In all fairness, if I'm passing business on to someone I don't know, I usually approach the call as if I'm the customer (at first) and then say who I am and what I'm up to second.

I know it seems like a weird thing to do, but the reason...?

Simple - if it's someone I don't know, I want to know how they'll deal with my customer before I pass them on... If I called and said who I was straight off, I know I'd get a completely different banter from them.

Charles, I knew as soon as you opened your mouth that it was you and if I didn't have more important things to do I would have strung you along, offered a quote or maybe even suggested calling Charles Brown of Nottingham.

However as I was just walking in to Leicester Royal Infirmary to visit my father who is in the place for surgery today; I just didn't have the time/inclination to be bothered with you, this is also the reason the phoneline is requesting that you leave an ANSWERPHONE MESSAGE, I'm fairly sure it doesn't suggest half a dozen more calls throughout the next hour when I was in said Hospital, but hey I can't expect you to be Psycic but then again I would have thought a simple answerphone instruction was pretty easy to follow.

God loves a tryer and although your excuse is a very plausable one, it's hard to forget you have a certain reputation for phoning professional DJs under the guise of a paying customer hence the old proverb; "You can't Kid a Kidder"

Anyway this has taken up enough of my time, I'm having a quick change and shower then I'm back off to the Hospital, My office/phonelines/businesses are all closed for the rest of the day, If your collegue Hannah is a Bona Fide client please pass on my apologies but I cannot talk her call today but there are numerous ways to get accurate quotes and check availability on my website should she so desire.

Some flashy 'agency' sites do provide DJs for £200 a night. On your site there isn't any 'prices from etc' I was just making an enquiry.

I think this is all getting blown way out of proportion.

Whilst I agree with some of the comments saying that it looks like Charlie is being jumped upon, I personally think that he has yet again bought it upon himself.

Charlie, on this forum (I know it's typing words on to a screen) but you seem really confident and full of it (that's meant in a positive way).
When you are DJing you seem to come across the same way judging by reports (I've never seen you) and also recently (again, I haven't seen them), your children's parties seem to go well and it's been said you have a good rapour with them.

I take it that when you run your Disco business, you talk to customers over the phone? I also assume that you talk to people on the phone, be it customers or colleagues in your day job?

So, what was the problem in talking to someone that is on the forum? A simple voicemail or something would have done the job. That's why we have voicemail.

I'm not having a go at you and I am not jumping on the bandwagon along with a few others. The last time I made a comment that was pretty negative (and I did jump on the bandwagon), I got sin binned.....fair enough.

My two penneth- we all make mistakes.
But when we make mistakes, and then apparently make them again and again whilst saying we wont it becomes a little annoying.
Especially if we then try and keep denying it.

I dont know how true all of this is (esp the bit about the wedding/engagement which seems to have changed) but it never fails to amaze me that people go to great lengths to find out how much others charge when there is a fair bit of info available online or in forums without having to waste peoples time sending spoof enquiries.
It's almost a waste of time for those making the enquiries as you can look on websites quicker than you can call someone most of the time.

Have to agree. Bit of advice Charlie, take it or leave it it's up to you. A lot of your 'problems' can be solved by simply networking.

It is known you ring around for prices (or did ring around) - I know the prices charged by most of local my competitors and they know mine, or if they ask I will tell them. Through networking I have built up trust as they have with me and we inform each other. TBH I am not interested in the slightest what others charge anyway.

Also, if you do need to find another DJ for whatever reason, you will have a list of people to hand who you can call on - I am actually quite amazed you don't know many local DJ's whom you could have called today.

Friday (just gone)

Hannah: 'Charlie, Carl and I are making plans and need a DJ on the 17th June. Will you do me a super deal because you love me so much?'

This morning..

Charlie: 'Hannah, sorry to be a pain but I have a 40th birthday that evening. (Wish I didn't as it's my birthday weekend)

I phone a load of companies in the afternoon. I quite enjoyed it and didn't have anything better to do. The cheap ones seemed naff and the others where out of her price range.

For some weird reason, I was looking at VV's site (client login bit) and noticed for the second time this 'CW Entertainment's'

I had no idea who owned the website but it looked pretty cool. I noticed they are based a few miles away but do travel to Nottingham.

I give this '0844' number a bell. MJ is playing in the background and this voice assured me someone will pick up soon. Nobody mentioned a voicemail.

Then (I still don't know the OP's name. :o ) picked up. I mentioned it was for a wedding in June, in Nottingham. Immediately, this voice said he recognised my voice and asked who's calling. That second, somebody walked into reception and my manager was walking down the stairs.

I got flustered and it would have taken too long for me to explain...I still didn't know who it was and was a tad freaked they knew my voice.

....Then this thread appears.

Somehow, I get myself in these 'mishaps' unintentionally. I was simply enquiring on behalf of a colleague to try and find a 'sound DJ.'

I showed Hannah this thread and she was quite taken back...

A) She feels bad she has got me in this trouble.

B) She thinks it's a tad OTT for just enquiring about availability.

I post loads of videos on here and I know my voice is distinctive. If I wanted to carry on my silly games of sending out emails, I would have sent a hoax email. - Which wasn't what I was set out to do!

I panicked and hung up. I would have explained if customers weren't coming in and my manager wasn't asking about keys.

I presumed it was a wedding as that's what everyone has been talking about. Her wedding isn't till next year...she wants a bash to celebrate Carl proposing.

I also didn't realise the OP's/owner of the sites dad was in hospital.

There are a few 'flashy' agency sites in Nottingham who were charging £175 a DJ so what's stopping CW Entertainments.

I wish I could have cleared all of this up on the phone without a new negative thread about me 'time wasting' people on here.

I don't beat around the bush nor do I tell 'porkies.' A company based an hour away isn't a 'threat' to me - if that makes sense. I don't have a motive for randomly prank calling.

Just for your reference though my Wedding DJ prices start at £325 not £175 and we do not accept Agency or sub-contracted bookings as I like to keep an eye on the quality and have the freedom to manouvre, this is especially true if I do not like the Agents Methods such as your intention to take £50 off the top whilst supposedly "helping your friend" (You said her budget was £225 and assumed we could offer you a professional wedding DJ for £175, with the best respect you should know better in terms of pricing and you get what you pay for).

Final thought is to the Gentlemen who have forwarded their details; have they Spoken to Hannah or is the correspondance strictly in email form? ;)

I started this thread as a little bit of tongue in cheek humour as you had been so blatent with your enquiry but with the various remarks you have made it is making it very difficult for me to walk away from this incident and now you are calling me a liar.

Whoever / whatever / however things went down, I don't think that showing Hannah this thread on the forum and telling her that we don't believe you is really giving a professional image of DJs, Charlie.

Whatever happened / did not happen, you do need to look at how you handle situations in general when they arise (as situations always will), but that's a lot to do with your age/experience, I know, so hopefully you will improve over time. For now, just think a bit more before you act and see how things might look to others / outsiders.
