We are hitting £1.29 a litre in some areas now and soon we will be faced with paying £1.50 per litre. So Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign' that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS - not sellers control the market place. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one) i.e. ESSO and BP.


If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If all of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)....and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on. By the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....

Again, all YOU have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP). How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

On my way to work I drive past Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Somerfield - but not Shell or BP. So I don't buy from them anyway, and haven't in 5yrs or so since the last independent BP/Shell garage on that 10 mile route closed because it couldn't compete with the supermarkets.

The whole petrol/oil marketplace is crazy. If an equivalent of OPEC existed in any other industry it'd be called anticompetitive behaviour.

Around Farnham, independant BP are 129.9 unleaded and 133.9 diesel, but Shell are 125.9 and 130.9.
I check www.whatgas.co.uk for price changes.

Buying from supermarkets isn't goint to hurt BP and ESSO, as they most likely suppy them anyway.

The only way to hurt one or two major suppliers in any way is to buy from one of the other smaller ones, e.g. Texaco or Total.

Whoever came up with this idea (and as Angela says, it's been doing the rounds for some time) obviously didn't put much thought into it!

I find cheapest in Norwich area are Asda or Tesco so when I am near one of them I top up. Asda way tomorrow but it may have gone up another 1p by then with the price of oil over $100 a barrel now.

I just cut down my driving and spend less. Bought a large diesel and get 55mpg previously I was getting 27mpg (4x4 Estima). Planning visits and journeys helps. Sharing cars, taking it in turns to drive with a friend. Easing off the gas, keeping tyres inflated correctly.
Thee measures save me more than waiting for the price of petrol to come down.

Indeed. Esso certainly have a deal with Tesco. Any pumps at smaller Tesco stores that don't have Tesco branding are badged up as Esso (we have a Tesco with Esso pumps in Barnet, I'm pretty sure the one in Oakwood is too) & I'm fairly certain that the bigger stores are also supplied by them.

2/3rds of the price of petrol is TAX. It cost me £60 to fill my Auris. £40 is tax!!
I sold my second car and now take the kids to nursery in one of these.
Feel much better. Getting fitter and spending less on fuel. They cost the same as a tank of fuel on amazon.

i drove from scotland to wales and back last week to pick up my step daughter who wanted to come up for a visit. £75 each way for petrol.

she has a 9 month old son, who needs lots of baby stuff so it wasnt viable to fly her up.

tomorow, ive got to drive her back again :(

This is just another one of those "send this to 10 friends" things. My nearest station is Esso and im certainly not going to waste fuel travelling further to get it. Vehicles are useless without the fuel so we just have to buy it no matter what it costs.

maybe its time we followed egypt's people, and have a few protests and riots.

british people generally just sit back and accept whatever the government decide. A few comments on a forum wont change anything, millions protesting and some petrol stations being burned down might make the goverment take notice.

on the other hand though, if the government didnt get so much tax from fuel, there would be even less money available for the NHS, schools, pensions Etc.

We all need our vehicles, so we're all stuck paying the price for fuel. Careful planning and sensible driving will help cut down fuel usage.

During the drive to wales i mentioned a few posts ago, i drove 470 miles each way. My car has a 2.3 petrol engine, but i still managed 40mpg by sitting at 55mph and avoiding sharp accelleration or braking. Still cost £150 for the round trip though.

Just get a diesel van, twin tank it and run it on waste vegetable oil for 15p a litre? Sorted.

Or make a small reactor and refine your own. its not very hard, load of people are doing it in their back gardens.

Or by 1000 litres of bio from a dealer and have it delivered in bulk. 80p a litre assuming you have the storage.

My lil Clio gets 27mpg at worst, which is most of the time as I only drive around 4 miles to work.....

However! I've always been something of a petrolhead and in my maturing years have been forced to go for a small car purely on fuel costs:(

I do also have a classic Rolls Royce - the most economical model they produced, the Silver Spirit (fuel injection version) which gets 18mpg at absolute best. If I use it for work I do well to just get in double figures:eek:

Like many older classic cars, the Spirit needs to be driven to keep it in good order. Leave it standing for weeks on end and its asking for trouble - and big repair bills.
Tax isn't much more than the Clio, insurance is less, but fuel bills are potentially astronomical:eek: :eek: :eek:
£120+ish will get around 200miles.... and it needs SuperPlus too...

So much for preserving and enjoying old cars:(

With the exception of my example with the Rolls Royce!
It may be pure coincidence it's fuel economy improved with Tesco, but I'll stick with it for now, and the points;)
Can't call it the cheap stuff, it is usually exactly the same price as Shell:confused:

Its becoming a pain for me here.
To make things worse, my employer is funded by Shell, and most of our customers have more money to spend when the oil price increases. This is very true for Canada.

On the ground floor... this is no good to me - if Oil prices rise, I won't be getting a pay increase to compensate for the increased fuel charges!

I'm seriously considering getting a Maxi Scooter (Carmen has a 400cc one), much cheaper to run, and less hassle in traffic.
Either that... or get another sports bike.. lol

Bringing an old thread back to life.

Well, due to the fuel costs I have been forced to increase my fee. I have decided on an additional 'blanket' fee across all prices.

So far I have had no negative feedback and have been honest with my regular clients as to why I have included this additional fee. This is affecting everyone and so far people have been very understanding.

I am also trying to reduce client meetings to just the one before booking. I used to have a meeting before booking and an additional one a few weeks before the event (weddings only). A lot of my corporate clients request a meeting so am trying to hold these meetings when in there area anyway.

Anyone else done this or considering doing so ???

I've combined meetings in the past, or tried to fit them in when we're in the area. Even before the fuel hikes, it makes sense anyway.

Charging for increased fuel prices, I guess this is coming everywhere, I've just paid £1.45/Litre for cheapo diesel, the "normal" stuff was £1.49/Litre.

Most of my gigs are fairly local, and fuel is not a major expense.
However, those that appear to be willing to travel 100's of miles surely need to consider the round-trip cost before quoting.

I have actually started to pack my setup into a corsa which does about 350 to £28 and last night I couldnt believe what I got in there, I just put some pics in the gallery, And it was all that plus a set of 4 plays and spare bits so the fuel has not really bit me yet, Its all in there locked in my garage so I will update tomorrow with a pic

Funny that this thread has been brought back to life. This morning i stuck £40 in the tank (a 1.8d Fiesta) at £1.34.9ppl. I was bang on empty and ended up with 3/4 of a tank. Im seriously considering having to pass the oncost on to the client now. :(
