a non cheesy manner (ie - modern DJ).

I had a party in for a local hockey club last year with a school disco theme and if it wasn't cheesey they didn't want to dance biggest tune of the night was ymca followed by the dreaded birdy song so I think it all depends on the occasion and the kind of atmosphere you have on the night.

I would not play it as normally but it still has a place if the time is right

Flexibility is the key. I'll gladly play that sort of tripe, if that's what my client wants. I won't enjoy playing it.....but I'll play it. I had a picture I took of VDJ running on my laptop at a party in November. On one deck was "Reach" and on the other was "Agadoo". I've lost the picture...probably deleted it as the image is scarred into my mind......

If said track was on the don't play list i would explain that the party organiser had asked me not to play this particular track and if they really wanted it played go and ask them and get them to come and ask.

I can honestly say I have played the Birdie Song twice in about 4-5 years...Once was for a 90 year old lady at her own birthday party, she got on the table to dance, she managed to get up ok but then had to be helped down. The other time was at a presentation for a girl that was knicknamed Tweetie-pie, I had to play it as she was coming up for her trophy.

Last night I did a Young Farmers ball and had to play a fair bit of cheese but nothing quite so bad...But, if asked and its serious and not a wind up I'll play almost anything.

I suppose I always give a "you serious?" look when people request YMCA or similar. Mind you, I'm not sure that I actually own the Birdie Song anymore!
