Had a phone call last night which left me a bit stunned "The Council would like you to be the Mayor of Dorchester this Year".

I did decline the offer as who the hell would book a Dj that was splashed all over the local papers wearing gold chains daft hat and ermine robes very uncool,although i would get a suit allowance so could buy a load of shiny suits at the taxpayer expense.;)

Also Dorchester has been put in to be called a City so it might have been a great title The Lord Mayor of Dorchester the mind boggles.

Hi James if i took the job i would have to take a year out kissing baby,s heads
visiting old peoples homes endless meetings and so on and i love what i do now anyway if i took the job i would not need the DSB i just ordered of you :p
also as i am now top of the list i will get offered the job next year and so on till im in my box so always a option when i feel to old to do what i do now.

I'm getting really confused with this thread Tony. AFAIK, there are 2 types of mayors in this country - directly elected, and those elected by fellow councillors.

The directly elected ones are voted in by the electorate and receive a substantial salary (but it's a full-time political position), but as I understand it, there are only about a dozen of these in the country.

The old-style mayoral positions (and by far the most common) are filled by existing councillors and voted in to office by fellow councillors. However, these are ceremonial positions and don't attract a salary... only an allowance of a couple of thousand a year.

Anyway the post was tongue in cheek just thought it was amusing that a dj could be a serving Mayor and IMHO a waste of tax payers money so not for me,hope you understand, any way lets keep politics out of the Forum as im not up to a long debate on the merits of Mayoral selection.

Can understand your reasons Tony and am sure you're probably earning more doing what you are now with less hassle and stress that the mayor position would offer - the point i was trying to make was over your comment of a hefty salary as in my opinion if it's that much of a hefty salary you'd be crazy to turn it down...

But if they are going to offer it you every year while you are at the council then to be fair i think you've made the right choice. As you say you now get the best of both worlds... Doing something you enjoy for a living until you no longer enjoy it or feel to old... Then you have a job lined up for a year with a nice salary...

And i'm sure i can come up with a number of uses for the Deckstand Booth during your term as Mayor - they are handy for meetings, press releases, coffee stations, podiums to address the masses... The list goes on :D :D :D
