Hi Chaps

My web site bounce rate is running at 41% from UK sources.

So 41% of people who hit my web site leave from the front page.

What is your bounce rate? I ask as this will give me reason to review my front page if I am particularly high or understand it is in line with the market norm and realise 41% of my traffic is dead wood.

Thanks in advance as this is serious market research.

40% isn't bad for our 'first stab'.

I try to aim to keep below 30% but having some is healthy because it shows that you are drawing in people who are not directly searching for your service - what you don't have a handle on is how many such people do actually go on to book (or bookmark for future reference) having arrived from an untargeted keyphrase.

All things considered 40% is reasonable. When we get to our first review we'll try to get this down a touch.

Honestly you ask a sensible question on a Friday night.

Peter its not the frequency that you get echo on your hearing aid - has he even got it turned up - bloody Yorkshireman saving money on batteries, its not even on - PETER ..... PETER ... PE .. for sods sake ... PETER. No chance, not even worth bothering.

Martin - I do not doubt you at all. I was just seeing what everyone else gets. The web site has paid for itself in the first quarter, so i am as happy as a Yorkshireman in a 99p shop.

80%.
I win.

Not entirely sure if mine is set up correctly on Analytics as the bulk of my visitors come from my site anyway??

Just had a look at mine and for our main website its 42.6% with 2,316 people visiting it in the last 30 days.

I'm actually really happy with that.

For the three of you and anyone else that doesn't know, a "bounce" is when someone enters your site and leaves without browsing any further pages.

Bounce rate is therefor the percentage of visitors doing this, and is sometimes summarised in any web stats (most popularly Google Analytics).

If anyone's interested the bounce rate of all the sites I have stats for (and that's a lot of sites, not all designed by me) ranges from 12.5% to 58.6%. The lower bounce rates are usually seen on more specialised sites, where there is more of a chance that the visitor will get what they are looking for.

I'd worked out what a 'bounce rate' was Marc, just don't know how to find out how to check my 'bouce rate'

Sorry, I was just generalising and thought I'd give a more complete answer :)

Your web stats might show your bounce rate. Failing that, install Google Analytics (which is free).

70% but I do alot of blog commenting and alot of my hits are from people who want to make sure they are not linking to porn. So home page then gone.. and to get better alexa rank I have used in the past an auto hitter which again has upped my bounce rate.

the local searches all hit more than 1 page so thats the quality business

It is indeed, but it also helps you tailor your front end, just as you would tailor your on site service.

I guess I raised an interesting question for some folk.
