Firstly sorry for a mildy price related thread :o

I think it is a fair assumption that most of us will discount for a walk-in gig, or a gig where the kit is already in situ.

I have reasons for asking this which I will reveal at some point - but
why do we give this discount ??

1. No wear and tear on our kit
2. Our time on the job is reduced as we dont have to set-up or pack down

Erm....thats all i can think of :o

Less effort involved and less time I would have thought.

Less effort involved ...and a possible ability to save on travel too (instead of taking large vehicle, a smaller, more economical one cane be used) - but that's only really relevant if there's a distance to travel, or tolls / charges involved.

I do a few walk ins but they arent mobile discos but bar work so into that I get midweek work and the fact is a regular "secure" income.

Sorry, I meant 'mobile work' where you have the option to 'walk-in' if that makes sense :o
I have a reason for asking such a stupid question just need replies first ;)

I did a "Walk-in" before xmas and i quoted only slightly less then normal (not my London gigs btw),

Reasons:

1: Still need to pay PLI
2: Still working silly hours
3: You are still doing the music etc etc and taking the requests/stick lol

But as stated above no equipment/minimum, no loading setting up (apart from playout)

It all depends on how much you "Discount"

However..... you have to consider that your Friday and Saturday nights are at a premium, and it doesn't make too much sense to cut your fee if that is on your mind.

However..... you have to consider that your Friday and Saturday nights are at a premium, and it doesn't make too much sense to cut your fee if that is on your mind.

If your prices break down to:

1. Your time and your experience (playout)
2. Your time (loading/unloading kit)
3. Transport costs (Van for full gigs, car for walkup)
4. Equipment costs (PA, lighting, etc etc)
5. Music (CD's, MP3's, whatever)

Then for a full gig you incur all 5 of the above costs. If you do a walk up, then No's 2 and 4 on the above list are irrelevant and No.3 will be slightly reduced (depending on your method of transport), so it's not unreasonable from a customer's point of view to expect to pay less for your services

It's a difficult one, from our point of view taking a walk in gig means less money and we have kit sat in a locked room somewhere which we've paid for, but isn't making us any money. From the customer's point of view, that's not their problem, so why should they pay us the same rate if they've paid for kit which we're using :D

My usual solution is to hire out my kit when I'm doing a walkup - round here I get almost the same pay for a walkup or a dry hire as I do for a full gig, so when I get both going on, I earn almost twice as much. Which probably all means I should put my prices up for a full disco and I'm undervaluing my services... :daft:

I don't reduce my price, I offer a service, I don't offer "products".

I would have thought this questions is pretty obvious

1: less time taken (1-2 hours)
2: less responsibility as its not your kit.

All the client is relying on is your ability to DJ.

There are lots of DJ's out there who can perform a half decent job but there are less that have decent gear and know how to transport and use it.

I take walk-in work from an agent...

I text him on the Monday with my availabilty of the weekend and then I take work cheaper.

We dont.

Unless its off peak or a dead time --January to March in our business when our rates are £50 cheaper generally.

1,2,3,4 hours or without equipment its the same.

I suppose the problem is competition from people who DONT OWN PROPER EQUIPMENT--- so they take these jobs at lower rates--- then people WITH EQUIPMENT have to give a Discount to compete:confused: .

I worked in a Cambridge University Social Room with a 5kw Sound System provided last year--bit loud for Barn Dancing but what the heck--usual midweek off peak price.;)

Great answer Ian. :)

My reason for asking this question is because :

as most of you know a majority of my income comes from Race Nights. I done a race night for a birthday a few months ago where the client had recently hired me for a charity race night. Anyway, the venue where she held her birthday race night had sound, light and projector facilities built in. I literally walk in with a microphone, some tickets, dvd's and a laptop. However it never crossed my mind that I am charging full fee yet using the venues equipment.

This happens regularly for Race Nights, in fact it is very rare I need to use ALL my own equipment, yet it never crosses my mind to reduce the fee, or even think to reduce my fee, or the client mentions the fact. I have never once had a client comment about me using a venues equipment.

SO...why do we reduce our price when doing a disco ????? I felt very very awkward at first but now do not reduce my fee simply because equipment is already installed - and you know what - No-one comments on it :)

I agree 100%. Yes I can't do my job without equipment, but irrelevant of wether its there or not my fee is the same as the client is paying for me, not my S&H booth or my Martin Wizards, they just happen to be in the van with me.

Im doing fridays in a bar at the moment. £100.

Easy night IMO and better than sitting at home.

Well you see bar work is different especially if it's regular. I had a couple recently ask me to quote for a gig at a venue with their own equipment, I gave them my price, they asked me if it would be less as I am using the venues equipment, I said no...they pondered...and then booked.
