Chris Evans and I both shared an agent for a while - we were both DJing whilst of school age but from different schools.

I was in the same class in junior school as Mike Ingham MBE, the BBC football commentator/ reporter. At senior school, John Flanagan TV and film actor, he's been in just about every soap ever made, usually as a policeman type.
Senior school again, Cliff Fish, band member of Paper Lace and at the same school again, murderer Colin Cheetham who shot a taxi driver at Cromford, he was a bit of a wierdo even back then.

The two fee paying schools by any chance?

Don't get me wrong I am not against it and I am trying hard to save enough to get my two through fee paying as the results speak for themselves. They are 4 and 4 months at present and I still think its an impossible dream.

In short - 'Private school' made me the guy I am today (IMO)

Quite confident, polite (although that doesn't come across on here :o ) ... a load of stereotypical things that you expect.

They helped me get 'very goodish' GCSE's. The teachers care and give you a kick up the backside if you don't do your work or hand it in. School was a place I enjoyed going too. I had a good relationship with both the lads and teachers alike. I was sad to leave.

Mum, Dad (reluctantly) and both grandparents bent over backwards to keep me in there....it was a struggle but I could never thank them enough. Best thing my Mum has done for me TBH. :o

If I ever have kids - I wouldn't even have to think about it...even if they protest and make a fuss (like I did)...I will make them try it for a year or two.

If I had gone elsewhere...I reckon I would be a different lad. I would have gone astray and done silly things and I wouldn't have a job at 17

...If you do pick a fee paying school - make sure it's decent. My school was 'down to earth' .... yes, there were rich kids there but prominently hard working kids. People where travelling two hours a day to get there and back. There wasn't any snobbery or rivalry. You had to pass an exam to get in, which was very hard. Surprisingly, I failed but the ex headmaster 'warmed to me' and 'saw something' :confused: ... (should have gone to specsavers :sj:) so he let me in.

Other schools in Nottingham are full of rich thick kids. I wouldn't like to go there...Trent for example...something like £20k+ a year for the fees and the kids struggle stringing a sentence together.

No debate my friend it is the best way forward, but with two kids and £7k a year plus six form I will need to drum up £98k at present rates to get them both through and then face 3 years of university fees, which is another £54k for two of them.

Yep that is a cool £150k to get two kids through the cheapest fee paying school and uni. Errrr - probably not going to happen.

Remember: Just because you go to public school, it doesn't mean they have to go to Uni. If they do want to go...they can get a loan and pay that themselves. Uni isn't always the answer IMO...neither is A levels. I think Year 7 - 11 or preferably Year 6 - 11, (so they can wene themself into the system) is ample.

No mate. I am the squeezed middle. I work in 'The Professions' and I am into the 40% tax rate, yet without DJ'ing at weekends we would rapidly go under. Last time I went out for a beer with my mates was October last year, because I need to work and when I am not I can't justify spending the money. Such is life - no politics and all.

Scholarships are for those who can't afford the fees. It is what is left over of the meritocracy system that went down the bog with the grammars. Scholarships are means tested.

Don't get me wrong I am not against it and I am trying hard to save enough to get my two through fee paying as the results speak for themselves. They are 4 and 4 months at present and I still think its an impossible dream.

We are really unsure about this. My son has been accepted to a private school yet he currently attends a Catholic School and the feeder school has an excellent reputation. Need to decide soon as he changes in September.



In short - 'Private school' made me the guy I am today (IMO)

I had a very privileged education, all of the local kids hated me coz I was a "Grammar Poof" and the posh kids hated me coz I was "Council House Scum" I always felt like I had the upper hand, because I got there on two separate scholarships, and my education cost my family, didley, whereas the majority of the posh kids were only there, coz Daddy paid! Still the bullying made me the man I am today! LOL

Admittedly, in my year, there where a handful of uber rich kids where the parents had money coming out of their ears but even they where nice about. There wasn't any rivalry. It's not a competition. Everyone got on fine, regardless of who you where and what you had.

Anyway... back more to the spirit of the original thread, I've just found out something.

It's not someone who went to my school who is famous, but it's a vague 'claim to fame' :D

A few friends of mine had a band in the 80s, and they didn't do too badly for a while - they were backed / produced by Vince Clarke and had a couple of singles released, etc. (It all went horribly wrong with someone shafting them financially, but that's a different story)

Anyway, the second single had the cover artwork done by another friend of mine.... and I was on the cover :D

Someone just sent me a picture of the cover, but it's dreadful quality, so I just had a little internet search to see if I could find it anywhere. I didn't find any better pictures, but I did find a completed ebay listing of the single here:-

....and a very good drummer he was too! There is actually footage on YouTube of him drumming with Druid on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Cheers for that.

Well when the group were based in Hull they lived down Grafton Street its not a posh area just your average terraced street. One of my friends lived next door to them. We used to play in the street and he was sometimes sat on his doorstep and he used to give us goodies.
