on Monday - Every single one of them have contacted me back saying the bands do a disco so you dont need to book one :(

A recent singer at our club - he plays a whole album of the same artist at high volume start, break and finish - hope this isn't a trend - it doesn't do DJ's any favours.

Ive just has a similar cancellation for one of my better paying gigs.

They were interested in uplighting the whole venue too, and were looking for a band to "compliment the disco" (Their words not mine) only to receive an email stating that they have found a band that "meets all their requirements" and my services wont be needed.

To be fair im getting pig sick of bands and singers sticking the boot in with DJs. Nearly every client meeting I have had in the last 18 months (where theres a band/singer involved) ive had the B&G saying things like "the band says the dj wont play what we want", "the band says the dj wont leave us any space", "the band says that they have a friend who can dj through their sound system", etc etc :mad:

I had TWO Weddings cancel giving the exact same reason for dates this year :confused:

Seems to be a trend, although the bands are getting worse :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

Errr leave us out of it. We provide a substantially excellent DJ service thank you which stands on its own two feet. I feel a few singers are getting a wee bit peeved with us as we do the whole job at the price of just a singer. Swings and roundabouts I guess as we also provide excellent stand alone DJ services as well as superb DJ / Singer packages. It's all about diversity!

Certainly not.

We know there are very few providers that can perform better than we do (if any). It would take far too long to knock them all :D . In all seriousness people like our laid back approach to getting bookings which is why we get the sort of clients we like to work with rather than the really intense types. Makes for a much easier life for everyone.

I was just being facetious on a Friday night as I can be. I have no idea what bands actually gain from offering the DJ service bar making them look better value. The live business has been pounded heavilly over the last couple of years so they have had to prove value for money somehow. Ipod or laptop straight into the live desk saves the punter a couple of hundred quid. Value proved. Its a nasty old world.

Why not find yourself a decent singer to pair up with to offer package deals. You might not end up doing that many, but it shows diversity and a live side to what you do. You may be appreciated as more of an artist than a DJ, just by association.

What about "I'm a DJ who happens to have great knowledge of being a sound engineer"? - As that's how I got into it :D

My new band will be pushing for the "wedding band" everyone knows and loves (or loathes!) and naturally I see it as an opportunity to offer my services as a DJ.
I won't be intentionally going out to steal work from other DJ's however, in terms of cost - All of my equipment will already be setup, so I simply charge myself out at an hourly rate for the duration that the client wishes me to carry on DJing for after our Bands' set is finished, which I assume will be more cost effective than hiring in a separate DJ.

We simply see it as an opportunity to offer a 'package deal' if you like :)

But in fairness to the bands and singers, a few recent threads have justified such a viewpoint.

In fairness I could fill clients heads with all sorts of horror stories about bands (btw, I'm a guitarist and drummer who has played in bands), but i dont because im a consumate professional ;)

Ha ha, very funny (and subtle) - consummate (complete or perfect in every respect) spelt incorrectly makes a nice contradiction!

It's really disappointing to read that conceited attitudes on both sides of the argument might be working against DJ's but there have been cringe worthy posts on the forum that have talked about not letting anyone plug in to PA / mixers or others where members have taken umbrage over space problems and playing 'second fiddle' for the night'. So, I think it is fair to say the bands and entertainers might see one or more of these as an obstacle to working together.

The bands aren't squeaky clean and we'll all have stories to tell, but personally, I've never experienced 'sticking the boot in'. I like to think I'm reputed as being very, very easy to work with and offers to support bands keep coming in.

Stick to being second fiddle and enjoy the time off while the band plays!
