I keep having a look at the things, but keep putting off buying the things for one reason or another.

However, I would like to find out more about them. So, why is there such a variance in the prices? What's the difference between those at the bottom end of the pricing scale and those at the top? After all, if they don't get you from A to B then they are not fit for the purpose and therefore breaking the Sale of Goods Act.

So, those of you who know a little about these things...... can you please explain? :teeth:

I really don't know much about the differences between lower and higher priced models. I know some come with 2d or 3d maps (or both). Some have speed camera updates, updated traffic reports and other extras. The lowest priced ones will get you from A to B but without all the bells and whistles. I have a 'navman' sat nav and I absolutely love it. If you're anything like me and get lost frequently they are a god-send.

The difference in price is normally because of the software used and also other factors like whether they are touch screen for example.

It's like anything though, you can buy cheap or expensive items, some are better quality and will last longer and not go wrong etc

Yes, I know that build quality will come into it, but it's the 'bells & whistles' part I think I am wondering more about.

I would really only want the basics - ie getting from A to B, not all the other stuff......

It's like so many things; better build quality also comes with added features, and it can be difficult to get a basic item with good quality.

I bought a tom tom as it allows the complete postcode (which is handy on my job) where as the cheaper ones only allow the first 3 digets of a postcode, saying that iam on my second tom tom as the first one froze up.

they are good but do have the odd fit, like send you right on a duel carrage way or take you off the motorway only to join it again on the net junction

I would not but one for just for the hell of it, but for using it as a tool for it its worth it, however I understand that most new mobils now have it as a option, like streetmap.co.uk

If you are looking for a cheap and reliable sat nav, the Navman ICN520 is a great unit. I use one personally, and it's been a life saver on numerous occassions where an AtoZ just wasnt practical.

I am not here to argue but all I was doing was replying to a post and in that case why was Shockwaves post not in The Traders Area??

If you remember back a bit Colin, certain people used to really annoy you when they used to keep posting items for sale in the wrong place.

So, we are trying to keep the traders section as just that and any unwanted gear etc for sale by regular forum members, can be placed in the for sale area.

If you have any specials on at the moment, then feel free to bung 'em in the traders area.

Actually that happened to me - the first time I re-set it and it was fine, and then it froze again and I had to take it back.

It's been fine since though - and this was last December.

All references to my place of work removed from original post :) Apologies for any problems it may have caused.

Back on topic though, the TomTom 300's are great little units, and if you shop around, you can get manufacturer refurbished models at a fraction of the cost. However, they're not always dependable, which is why i have my reservations.

The Navman range are good, as they have a few models that are integrated into a PDA, which makes them great travel companions. When i had a PDA version, i used to upload all my bookings on to it, and when you know half your schedule's on it, you dont leave it in the car by accident ;)

Hey mike. The tomtom you have got can you connect it up to your pc.
I purchased the 910 and for some reason the navigation file went astray.
Had the same problem as yourself. Contacted tomtom explained the problem(they were actually very helpful) they knew the problem straight away. They emailed me the file that i downloaded,guided me thru the process and voila one tomtom up and running.
