View Full Version : Any electronics engineers in the house?

If there's anyone who's a qualified engineer, I need some help with a problem.
I would ask my own guy, but he's on holiday.
I've got a RGB laser in for repair and I've managed to pinpoint the the problem down to a 0.5ohm 5% tolerance resistor on the PSU board.
For the life of me I can't get one in the UK other than the far east and even then they are a 1% tolerance or RS, but they are charging me £15.00 postage because they are in the states :eek:
What I was wondering, is if I can get away with a 0.51ohm resistor instead?
If I did this, would it cause a problem with the PSU board, or will I be able to get away with it?

Any help would be grateful.

0.5ohm's is practically a wire link. The quicker, cheaper, and probably more available alternative is to put in 2 x 1ohm resistors in parallel.

If you think about it anyway, 0.5ohm's with a 5% tolerance means 0.5ohm +/- 0.025ohms, i.e 0.475 to 0.525ohms, 0.51ohms +/- 1% is 0.505 to 0.515 ohms, so in theory 0.51ohms with a 1% tolerance would be fine as the value will be within the tolerances of the original resistor. With resistances this small though, to be honest it doesn't make a lot of difference.

Thanks for the info Julian :D
Did think about running two 1 ohms together, but did not like the thought of the board looking messy.
I'll go down the route of a .51 ohm and see if that makes a difference, if not the I'll just have to "piggy back" the 2 ohms on top of each other to mske them look s little tidier.
