Hi all,

Soon to be getting a car within the next couple of months.

Need something not too high on insurance but can fit a small rig.

I saw on here before someone fitted their rig in a little corsa, but I can't seem to find the thread/post.

I suspect I could manage to sqeeze in my rig on a 5dr Corsa or Saxo.

Any suggestions? Also if you know where that thread/post was, thanks :)

Don't be tempted to skip the business cover - because you might as well be driving without insurance at all. You also need to be truthful about what business you're actually in...

Young driver + older car + crammed full of expensive gear + middle of the night = Dibble Alert!

Last Friday night, first gig at a very nice, boutique hotel that I'm hoping to build a very strong relationship with. The hotel is less than ten miles away, and I need to be set up for 1900. Load the car (55 plate, never missed a beat Ford C-Max) in plenty of time...and the bloody thing won't start!!

I made it to the gig, in my wife's considerably smaller Alfa Romeo MiTo, carrying two sizeable Wharfedale speakers, a flightcased amp, playout flightcase, two Dynamo', two Datamoons (flightcased), two ADJ Mega Bar 50's, deckstand, speaker stands and lead box. Seeing out of the back window is a privilege, not a right......

Bought my daughter a Daewoo Matiz recently. 5 doors, 800cc engine(also comes with a 1 litre), seats fold flat, tons of room. Very cheap insurance. It may be worth a look.

Do you need cover for both jobs? If you only need it for commuting to your regular place of work, there's no need to specify business use for the first job. But if you ever go out on business travel, even if you're not carrying anything but your good self, you need business cover.

Most insurers will quote you but a lot of the online forms aren't geared up for this, so you'll probably need to hit the phones.

And the credit card :eek:

Talking about credit cards...if you were considering the pay monthly option, the APR on your credit card may be less that on the insurers pay monthly option ;)

Then the business use element is for DJ'ing.

Double-check that your basic policy includes commuting to a fixed place of work as well as social, domestic and pleasure. Then add DJing as the business use element.

Should simplify things a tad.

just get a cheap car capable of towing and low on insurance.
you can then bring what ever you want.

Diesel beetle is good on lads insurance. you will look an idiot though.
I would find a crap car with 4wd.

Honda may be a good bet but not sure if they do diesiel.
Honda civic a good idea but i think they do petrol.

Citroen AX is a good cheap workhorse too. Not sure if you can get an estate?

I had a 5dr Corsa and it was and still is a great car - I usually use large rigs, so it wasn't too good for that - but as far as a first car goes - it was great!

Now got a 3dr Ford Fiesta and a box trailer.

haha, when I say small trailer, I mean small lol. Will fit the speakers and lights (just!) so the corsa shouldn't stuggle too much. Well, at least downhill or a level road lol.

I don't know what the weight limit is but do not get a trailer with load that is over the limit that a Corsa is allowed, especially if the trailer is not braked.

i know you probably want a car that looks cool but I would opt for a safe hard core vehicle that will tow in all weather, not break down and not cost as much for running it.

I had a Subaru 4wd and it was fantastically reliable, stuck to the road and looked good. If it was diesel then it would have been perfect :(

I know what you mean. If you goal is under £3000 then you can get a saxo or something. I was thinking £1-1,500.

Im only saying it as I have made mistakes. I bought an Alfa Spider which looked great but was super unreliable.
Now the main thing is that the car is reliable and wont cost much on fuel. Go german or Japanese - you can go wrong with that.

Also have a look at quidco (https://www.quidco.com/home/)for cheap AA and get home start relay. I got mine for £50 which is really cheap.

I sold a berlingo van to someone who came from Bristol. It broke down on the test drive and he still bought it.
i ended up getting the AA to tow it from Southampton to Bristol :p That would have cost hundreds privately.

You would need commercial insurance which would be VERY expensive. :)

Nope. They track it and when its all done you get £50 or whatever back.
I have used it for all sorts of things.

Rovers are old ladies cars (they do not make them anymore so servicing and parts may be an issue) and corsas are more boy racery.

It is not based on the bucket you are driving, but what you might run it into. Slam that into my 58 plate A4 avant and you are looking at an expensive claim. Hence the premiums.

Look at things like Daewoo and other Korean random brands. They are pretty guff to drive and very plasticy, but you will build up no claims and the insurance company are bound to think you are a nerd and unlikely to slam it into anything more than a library sign. Should come out cheap and you could get a bigger unit for your kit.

I love these and might well buy one for myself at some point – Subaru Sambar (VW look alike). You pay about 3-5k for a new uk registered conversation with a new engine (so it’s pretty much brand new). They are the same insurance as a Bedford Rascal i.e. next to nothing, and they are soooo cool!
