If you use a digital main playout system , and a digital back up , like the one Darren was asking about , is there any need for a CD player , at what point do you say "no" to CD`s and rely 100% on digital media and backup.

And following on from Darren's post, and my subsequent one, how about this? CD drive, and hard drive in one.

In my opinion, you do need some way of playing cd's.

ive not taken a cd to a gig for about 4 years now, i keep an ipod loaded with hours of popular tunes as a back up.

However, if i was travelling a long way from home i would take cd players and a case of discs to be on the safe side.

I finally removed my CD drawers just a few weeks ago from my flightcase, they hadn't been switched on in years, but I kept them in the case and carried a small selection of CDs in the van. My main playout is digital, as is my backup, and the iPad as a third backup source. I've also got a third HD2500 in another flightcase at home, so CD is redundant as far as the service I provide.

Backup should be digital.

im keeping certain cd's as backup and the dds cd player i can use for any cd's the client brings with them

Not for a while yet as forgot my HD last night - oops - so was back on the CD's which I still carry about.

Technically I could rip it to my laptop and play it through Traktor. Would need to be an emergency though.

Personally I will always have two flight cases of CD's in the trailer and CD backing tracks for Kev. As CD players are tough as old boots and when the technology ever plays up then its CD time and all is good.
A cd player and couple of cases of CD's take up very little room, so its a decent back up option as far as I'm concerned.

I have always been digital but I have always had the capability to play CD's DVD's or MD's. Previous experiences have taught me to be prepared for anything that could be dropped onto me on the night.

All rigs have MEP7000s,and i see more posts re computer based problems on the forum than anything else and im not that clever with computers and dont need the grief,i do have a oodj as back up which has been trouble free for 8 years,but i do understand most operators have no such issues but not for me although i do use a laptop to run lighting.

100% digital with laptop and dac2 as main playout and sd cards as backup and if clients bring their own CDs then can play through laptop DVD drive.
No more broken backs carrying cases of CDs...Yippeee!!!

I thought you had to use the software with the Pioneer? Can you just run hard drives from the unit without a PC or laptop then?

Yes no software required ,you just have usb ports to plug in two hard drive,s
faultless system when are you going to get both drives fail. You can run keyboard for search and extend the display to a monitor so you do not have to squint at a small display.
